Today In the United States, we are celebrating Flag Day It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.

🇺🇸The original 1777 flag was designed to represent the 13 original colonies with 13 white stars on a blue field and 13 alternating red and white stripes. 

🇺🇸One of the first flag designs had the stars arranged in a circle, based on the idea that all colonies were equal.

🇺🇸In 1818, after a few design changes, the United States Congress decided to retain the flag’s original 13 stripes and add new stars to reflect each new state that entered the union.

🇺🇸Each time a state was added to the union, a star was added. Today, there are 50 stars, one for each state in the union, but the 13 stripes remain.

I think Flag Day is one of most important patriotic celebrations in the United States.

Reposted from @the9stripes In the early days of the American Revolution, before the formation of the Continental Army, several colonial regiments and local militias were engaged against the British. Each local group flew their own colors in battle. On June 14 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution stating that “the flag of the United States be 13 stripes alternating red & white” and that “the union be 13 stars of white in a blue field representing a new constellation”. This was the original ‘Betsy Ross’ design. Two generations later President Woodrow Wilson declared June 14 a national holiday to commemorate the birth of Old Glory, the American Flag.
