A few rainbow boa shots from my 2018 Peruvian Amazon trip! The first shot shows the amazingly gorgeous iridescence of the rainbow boa. I have this photo available on a phone case in my shop linked in IG bio! Most animal coloration is caused by pigments absorbing/reflecting light, but iridescence is a a structural coloration caused by the interaction of light with nanometer scale variation in the tissue, whether that be interference, scattering or diffraction, resulting in a rainbow of colors being visible that change as you alter your viewpoint. In snakes the structures producing iridescence are called iridophores and are stacked reflective platelets several layers thick. The purpose of iridescence is poorly understood, but the iridophore structures are exceptionally smooth and could help snakes move through the environment easier with friction reduction and could also help in repelling water, you might notice how water drops bead and don’t spread on iridescent snakes, and how they always look so clean and dirt free even when pulled from soil. The coloration could also act to startle predators or to mimic bright warning colors. It’s a fascinating subject with many possibilities! The second shot shows how they often are in the wild, ready to bite!! You can see the 6 rows of teeth clearly! Nonvenomous, but not something you want to bite you. This was encountered during one of my past Peruvian Amazon expeditions, I’ll have another in fall 2022 if you’d like to join! If interested send me an email [email protected] Photographed with a Sony A7riii with a Metabones mark V adapter and Canon 100mm macro lens. This is my experience with maternal protection with timbers: I had seen this snake earlier in the year and its response was always to quickly retreat back into its crevice. However when I found this snake the day I took this photo it was originally in its crevice, but after I stood there for a minute or so it came out of its crevice and sat in front of the babies and rattled. Just one experience but it was certainly neat, and not a behavior I had seen prior. The first photo is about a minute before the second. New York. Timber Rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus)

A grey treefrog attempting to blend into the tree. They do actually blend in very well when you’re not looking for it, and this probably doesn’t count since I caught this frog in a pool and put it on the tree for a pic lol.

Hyla andersonii or the Pine Barrens Tree Frog is a barrens specialist frog! With a handful of very disjunct populations, this species is at risk. San José de Payamino, Ecuador
Last time I posted about my field trip (probably about a year ago now) I talked about the Bellavista Cloud forest. Our next stop was a day and a half’s coach, ranchero, and canoe ride away from Quito to Timburi Cocha research station on the Payamino river.
Tumblr media
The research station is a collaborative effort between the local Kichwa community, Universidad Estatal Amazónica and Manchester Metropolitan University. It hosts researchers, field courses, and placement students, while providing income for local communities who are actively involved in running the station and making field research possible.
Tumblr media
We spent 9 days here planning and carrying out research projects - as well as joining the Kichwa at their community centre for a friendly football match and dancing (and venti cinco...). My project was a mini version of Ferguson et al (2010); walking the trails through the surrounding rainforest and recording microclimate of herps I encountered along the way.  Detailed real world data on environment and microclimate for herptiles is pretty scarce, and I also hoped I could make a contribution to the fantastic UV Tool created by the Reptile and Amphibian Working Group of BIAZA.
Tumblr media
Only having 4 days of actual data collection available to me, I didn’t have many replicates for my project, but I did see some fantastic wildlife.
Tumblr media
Blunt-headed tree snake, Imantodes cenchoa
Tumblr media
Collared Forest Gecko, Gonatodes concinnatus
Tumblr media
Hypsiboas alfaroi
Tumblr media
Gladiator Tree Frog, Hypsiboas rosenbergi
Tumblr media
South American Common Toad, Rhinella margaritifera
Tumblr media
White Lined Leaf Frog, Phyllomedusa vaillantii
Tumblr media
Turnip Tailed Gecko, Thecadactylus rapicauda
Tumblr media
Black Ground Snake, Atractus elaps
Tumblr media
Common Root Lizard, Loxopholis parietalis
Tumblr media
False Coral Snake, Oxyrophus vandicus
Tumblr media
Tityus sp.
I still have difficulty believing I got to actually go and see all of these things for myself. Especially when it comes to the next stage of the journey: my solo trip to Isla Santa Cruz, Galapagos. But that definitely deserves its own post.
