here's one last snippet of the bookstore/coffee shop au before it's posted tomorrow ☕️🍁

“Guess I’m sorry I didn’t tell you I’m a dad, first of all,” Eddie finally starts, but Buck immediately shakes his head. 

“We talk for five minutes a day, man - it’s fine,” he assures him, placing the cup of coffee on the step next to him as he reaches for the muffin on the sidewalk. It’s not until he has the box in his lap and is starting to open it that he registers the silence; when he looks up, Eddie has his head turned, eyes on his. There’s a hint of… something on his face - something that looks a lot like hurt. It’s not strong, but it’s there. So Buck is quick to clarify what he meant. “I mean, it’s - we’re friends, Eddie, I didn’t mean that I don’t care, I just meant… you know,” he finds himself babbling, along with a shrug. “We haven't had a lot of time to sit down and talk. I just meant don’t worry about it.”

Buck thinks he can see Eddie’s shoulders sink - relax, and in return, he feels something inside his own chest ease - even more so when the smile returns to his face, and Buck feels his own match it. As Eddie turns his head again, another silence settles between them - although this one isn’t as tense - rather it’s calm. Comfortable. 

Buck finally gets the box open, and carefully tears the warm muffin in half, before softly knocking his knuckles against Eddie’s shoulder, catching his attention. Eddie accepts it with a nod, but then he tilts his head somewhat, looks down at it, before finally looking Buck in the eyes again. Buck pauses with his half halfway to his mouth. 

“You know - I don’t think a free muffin every few days is worth seventy four dollars worth of comic books,” he teases. Seventy four. Yikes. Buck is bad at math. Evidently, it shows on his face, because Eddie raises an eyebrow. “You haven’t counted it yet, have you?” Buck shakes his head, and Eddie huffs in amusement, doing the same. “Jesus Christ,” he says, taking a bite of his half of the muffin.
