Chemicals which are used to detect fingerprints.

1.) Ninhydrin is most commonly used to detect fingerprints, as the terminal amines of lysine residues in peptides and proteins sloughed off in fingerprints react with ninhydrin. It is a white solid which is soluble in ethanol and acetone at room temperature.

2.) Zinc Chloride is also used by forensic laboratories for enhanced finger print detection.

3.) 1,8-Diazafluoren-9-one, also known as DFO, is a chemical that is used to find fingerprints on porous surfaces. It makes fingerprints glow when they are lit by blue-green light. DFO reacts with amino acids present in the fingerprint to form highly fluorescent derivatives.

4.) Nonpolar Ninhydrin is used to detect fingerprints because it reacts with amino acids from the proteins in skin cells transferred to the surface by the individual leaving the fingerprint.

5.) 1,2-Indanedione is the result of the search for a low cost substitute for DFO. Like DFO and ninhydrin, LV508 reacts to amino acid residues on porous surfaces, but it rarely produces visible prints. Developed prints do produce strong fluorescence when exposed to comparable alternate light source illumination.

6.) 5-Methylthioninhydrin (5-MTN) is a reagent for fingerprints that combines the favorable characteristics of ninhydrin (strong color) and those of DFO and 1,2-IND (strong fluorescence). 5-MTN-developed fingerprints have a stronger color than those developed with regular ninhydrin. 

7.) 2-Isononylninhydrin (INON, Thermanin) is used to detect fingerprints.

8.) Silver nitrate has been an established agent for the detection of latent fingerprints for some 120 years, and it was one of the few reagents suitable for use on porous surfaces until ninhydrin was introduced in forensics.

Formulations for Chemical Solutions

1.) Ninhydrin (Kent, 1998; Champod et al., 2004, p 239)

Stock Solution: 25 g ninhydrin dissolved in 225 mL absolute ethanol, 10 mL ethyl acetate, 25 mL glacial acetic acid.

Working Solution: 52 mL of stock solution diluted to 1000 mL with HFE 7100.

2.) Zinc Chloride Solution (Champod et al., 2004, p 240)

Stock Solution: 8 g zinc chloride dissolved in 180 mL ethanol, 20 mL glacial acetic acid.

Working Solution: 6 mL of stock solution diluted to 100 mL with carrier solvent (e.g., HFE 7100).

3.) 1,8-Diazafluoren-9-one (DFO) (Kent, 1998; Champod et al., 2004, p 230)

0.25 g of DFO dissolved in 30 mL methanol and 20 mL glacial acetic acid. Add this to 725 mL HFE 7100 and 275 mL HFE 71DE.

4.) Nonpolar Ninhydrin (Stimac, 2003a, pp 185–197)

Stock Solution: 1.5 g ninhydrin dissolved in 100 mL HFE 71IPA (may require refluxing at low temperature).

Working Solution: 15 mL of stock solution diluted with 100 mL HFE 7100.

5.) 1,2-Indanedione

0.25 g 1,2-indanedione dissolved in 90 mL ethyl acetate and 10 mL glacial acetic acid. Add this to 1 L of HFE 7100 (Merrick et al., 2002, pp 595–605). or 2 g 1,2-indanedione dissolved in 70 mL ethyl acetate. Add this to 1 L HFE 7100 (Almog et al., 1999, pp 114–118).

6.) 5-Methylthioninhydrin (5-MTN) (Wallace-Kunkel et al., 2006, pp 4–13)

1.7 g 5-MTN dissolved in 52.5 mL ethyl acetate, 50 mL methyl tert-butyl ether, 12.5 mL absolute ethanol, and 5 mL glacial acetic acid. Add this to 360 mL HFE 7100.

7.) 2-Isononylninhydrin (INON, Thermanin) (Al Mandhri and Khanmy-Vital, 2005)

4–5 g INON dissolved in 15 mL ethyl acetate, 5 mL isopropanol, and 980 mL HFE 7100.

8.) Silver Nitrate (Trozzi et al., 2000, pp 38–39)

Dissolve 30 g silver nitrate in 1 L distilled water. or Dissolve 30 g silver nitrate in 100 mL distilled water and add to 1 L ethanol.

Indian law on Medical Opinion and forensic experts: The medical opinion in death investigations has great corroborative value. The Indian courts treat medical opinion as expert opinion and with respect, as the doctor forms conclusions based on his or her medical knowledge (Modi, 2005; Parikh, 1999; Vij, 2011). According to section 161 of the CrPC, when the investigating officer asks for a statement, the medical officer has to give it unless directed otherwise by other rules prescribed by the State Government (Sarkar, 1999). Furthermore, the Indian Medical Council Act of 1956 in its section 15 (2d) states that, “no person other than a medical practitioner enrolled on a state medical register shall be entitled to give evidence at any inquest or in any court of law as an expert under section 45 of the Indian Evidence Act, 1872 on any matter relating to medicine” (Modi, 2005). The legal requirements for conduction of a postmortem examination by a qualified doctor are contained in clause (v) of sub-section (3) of section 174 of the CrPC (Sarkar, 1999). Teeth as the evidence::

One of history’s most infamous serial killers Ted Bundy's modus operandi was to violently bludgeon an innocent victim to a helpless state, and then strangle her to death. After his capture, he confessed to having killed over 30 women, although many believe that his actual body count was over 100.

Despite the blatant savagery of his crimes, Bundy was a highly intelligent man. He was able to skirt the law, and was not found guilty throughout 10 years of questioning. However, one piece of evidence proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that Bundy was indeed responsible for the heinous murders. He was found guilty based on dental matches to bite marks he left on the buttocks of one of his victims!
