"Hey, Kril, buddy! I finally caught up with you- remember me, it's your old pal Firth! Yeah, that boot had nothin' on me, haha"
"..."
"Boy, you were not easy to find, lemme tell ya- listen, things are bad back in New Carcinia. Ever since we dumped Trash Island all over it, crabs have been getting gunked left and right- we knew you were the one to find to do something about it, but since you wandered off, me and the others have had to pick up your slack- no need to thank me; I've turned over a new leaf!"
"..."
"Anyway, now that I finally found you, we can finally make things go back to normal! I'm sure with my brains and your brawn, this whole trash problem will be just a distant memory in no time."
"......."
"H-hey, wait, what are you doing? C'mon, Kril, it's me, Firth, your buddy! Y-you remember me, don'tcha?"

Spoilers for Another Crab's Treasure ahead.
Another Crab's Treasure isn't exactly a character-focused story. It has characters, I like several of them, but the focus is more on theme and tone.
Kril's character arc is, appropriately, simple. It fits the standard "want versus need" template cleanly. Kril wants his old peaceful life (symbolized by the beaten-up shell that's kept him safe all this time), and keeps to that want all the way down to the Unfathom. Down there, he realizes how meaningless his boring life in the tide pool is, and by the time he finally gets his old shell back, he doesn't really want it any more.
Kril realizes he needs to find purpose in life, to move forward instead of standing in place. So he gives the shell to a crab who needs it more and embraces his need. Kril goes onward and tries to make the sea a better place.
The Unfathom is a turning point for other characters, too, even ones who don't change much. Take Nemma, who (despite how much I love her) is a static character. She's the same at the start of the game as at the end, but the Unfathom is still where we see her greatest shift—deciding that she's had enough of adventure and wants to go back to Bottomfeeders and her kids.
The Unfathom is also where Chitan gets consumed by her hatred (or has her hatred hijacked by Praya Dubia—not sure which framing is better). The Unfathom's ancient trash ignites Konche's mixture of archaeological passion and nostalgia, turning him from a mostly passive exposition machine to an active agent. And the Unfathom is where Inkerton shoots Roland after one insult too many.
And then there's Firth, who arguably also has a character arc. At the start of the game, he wants to be a plutocrab like Roland. After seeing Roland's factory firsthand, Firth realizes Roland isn't as nice a businessman as he imagined; he changes how he talks about his goal, but it doesn't seem like he's changed his actual goals much. He still wants to be the trash-economy version of a billionaire philanthropist.
And then he falls into the Unfathom. We barely see Firth between when everyone falls into the Unfathom and when Firth claims the Ultimate Whorl, but something shifted. Maybe through slow contemplation, maybe through a sudden madness.
One way or another, that want fades to the background. When Firth talks about his plans for New Carcinia, he's not talking about building a business to rival Shell Corp, or even charitable works. He's talking about taking control of New Carcinia and reshaping it to fit his dream. Trash for everyone! A booming economy! Something something, advanced technology? Whatever!
Firth wanted to be Roland. But at some point, he realized that what he "needed" was power. (Not all character arcs point up.)
A lot of people seem to dislike that Firth took the final-boss mantle, but I like it. When the nicest crabitalist in the entire game comes to power, he immediately loses the nice-guy philanthropy angle in favor of a god complex. Another Crab's Treasure is saying that that's the kind of person who makes it big under capitalism, that we can't make capitalism better by paying better capitalists. The only reason Firth wasn't as bad as Roland is his lack of wealth; he dropped the pretense once he was strong enough to get away with it.

Firth Trading Card Follow-Up
Conveniently, the new Crab Souls update just dropped, and brought some Tarot-Themed Steam trading cards with them, including Firth, which has some interesting information.
His is of "The Magician".
Tumblr media
"What you can achieve is only limited by your willingness to imagine..."
The Magician has all the tools he needs to bring about his desired reality, symbolizing one completely in control of his own fate.
This is easy to tie back to Firth, with the Whorl in his possession, he had the power to do anything he wanted.
A literal meaning, The Magician holds many tools, just as Firth holds many shells.
It's important to remember that The Magician isn't inherently a "good" card. Just because someone has the ability to bring forth their ideal world doesn't mean it'll be a good one.

i'd love to see him pull himself out from under that boot and assume the MC position in a sequel or something but i think that might make me a bad person by the game's standards, haha

Destitution (1783 words) by TheDragonLich [AO3]
Chapters: 1/? Fandom: Another Crab's Treasure (Video Game) Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence Characters: Firth (Another Crab's Treasure), Kril (Another Crab's Treasure), Original Characters Additional Tags: May add more characters as I go along like when Chitan shows up, And the Firth/Kril ship tag because i am planning on putting them together down the line, I do make use of quite a few orginal characters but they're mostly set dressing, besides one that I did actaully put effort into because he's shows up to get the plot rolling, Anyways I hope y'all enjoy seeing Firth get put into the character development blender, Don't worry becoming subject to some of the worst horrors of crabitalism will totally fix him, I promise Summary:
Firth learns that sometimes the consequences of your actions is simply becoming one of the people you always thought you were so far above.
