Production history around: Under Ice
This article will go over the creation of my film ‘Under Ice’, which was released on the 3rd of January, 2025.
It all started when I saw a gallery open call from ADL Productions. This curator was requesting art pieces under the theme ‘Under Ice’, using Kate Bush’s song as inspiration. All selected pieces would be displayed at 54 The Gallery, Mayfair, London. W1J 7QX.
Since my academic study is in ‘chance’, I try to engage within the theme whenever possible. I would never have made a film about this topic at this time if it were not for the prompt, so I decided to throw myself into it.
I also found the deadline very appealing. I find that chance works best with a restriction, so the fact that this all needed to be done within a month was a great motivator
My initial ideas can be seen below:
While the sheet of ice idea was not used, I stuck with the idea of someone reading Bush’s lyrics over the footage I created. In terms of who read it, I decided not to ask Abi as I am keen to have her in a different piece in the future, but only time will tell if that will happen.
Also, regarding me referring to ‘Under Ice’ as a poem, I actually had no idea who Kate Bush was prior to this, thinking she was a poet. So, when I analysed the lyrics, I had thought of them as a poem instead. Though, to be honest, the distinction does feel kind of arbitrary.
When I first read the lyrics, my initial thoughts were that this was about someone suffering from addiction, who has cut themselves away from the world. That they were heavily addicted to cocaine, but wanted to kick the habit. As they snort a line, they think about how they no longer want to be this way. They have a heart attack, or stroke, and wish they could reverse time.
Since Christmas had just passed, I had recently received a ‘Walking Way 8 Points Star’ lens filter from my wife Isobel.
Isobel’s parents were down in Plymouth, staying at a BnB. During their stay they put scattered a few decorations about (we never got to putting any up this year). Since the filter works by taking a light source, and turning it into a star (size and quality dependent on intensity), I decided to test it out on the Christmas tree lights.
A photo I took on the 27th of December 2024 while testing out the filter.
I thought this looked so good and interesting that the idea of ‘Under Ice’ and the star-shaped Christmas lights merged. I also enjoyed the juxtaposition of something kind of cheery with something depressing. The phrase ‘the lights are on but no one is home’ came to mind.
Below are some of the ideas I came up with on Christmas, many of which did not make it into the final project:
On the bottom left of the page, the ‘old piece’ I am referring to is something called ‘C u r r e n t M o o d’, which I made back in 2016 as a shitpost. It is interesting though that I was creating art-like videos all the way back then.
For the coke in the film, I really wanted to have a shot of me snorting the stuff for that authenticity, even though it made some pretty incriminating footage! I did a bit of looking online, and apparently what they often use on movie sets is Vitamin B Powder.
I was a little concerned, as I found many articles during my research that mentioned Jonah Hill being hospitalized after snorting too much of it on the set of ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’.
Another worry I had was that this production would have peak ‘student film’ energy, given the subject matter. In the end, I thought, ‘fuck it’. I don’t want the worry of something I do coming across as cringe, stopping me from following my own creativity. If I am going to make 100s of films, I cannot be too worried about some of them being stinkers.
Isobel helping me set up.
After we shot the scenes of me dying in the corner, Isobel said “I wonder what this would look like with long exposure”, which caused us to play around with the lights.
This same type of scenario created the film ‘After Images’, where at the nightclub Images, Isobel played with my camera in order to make the shots long exposure.
I think it is very cool that a lot of the long exposure shots we took for this piece (of me tangled up in Christmas tree lights and dancing to the Dandadan opening song ‘Otonoke’ by Creepy Nuts) could exist as their own pieces. Maybe I will start submitting them to photography events? Not sure.
Here are some of my favourite shots:
The voice over was done by Sammy Newton-Campbell, and I think she did a wonderful job with it.
Much like Louis from my previous production diaDOGue, Sammy also appeared in my film After Images (2), but this is the first time I had asked her for help directly with a piece.
Sammy sent me her audio via Discord’s audio message feature. I had no idea how to save the file... So, I opened audacity and recorded my PC sounds in order to capture the audio. When listening back, there were these interesting sounds of the ocean which I did not understand. Then it hit me, I accidentally had the game ‘The Bazaar’ open in the background, and ambient noise from that got picked up too.
(The game has been my current addiction… December and January have been a lot less productive as a result. I’m trying to unlock the legendary Vanessa skin which is mech themed and has cute space buns… The odds are like 1/500 for a legendary, so it is unlikely, but the game is fun at least!)
On top of Sammy’s voice and the Mediterranean sounds of an ocean breeze and bird calls, I added the sound of snow being crunched as someone walks along. There were a few reasons for this: it was atmospheric, and matched the lyrics of the piece as well as my interpretation, but also the contrast of hot beach sounds with cold winter sounds I thought was interesting, and added an alien out of place quality.
For the song, I used ‘Nostalgic Winter Soundscape’ by Universfield. I think the name is very apt, as I do think it feels very nostalgic, but also melancholic. There is a nice sadness to the piece that feels detached, like the feeling of disassociation.
In terms of shots, I think it is interesting that at 0:25, during the line “leaving little line in the ice”, an interference happens with the camera that causes lines to run up the screen. This was unintentional, but looks quite cool.
I don’t like the below shot! I think I don’t look dead enough, or that I shift too much from the previous shot. I don’t know, there is something about it that feels very amateur in a way that irks me (even though I definitely am an amateur!).
I made the shot in the beginning and end of the film play forward in the first instance, and backwards in the second. That way when this film is played on repeat at a gallery, it would be more or less be seamless. The shot was made in my kitchen on the 26th of June, 2024. I noticed that the curtain on the window was casting a pretty, ethereal shadow, so I wanted to capture it. It sat on my desktop in the ‘Shots to use, but I’m not sure what for’ file for months. In the uncropped version, my dog Toffee comes to investigate.
In the end, it turned out in the end that the gallery was not able to present film works! I was not too bothered though, as I was able to make something fun as a result anyway.
The feedback I received on the work was interesting. It was great that some people embraced my interpretation and understood what I was going for.
I laughed at the mixed reaction on the Kate Bush subreddit though.
Thanks for reading! Don’t snort too much vitamin B powder!!

A video usually gets more viral than a written content. The reason being is that people choose video over content to understand things in quick and better manner. Being part of the digital world, it becomes easy to market new launched product or service of your business through video. People can reach to your video through television and internet. Experts even state that a well-assembled advertisement is the fastest communication medium between a businessman and consumers. Your message is best conveyed in the form of an advertisement. With the video advertising flooding the internet, massive airtime cost required to display an Ad is left far behind.

VIDEO STABILIZER MAKES FILMMAKING EASY

If you ever want to bring out your James Cameron hat and with to have a Pro video made, look no further than this Phone video stabilizer filmmaking case for your smartphone. Your iPhone is just like a DSLR, as well as in time that it might just overtake it, why do you not only use your iPhone like a serious videographing tool? The IOgrapher is most likely the very best bit of gear to start with. Made to act as a stability rig full of tonnes of features, the IOgrapher enables you to definitely slide your phone in and operate it as being you'd manage a gimbal, with two handles quietly. This arrangement causes considerably less trembling and you may have it installed on any tripod. In addition to this would be that the IOgrapher is made to completely raise your filming game. Besides the tripod mounting, it also enables you to definitely mount from an exterior flash, to some 37mm lens for any wide shot (or other lens for instance), to spirit levels, to some GoPro, or perhaps an exterior microphone, the choices are really unlimited. Why spend thousands on costly videography and vlogging gear when you are able just obtain the best of worlds together with your iPhone along with a $60 rig, right? At one time whenever you needed a camcorder to be able to shoot good video clip. But it is not always true any longer. While professional camcorders and stabilized OSS Lenses will invariably provide the best video stabilizer performance, the cameras in your smartphone tend to be more capable than in the past. Since almost everyone has a smartphone, while using camera in your phone is a terrific way to start filming without having to spend tons of dollars on the camera. However that doesn’t mean there aren’t issues with doing that. Maybe you have attempted to consider an adorable video together with your phone, only to get it destroyed by fuzzy or shaky footage? That could be fine if you are recording footage of the baby’s steps, but when you’re attempting to produce Youtube videos or film viral content, you would like your videos to appear their finest, even when it's really a video of the cat being silly. cheap smartphone stabilizer best phone stabilizer 2019 gimbal stabilizer best smartphone gimbal 2019 iphone stabilizer best smartphone gimbal 2018 selfie stick stabilizer best stabilizer Read the full article

I love editing. My brain just gets it. It’s one of favorite parts of the process. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Color Grading on the other hand.... 🤯😭🤔😬🍎🍊🍋🍏💎🍇🍆 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Color is part science, part math, part instinct and part magic. I learned a lot about color grading from watching our colorists when I worked in Post Production for Kodak. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s amazing how photons reflect light so differently from shot to shot based on different angles. Skin tones change ... though shot in the same environment, with the same lighting, and of the same person... light changes immensely as it bounces off surrounding objects, backgrounds and empty spaces. What reads as red in a closeup shot, can read as green in the wide shot. So each shot HAS to be graded individually, and matching them can be such a challenge! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I respect you colorists so much ❤️. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #colorgrading #postproduction #colorists #colorscientists #photons #colorcorrection #editing #womenfilmmakers #womeninfilm #femaledirector #femaleeditor #bts #scopes #color #filmmakinglife #filmmakerslife #femalefilmmakers #kodak #respect #filmmakingprocess https://www.instagram.com/p/Bxs6oDDJmaM/?igshid=1hhwxtz268lf0

Today I am going to go over my thoughts around my short ‘Doggy Style’.
Pre-Production
Early on in my investigation into chance as force for creation, I had thought about the use of animals. They are an element which are largely out of our hands. Sure, you can train them to do certain tricks, but they, like us, have minds of their own. The communication barrier in particular is what I find interesting.
Two creatures trying their best to communicate is fun. I often think that when/if our species interacts with aliens, it will be similar to talking to a pet (whether we or them are the pet, we shall see).
Skipping forward through time — my wife and I watched the Diary of Anne Frank (1959) on the 5th of May, 2024. It was an interesting film. It was odd seeing a young Richard Beymer (directly after we had watched Twin Peaks).
But what stuck with me was the acting done by Orangey the cat. Orangey was a famous cat in Hollywood at the time, also having had a major role in Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) 3 years later.
Well, in the Diary of Anne Frank (1959), there is a scene where Orangey makes some noise in the kitchen, stressing out everyone who is meant to be hiding away from the Nazis. To achieve this, they had to reverse the footage to get the shot they wanted.
I thought, in this very well-done and controlled film, that they were still unable to get a shot of this cat naturally getting them to do what they wanted, so they had to manipulate the footage for the results.
So, wanting to explore chance, and knowing how chaotic my pets are, I decided to work with them. Rather than try and eliminate the chaos created by having animals in films, I wanted to embrace it.
The idea that my dogs, which I love very much, would become part of my ‘film history’ was very exciting as well. I like that little parts of my life get woven into my work slowly over time.
Noodle is a very smart Chinese crested chihuahua mix. She is so clever, that she often ignores you to do whatever she wants. She absolutely loves new people though, always wanting to make new friends. Honestly, she loves and begs for attention from strangers more than any other dog I have met. She loves peas and cream.
Toffee is a softie, that is scared of any knock she hears, going into an absolute barking fit. Anyone at the door gets an earful. She is a Russian toy-terrier, that loves to please. She is very food motivated, and able to do lots of tricks. She always tries her best. Noodle likes to bully her.
On a side-note, I thought that this would be a great excuse to play with Sony Vegas. I had recently gotten back into using it, so I wanted to have a production where I could click on all of the effects to see what they did, and how they could be tweaked.
Production
My original vision was that Noodle would be the head of the film. In my mind, she always had more ‘star potential’. As such, you can see in my original planning notes that she was drawn in, with Toffee not even considered.
The original, basic idea was that Noodle would amble around on the blanket, with me slowly adding more Noodles. On top of this, they would shift into different elements like fire and water.
Then I went downstairs, set up a red blanket on the floor (so I had a colour to chromakey out), and started to record. I was expecting to film the dogs for 30 to 60 minutes, but they got bored after 12. Because of how the chromakey worked, if I were to move the setup at all, I would have made a lot of artefacts in the footage, so I decided that 12 minutes was all I was going to get.
Toffee taking the lead (nice pun) of this film was completely unexpected. She was so eager to please, that she would jump down in front of me (who was behind the camera) constantly. I know this is horrible for me to say as a dog dad, but before making this film I always saw Noodle as my favourite. Toffee was timid, and barked like all-hell. I loved Toffee lots sure, but Noodle always eked out ahead. From making this film onward, I have seen them as equals. Her personality has really grown over time.
Since Toffee became a major part of the piece, the jumping in and out of the frame did as well. I had not envisioned that at all when I was doing my initial planning and thinking about what would happen. This movement allowed for interesting transitions, which I feel made the film so fun and engaging. Entering and leaving the stage meant that clips could be moved around in fun ways, to make a constant feed of exciting movement to match the audio.
This film really pushed my ideas of how music can become a ‘second director’, dictating pace, energy, and forcing you to think about your footage in new ways.
Music acts like a chance prompt, with every track resulting in a completely different film with different takeaways. Also in terms of chance, I find it really fascinating that accidental matches to the music kept happening. For example, I would have a particular movement by Toffee match the music (on purpose), and then a few seconds later within the clip, it would match again (by accident). This kept happening. It makes me wonder whether there is some rhythm that dogs move in. An internal pacing. Or, it could just be coincidence.
I also want to explore more why ‘chance events’ make us (as a species) so excited. Ping-pong trick-shots, rare trading card pulls, a natural 20 in Dungeons & Dragons — there is something about these events which makes people so ecstatic that I feel is underexplored.
The song used was ‘Holiday Party’ by Infraction — it is such an earworm. My wife and I hum/belt the tune all the time. I like how all of these musicians are slowly being pulled into my body of work. It does lead to interesting thoughts about ownership, because I feel such warmth towards them. There is something there.
Post-Production
This has become one of my favourite things I have made. I can watch it all the time.
In retrospect, I wish I did not include the scene of me on the floor, the chromakey looks quite muddy in the shot, and its not the most flattering! Though, I wouldn’t re-edit it.
I find it really funny that screenings and galleries don’t accept this film. Maybe its due to the title — galleries do like to look professional at times. Maybe it comes across as low effort because of the dogs, like a Youtube meme video (there is something to be said about the arbitrariness of what is art and what is not, but another time!). We need to increase the dogs star-power so they end up in the Louvre.
