Ah yes, a fantastic specimin indeed! I shall save this in my collection right next to my piece of Amber with a mosquito encased inside it that I TOTALLY DID NOT STEAL FROM JURASSIC PARK! :)

🐚Cabinet de Curiosités🪸 Vous le savez peut-être, je collectionne les fossiles depuis toute petite, ils me fascinent et me passionnent depuis que je suis tombée sur Le Petit Dinosaure et la Vallée des Merveilles, en 1992. Mon chouchou d’amour, c’est ce Diplomystus, un poisson de l’Éocène (35 millions d’années)(le plus gros, le petit est un poil plus ancien comme vous pouvez le voir sur sa petite fiche). C’est loin d’être mon plus vieux (mon doyen est un Trilobite de 470 millions d’années) mais je l’aime d’amour fou depuis que mon père me l’a offert dans une boutique des Eyzies, en Dordogne, pendant des vacances en 1996. Il s’appelle Claus (les créateurs d’American Dad m’ont clairement plagiée, je crie au scandale) et je l’aime d’amour. Voilà. C’est dit. Fish!

This is a specimen of Knightia eocaena, a fossil fish commonly found in the Green River formation deposited throughout Utah. The fossils in this unit are an example of exceptional preservation – with remnants of the soft tissues in their bodies preserved.

The Green River formation is a thick sequence of sedimentary rocks from the Eocene, about 55 million years ago. It was deposited in an environment that alternated between lakes and dryness as climate patterns shifted.

The saltiness in the waters helped preserve some of the organic matter that sank to the lake bottom after the organism died; there were no scavenging organisms to eat the remains.

These fish are relatives of the modern alewife and herring found in waters of North America today. Many of the fish fossils are found in layers containing multiple organisms, suggesting that the layers probably represent death assemblages: large-scale fish kills that occurred when the water chemistry became too harsh to them.
