O File System Navigator (FSN; também chamado "fusion") é um aplicativo experimental desenvolvido para visualizar um sistema de arquivos em 3D. Foi feito pela SGI (Silicon Graphics Inc. Adquirida pela hewlett Packard) para sistemas IRIX (sistema operacional descontinuado, desenvolvido pela SGI para rodar nas estações de trabalho e servidores. É uma variação de UNIX System).

Embora nunca tenha sido desenvolvido para um gerenciador de arquivos totalmente funcional, ganhou fama após aparecer no filme Jurassic Park em 1993. Em uma cena do filme, o personagem Lex Murphy, interpretado por Ariana Richards, encontra um computador exibindo a interface. Ela exclama: "É um sistema UNIX! Eu sei disso!" e acessa o sistema de controle de acesso do Park, trancando as portas da sala de controle.

O File System Visualizer (FSV) é um navegador de arquivos 3D usando o OpenGL, criado por Daniel Richard G. É um clone do gerenciador de arquivos FSN da SGI para sistemas IRIX, destinado a rodar no Linux moderno e outros sistemas operacionais semelhantes ao Unix. Ele é capaz de representar sistemas de arquivos de duas maneiras:

1- No modo MapV, arquivos e diretórios são representados como blocos de igual altura, com área proporcional ao tamanho do arquivo ou diretório correspondente; Tudo está disposto no topo do diretório pai, como um diagrama de Venn tridimensional. Na figura abaixo, os blocos amarelos são arquivos regulares e os blocos cinzas subjacentes a eles são diretórios. O diretório raiz é o bloco na parte inferior.

2- No modo TreeV, arquivos e diretórios são mostrados de uma maneira mais convencional em árvore, com links entre diretórios e subdiretórios pais e colunas de várias alturas (indicando o tamanho do arquivo) na parte superior dos diretórios para representar os arquivos de forma concentrada, com o diretório raiz mais próximo do centro e os subdiretórios mais distantes. Todos os blocos têm a mesma área de cobertura e variam em altura proporcionalmente ao tamanho do arquivo correspondente.

Nos dois modos, uma representação em árvore 2D padrão de arquivos e diretórios é exibida à esquerda da janela.

O mouse pode ser usado para girar a representação 3D do sistema de arquivos, e uma função "drone" mostra a representação de uma visão aérea.

O File System Visualizer também é capaz de manipular os arquivos e diretórios que mostra.

Os sistemas de visualização de arquivos de forma tridimensional (FSN, FSV ou similares) dão uma melhor visualização da distribuição espacial dos arquivos, aplicativos e diretórios em um dado espaço de memória , como se fossem caixas que adaptam seus tamanhos ao conteúdo que colocamos dentro (como caixas em um cômodo). 

Visualmente fica mais fácil o entendimento de gerência de dados e sua movimentação e manipulação, porém exige maior potência de processamento e energia da máquina para dar este feedback visual. 

Navegar entre essas caixas da memória como se estivesse em um drone nos dá uma visão ampla do que está instalado na máquina e mais rapidez para identificar locais, porém já nos acostumamos ao uso de árvores 2D, não dando margem para investimento neste tipo de navegação 3D para endereçamento de memórias, arquivos e pastas (file manager). Atualmente, o uso desta visão 3D seria lúdica, mas não eficaz, por conta do costume e affordances dominantes.
