Atlanta City Council votes to support a pause on Five Points Station construction
by Darin Givens | June 17, 2024
Thanks to Atlanta City Council for passing a resolution this evening to support the Mayor's call for a pause on the Five Points Station construction while funding issues are examined.
Though it has no legal weight, the resolution (presented by Amir Farokhi and Jason Dozier) is appreciated as a show of solidarity with the voices speaking out with concern about the construction plan, which will close the station to pedestrian traffic for about four years.
Tumblr media
Here's the text of the resolution...
------------
WHEREAS, On June 6th, the Atlanta City Council ("City Council") became aware of the provisional findings from the More MARTA Operational Audit; and
WHEREAS, these included $69.9 million in miscalculations and discrepancies in operational costs, as well as issues surrounding bus enhancement, governance, and gaps in institutional knowledge; and
WHEREAS, subsequently Mayor Andre Dickens wrote to MARTA leadership to call for a temporary halt on the construction of the Five Points MARTA Station and
WHEREAS, City Council stands united behind him in this request, and
WHEREAS, while the findings are preliminary, the figures are so substantial as to necessitate the halt until the data is made final and a public dialogue can ensue; and
WHEREAS, because we cannot, in the interest of good governance, move forward with such a major project when the very foundation of the relationship between the City of Atlanta ("City") and its transit agency is fractured.
WHEREAS, further, independent of the audit's preliminary findings, City Council has been vocal in its concerns surrounding the Five Points Station and
WHEREAS, this includes the fact that proposed improvements do not substantially improve the functionality of the station, and
WHEREAS, the planned four-year closure to pedestrian access in the center city is unacceptable; and
WHEREAS, there is a lack of confidence that this will effectively serve us during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and
WHEREAS, and while we appreciate MARTA's emphasis on tangible progress, in this instance we should take the time to get it right rather than moving too swiftly.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA, that the Atlanta City Council stands united with Mayor Dickens in his call for a temporary halt on the Five Points MARTA Station project.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that once the final audit report is received, there should be a public dialogue around the findings and their impact on public trust as well as City Council's ongoing concems around the construction of the Five Points Station
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that these requests are being made with the best interests of Atlanta residents at heart. But also in the interest of restoring trust between MARTA and the City Government. Because the strength of this partnership is vital to Atlanta's futur

Now the following is proper news reporting in sport media. I will start with my usual, no GOAT exists and if I had and have any power in any league or club I will completely delete all non singular statistical awards. Now to the fifa best 2023 The fifa best final round only allows three players, and voting is based on captains of flag teams whose vote each count for five point pg 5 to 11 of pdf linked below, very biased, you can see alot in those votes on the players location, allegiances, i argue the captains just aren't good enough to be selectors. i rather flag teams vote but we all know why that will get wild. coaches the sad thing here is most flag teams don't hire domestic coaches, so that corrupts this entire ranking system, people ask how osimhen gets so little, well :) why you don't see AFC players well… a domestic only coaching mandate for flag teams would help pg 12 to 17 media is made up of one person per country but media is so flawed. Anyone who looks at media around any sport can easily see that most of the well known people have clear negative + positive biases that they can't hide. People who want to get on sky sports and be pundits on espn and et cetera, are going to vote for non uefa? when this is all public record. pg18-23 fans which is a count from the website, this is the phoniest part. No way is haaland or mbappe ever going to have more fans than messi who is their senior by significant years. Consider this, Mbappe + Haaland had to move from their first paid contract team for larger contracts, messi didn't have to, messi was adored for that , like if he had played for el che he would had stayed at el che. Fandom sadly is too guided or manipulated to be a fair ground.
In conclusion, the scoring that was most even was from the coaches. The captains/media/fans had the largest displacements between players. for example haaland got more media points than messi + mbappe combined. Messi got more fan points than haaland + mbappe combined. Messi + haaland each received enough captains votes to double mbappes. The funny thing is mbappe has made it two the last two world cup finals:) is that envy from the other captains. In the end, Haaland drew with Messi, I argue that should had meant they share it but… the larger point is all these awards are meant to suggest a lie, and no arithmetic structure will ever validate a GOAT or Greatest. Listen folks, teams win the trophies that matter most, the players get medals for being on those teams, case closed.

Football legend Pele, has passed on at the age of 82. Pele who has been receiving chemotherapy for bowel cancer, was admitted to hospital in Sao Paulo earlier this month having contracted a respiratory infection after a bout of Covid-19. The Brazilian soccer star who rivaled Muhammad Ali as the world’s most popular and recognizable athlete, died on Thursday, December 29, at a Sao Paulo hospital. His agent Joe Fraga confirmed his death on Thursday evening. Family members had gathered at the Albert Einstein Israelita Hospital in Sao Paulo shortly before Christmas after news that his colon cancer had worsened and posted a series of pictures of their bedside vigil over recent days. Born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, Pele is the only player in football history to have won the World Cup three times - in 1958, 1962 and 1970; and a committee of experts voted him as the Fifa ‘Player of the Century’ in 2000. Pele announced himself on the world stage as a 17-year-old, playing a pivotal role as Brazil won their first World Cup in 1958 with a 5-2 victory over Sweden in the final. Pele scored twice in that game and six times overall; he remains the youngest player to score in a World Cup final and the youngest to record a hat-trick in the competition’s history. By the time the next World Cup in Chile came around in 1962, Pele was regarded as the best player in the world and although injury restricted him to just one appearance, he earned a second winners’ medal after his team-mates beat Czechoslovakia in the final. Pele completed a hat-trick of World Cup triumphs in 1970, scoring the opener in the final against Italy before providing the assist for Carlos Alberto’s memorable strike that made it 4-1. That Brazil team containing Pele, Alberto, Jairzinho and Rivelino, amongst others, is regarded as one of the greatest international teams in history. Pele scored a record 77 goals in 92 international matches for Brazil and, while there is some debate among statisticians about his official career number, the Guinness Books of Records puts his tally in a 21-year senior career at 1,279 goals in 1,363 games. #pele #brazil #football #legend #mycelebrityandi https://www.instagram.com/p/CmxIYOXrReV/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

22nd FIFA World Cup Preview
Tumblr media
22nd FIFA World Cup Preview
Starting November 20th, 32 teams from across the globe will gather in Qatar for the 22nd FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial soccer tournament that is the most popular sporting event on the planet. Here’s a preview to the four week spectacle which is going to be one of the most controversial World Cups ever held.
Why is it going to be one of the most controversial ever?
There are lots of reasons.  Let’s start with Qatar’s bribery of FIFA members to rig the vote on hosting the event.  More appalling is Qatar’s use of slave labor to build the venues for the Cup.  Oh, and more than 6,500 of those slaves died during the construction. As if that wasn’t enough, the Qataris, supported by FIFA, have put a muzzle on credentialed reporters and networks to prevent them from covering those controversies along with other aspects of their culture most people find distasteful. You can read more in this excellent commentary from Roger Bennett of “Men in Blazers” fame - Linkage.
Can we talk about the competition now?  Is anyone noteworthy missing from this event?
Two highly ranked national teams that usually appear in the World Cup -- Italy and Colombia – failed to qualify this time.  Italy’s absence is particularly shocking given they won the European Championship last year and are currently ranked #7 by FIFA.  Colombia is currently ranked #17.  Nigeria didn’t qualify either, which means someone else has to take the mantle of “best uniforms in the tournament” (more on that later).
The big MIA story, however, is the absence of emerging superstar Erling Haaland, who is currently scoring goals at will for Manchester City in the English Premier League.  Unfortunately for him – and for soccer fans everywhere – his home country of Norway didn’t qualify, denying Haaland the opportunity to shine on the big international stage.
So who are the noteworthy players to watch?
Three of the best international players ever – Cristiano Renaldo of Portugal, Lionel Messi of Argentina, and Neymar of Brazil – have said this is their last World Cup.  While maybe not quite as good as they once were (superstar performance is tough to maintain, after all), they all still are major contributors and are playing on teams that could legitimately lift the Cup on December 18th.
Here are some other players to keep an eye on:
Kylian Mbappe of France, when fully healthy, is an electric player who can single-handedly change the course of a match.
I’m hoping Son Heung-min of South Korea (and Tottenham Hotspur) will be able to play, but he just had facial surgery and may have to sit out.  He is a prolific goal scorer and South Korea will be in deep trouble if he is out.
Son’s Spurs teammate, Harry Kane, could lead England to their first World Cup since 1966.
Another (former) Spurs player, Denmark’s Christian Eriksen, is returning to the world stage after suffering a near-fatal heart attack on the pitch during the European Championships last year.
Two players for Team USA could have break-out tournaments - Brenden Aaronson and Christian Pulisic, both of whom are currently playing in the English Premier League.
What’s the format of the tournament?
The 32 teams are put into 8 groups and everyone plays everyone in their group.  The top two teams in each group advance to single-elimination matches (“knockouts”). Group standings are based on points accumulated -- 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, no points for a loss.  In case of a tie, goal differential will be the deciding factor on who advances.  Once in knockouts, matches will be played until there is a winner.
How can I watch it?
You can stream it on FOX Sports. Or you can stream it on Telemundo (and multitask by learning Spanish while you watch). Telemundo’s commentators are more emotional and do great job feeding off the excitement of the crowd during the match.  And their goal calls are much more enjoyable thanks to Andrés Cantor’s influence.
My time is limited – what matches should I watch?
For the group stages, the following matches could be very interesting:
11/20 (11 AM) - Qatar vs. Ecuador (First match of tournament - Ecuador is a sleeper)
11/21 (2 PM) - USA vs. Wales (USA needs to win this if they want to advance)
11/24 (2 PM) - Brazil vs. Serbia (Brazil's first…watch it after round 1 of your Thanksgiving feast)
11/25 (2 PM) - England vs. USA (Yanks taking on the Mother Country…Cowpens II, anyone?)
11/26 (11 AM) - France vs. Denmark (This one could be a classic)
11/27 (2 PM) - Spain vs. Germany (Two former champs slugging it out)
11/29 (2 PM) - Iran vs. USA (Does the USA advance or not?)
11/30 (2 PM) - Poland vs. Argentina (Will this be last stand for Lionel Messi?)
12/2 (10 AM) - South Korea vs. Portugal (Will this be last stand for Cristiano Renaldo?)
Once the tournament moves to knockouts (starting December 3rd), all of the matches – even the third place match on Dec. 17 – are “must see TV.”
What’s the story with Team USA?
The US Men’s National Team (“USMNT”) is getting better and is closing the gap with other countries.  There are lots of young talented players on the team in addition to Aaronson and Pulisic, most of whom have been playing in Europe to improve their performance against top international talent.
Unfortunately, the USMNT seems to be have trouble jelling and they haven’t been playing well in international friendlies leading up to the Cup.  Also, several key players are dealing with injuries that could keep them from being 100%. That’s not good because they are in the toughest group in the tournament (England, Iran and Wales are the other teams in Group B, the “Group of Death”).
Advancing to knockouts is an understandable expectation for the Red, White and Blue, but it may be tough to pull off this time.  Winning that first match against Wales is essential for advancement.
On to important matter – who has the best uniforms in the Cup this time?
Mexico, Japan and France have great looking uniforms (aka “kits”). Croatia and USMNT have nice looking “away” shirts, but their home shirts are “meh.” And, as Roger Bennett pointed out in his commentary, a special shout-out goes to Denmark for designing plain kits (including an all-black alternate) as a protest about the aforementioned Qatari controversies.
Who are the favorites?
Brazil, Argentina, France, and England are four to watch.  Some people are keen on Belgium – they do have a great defense, but I think they missed their chance to lift the Cup four years ago in Russia. France is starting to have issues with injuries, which may keep them from winning two Cups in a row.
Any dark horse contenders?
There is always one team from Africa that plays inspired soccer and threatens to advance.  I think that team will be Morocco this time.  I also think both Denmark and Ecuador could surprise and possibly advance to knockouts.
