Years ago I read an article in Bicycling magazine called Invisible Riders. Of the thousands of magazine articles I've read, this one has always stuck in my mind.
It's about the bicyclists, often poor, who pedal cheap bikes to work. They aren't doing it for fitness. There's no racing or sightseeing. Saving the environment isn't a consideration. The title is explained in these two sentences:
You and I have seen the bikes everywhere—cheap, department-store rigs chained to fences and signposts outside car washes, lumberyards, budget chain restaurants. But we’ve never seen the riders, not really.
I thought of that article again this morning as I entered a grocery store. Outside It's -5°F (-20°C). Here rests this clunky Schwinn, locked to a bike rack with a cheap cable.
The seat is adjusted oddly. There's a water bottle holder, but it's placement renders it useless. The sagging chain sits on the smallest gear in back. It's likely the other gears never feel that chain. This Schwinn has as much carbon fiber and titanium as the Mayflower did.
The lack of snow and frost on the seat and handlebars indicates this was pedaled to the store this morning. It is not abandoned.
The little Schwinn could belong to someone going shopping. Inside I didn't see anyone wearing a backpack. So it probably belongs to one of the employees.
When I worked downtown I used to do some bike commuting. I loved every minute of it, even when I got caught in the rain or had a flat. I could afford nice gear. My waterproof panniers had room for spare tubes and tools in addition to my laptop and work pants. I even did a bunch of winter rides, wearing Gore-tex and fleece, but never when the temperature was sub-zero. I still use those nice panniers to go grocery shopping these days -- in the spring and summer.
The ratio of miles pedaled to money spent on the Invisible Riders' bikes must be astronomically greater than that of most carbon fiber racing bikes I've seen around town.
These Invisible Riders bikes always catch my eye, when they are parked. And I guess I don't notice as often when they're being ridden.

My new forks arrived in this ludicrously enormous box. Even knowing what was inside, I lifted it like there had to be some weight there and thus almost hoisted it over my shoulder.
Tumblr media
Alongside my arrived-as-standard set of Sektor Silvers. I've gone for a mild increase in travel, from 140mm to 150mm, and you can sort of see it in the stanchions.
The Revelations weigh under 2kg, which is absurd to me as someone more used to motorbike parts. Even the outgoing Sektors are noticeably heavier.
I was far too excited to photograph the fitting process extensively (even though I probably could have sold the photos to work 🥲👌) but:
I had not bought any replacement anythings, so I used my old bearings and had to prise the crown race (that circular washer-type piece that interfaces with the bottom bearing) from my old forks.
This was fiddly but not too hard — just make sure you spiral around lifting it by a few millimetres at a time so it doesn't distort or get lodged on the tube at an angle.
Fitting it on the new forks was more interesting. Jim has this cool old tool that slips over the steerer tube and applies pressure uniformly.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately it's fucking old and doesn't fit modern bicycles. Everything's so much broader now.
So I went through our garage rubbish and found this piece of rubber lagging, god knows what from, and used that + mallet + patience to tap the race into place. Deployed the mallet to undo my brake caliper bolts, too.
Tumblr media
Slotted everything roughly into place, marked the desired height on the steerer tube, took it all apart again and hacksawed the crap out of it. Filed it smooth and reinstalled with grease this time, then found a nice flat-headed bolt to use to help whack the star nut into place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then put it all back together. I thought I might need a custom bracket for my caliper, but once I ditched the old Shimano one, everything bolted on no problem. O to have such standard sizes in motorbiking.
Woeful pictures, but bike on arrival vs bike now:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's a Diamondback Corax 1.0 with the Bosch CX Motor. Mods include Revelation RC Forks, Magura MT5 on the front and MT4 on the rear. Mavic Crossmax Elite 27.5 wheelset (running SUPER TACKY tyres, ofc). New stem/bars/grips/pedals.
Still has the old rear shock (Monarch R) derailleur, seat and dropper post system — which is stuck unlocked at the moment, so I need to fix that. The mechanism is fine; just gotta grease or replace the cable and perhaps the dinky stock lever I've struggled with forever. The derailleur is meh, but on an emtb, who gives a fuck.
I doubt I need to replace anything else, really.
But let's see if I can stick to that.

I bought some new guitar patch cables: Hosa CFP-606 6" LL Flat Patch Cable. They're to be used between guitar effects pedals. It was a good price for a set of six. In my opinion, their quality is nearly as good as EBS patch cables. I bought them on Amazon Japan: https://amzn.asia/d/1MeGouO #guitar #electricguitar #hosa #patchcables #amazonjapan (at Naha, Okinawa) https://www.instagram.com/p/CkkRS-xrahf/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

DIY Bike Maintenance: Essential Tips for Keeping Your Ride in Top Shape
DIY Bike Maintenance: Essential Tips for Keeping Your Ride in Top Shape https://ift.tt/R6aJoci Cruising on your bike is not just about the thrill of the ride; it’s also about ensuring your two-wheeled companion is in prime condition. Regular DIY bike maintenance not only enhances your cycling experience but also extends the lifespan of your bike. Here are some essential tips to keep your ride in top shape without breaking a sweat. Cleanliness is Key A clean bike not only looks good but performs better. Regularly wash your bike with a gentle detergent. Pay attention to the chain, gears, and brakes. A clean bike is less prone to wear and tear. Check Your Tire Pressure Maintaining the correct tire pressure is crucial for a smooth and efficient ride. Use a pressure gauge to ensure your tires are inflated to the recommended levels. Proper tire pressure prevents flats and provides better traction on the road. Lubricate Moving Parts Keeping your bike’s moving parts well-lubricated is essential for smooth operation. Apply a bike-specific lubricant to the chain, derailleur, and other moving components. This reduces friction, prevents rust, and extends the life of your bike’s drivetrain. Inspect and Adjust Brakes Brakes are your bike’s most critical safety feature. Regularly inspect brake pads. Adjust the brake cables to ensure they are neither loose nor tight. Properly functioning brakes are vital for a safe ride. Tighten Loose Bolts Before hitting the road, check for any loose bolts on your bike. Pay attention to the handlebars, saddle, and pedals. Tightening loose bolts prevents unnecessary rattling and ensures a stable and safe ride. Check and Adjust Gears Smooth gear shifting is essential for an enjoyable ride. Regularly check your bike’s gears for any issues. If you experience difficulty shifting, it may be time for an adjustment. Keep your gears in top-notch condition for optimal performance. Examine the Chain A well-maintained chain is crucial for a smooth and efficient ride. Check for any signs of rust, wear, or stretching. Clean the chain regularly, and if needed, use a chain checker tool to measure wear. Replace the chain if it’s extended beyond the recommended limit. Inspect the Frame Give your bike’s frame a visual inspection. Look for any cracks, dents, or unusual bends. A structurally sound frame is vital for your safety. Consult a professional bike mechanic for further assessment if you spot any issues. Keep Your Bike Indoors Storing your bike indoors, away from the elements, contributes significantly to its longevity. Exposure to rain and harsh sunlight can accelerate wear and corrosion.  Know When to Seek Professional Help While DIY maintenance is excellent, some tasks require the expertise of a professional bike mechanic. If you encounter complex issues or are unsure about a repair, take your bike to a local shop for a thorough inspection and service. Incorporating these simple DIY maintenance tips into your routine will ensure your bike remains a reliable companion for countless rides. Happy cycling! via Ellis Sullivan | Lifestyle https://ift.tt/OnzwQM1 August 16, 2024 at 02:50AM

Understanding the Most Common Car Issues and How to Fix Them
Tumblr media
Owning a car can be both a convenience and a headache. While it provides freedom and mobility, dealing with car issues can quickly become frustrating. From strange noises to unexpected breakdowns, there are several common car problems that many drivers encounter. However, understanding these issues and knowing how to fix them can save you time, money, and stress in the long run.
1. Engine Overheating
Tumblr media
One of the most common car problems is engine overheating. This issue can be caused by various factors, including a lack of coolant, a malfunctioning thermostat, or a faulty radiator fan. If your car's temperature gauge starts to climb into the red zone, it's essential to address the issue immediately to prevent serious damage to the engine.
How to Fix It: Pull over to a safe location and turn off the engine. Allow the car to cool down before checking the coolant levels. If the coolant is low, refill it with the appropriate type recommended by your vehicle's manufacturer. You should also inspect the radiator hoses for any leaks or damage.
2. Flat Tires
Tumblr media
Flat tires are a common occurrence for drivers, especially if you frequently drive on rough roads or encounter debris on the highway. While a flat tire can be inconvenient, knowing how to change it yourself can save you time and money on roadside assistance.
How to Fix It: Start by locating the spare tire, jack, and lug wrench in your vehicle. Loosen the lug nuts, raise the car with the jack, remove the flat tire, and replace it with the spare. Tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to ensure even distribution of pressure.
3. Dead Battery
Tumblr media
Few things are more frustrating than getting into your car, turning the key, and hearing nothing but a faint clicking sound. Dead batteries are a common issue, especially in older vehicles or extreme weather conditions.
How to Fix It: If you have jumper cables and access to another vehicle, you can jump-start your car by connecting the cables to the positive and negative terminals of both batteries. Once the dead battery has enough charge, attempt to start your car. Consider replacing the battery if it continues to lose charge frequently.
4. Check Engine Light
Tumblr media
The dreaded check engine light can indicate a wide range of issues, from minor malfunctions to serious engine problems. Ignoring this warning light can lead to further damage and costly repairs down the line.
How to Fix It: Visit a mechanic or use an OBD-II scanner to diagnose the specific issue triggering the check engine light. Common causes include a loose gas cap, faulty oxygen sensor, or catalytic converter failure. Addressing the underlying problem promptly can prevent further damage to your vehicle.
5. Brake Problems
Tumblr media
Brake issues can compromise your safety on the road and should be addressed immediately. Common signs of brake problems include squealing noises, spongy brake pedals, or a vibrating steering wheel when braking.
How to Fix It: Inspect the brake pads and rotors for wear and tear. If the pads are worn down or the rotors are warped, they will need to be replaced. Brake fluid levels should also be checked regularly, and any leaks should be repaired promptly.
6. Transmission Issues
Tumblr media
Transmission problems can manifest in various ways, including difficulty shifting gears, strange noises, or leaking fluid. Ignoring transmission issues can result in complete transmission failure, which is both expensive and time-consuming to repair.
How to Fix It: Have your transmission inspected by a qualified mechanic if you notice any signs of trouble. Regular maintenance, such as fluid flushes and filter replacements, can help prolong the life of your transmission and prevent costly repairs.
7. Faulty Alternator
Tumblr media
The alternator is responsible for charging the battery and powering the electrical systems in your car. A faulty alternator can lead to a dead battery, dimming headlights, or electrical malfunctions.
How to Fix It: If you suspect a faulty alternator, have it tested by a professional mechanic. Depending on the extent of the damage, you may need to replace the alternator to restore proper function to your vehicle's electrical system.
8. Air Conditioning Problems
Tumblr media
A malfunctioning air conditioning system can make driving uncomfortable, especially during hot summer months. Common issues include blowing warm air, strange odors, or unusual noises coming from the vents.
How to Fix It: Check the refrigerant levels and inspect the A/C compressor for any signs of damage. Recharging the system with refrigerant or replacing faulty components can help restore proper cooling function to your car's A/C system.
9. Electrical Problems
Tumblr media
Electrical problems can manifest in various ways, from a malfunctioning power window to a faulty stereo system. These issues can be frustrating to diagnose and repair but are often caused by loose connections, blown fuses, or faulty wiring.
How to Fix It: Start by checking the vehicle's fuses and relays for any signs of damage or corrosion. Inspect the wiring harnesses for loose connections or exposed wires. If you're unable to identify the problem, consult a professional auto electrician for assistance.
10. Exhaust System Leaks
Tumblr media
Exhaust leaks can pose serious health risks due to the release of toxic gases such as carbon monoxide. Common signs of an exhaust leak include loud noises, foul odors, or reduced fuel efficiency.
How to Fix It: Inspect the exhaust system for any signs of damage or corrosion, paying close attention to the exhaust manifold, catalytic converter, and muffler. Replace any damaged components and ensure that all connections are tight and secure.

My Tech Setup
I’ll make separate posts for my software and bass guitar setups, but here’s my current tech hardware setup.
Tumblr media
The overview. Details incoming!
MacBook Pro
My Mac is the center of it all — and I’m living the laptop-desktop lyfe.
Now, there are many things I like about living in Norway. And one of them, is that we’ve mandated by law that things like computers needs to have a 5-year warranty(ish). And this also applies to second-hand owners! So buying used Apple gear, is great here — and that’s how I bought my MacBook Pro when it was 10 months old.
It’s a 14-inch M1 Pro base model, with 512 GB of storage and 16 GB of RAM.
I do have to be mindful of the storage, and occasionally, I push the RAM. But it still works tremendously. I’ve never been this happy with a computer before.

Did you notice the Macbook in the previous image?
Apple Studio Display
Yes, it’s too expensive — but no, it’s not the same as just having a 4k screen. **And look at everything that happens when I connect one Thunderbolt cable to my Mac! **👇🏻

I just love that I can unplug one cable, and just take my laptop home with me.

When I had this at my home office, I also connected ethernet to the spare port, a mouse in the USB-A hub, and some more stuff.
Tumblr media
I've tilted the trackpad (and its wrist rest), to improve the ergonomics. I should probably get a split keyboard as well...
Tumblr media
Makes it easier to connect both my headphones and speakers to the Mac, and I also use it for bass rehearsel and recording, and for testing pedal boards. Fastened with Dual Lock.

The mic and monitors are fine - nothing more, nothing less. But very practical!
Tumblr media
These sound great! Especially with Crinacle's EQ preset set through . Tons of leakage, though.
Desk accessories
The wool desk mat was custom ordered (to me previous, tiny, desk) from this Etsy store. The, equally custom, wrist rests are from this Etsy store.

I almost never need a wallet - so Apple's MagSafe wallet is perfect. The Moleskin notebook is just as under used.
The iPad and headphones stand is IKEA’s (very cheap) Havrehoj. I like it a lot!

iPad
I have the iPad Pro 11-inch from 2018 (the first with the flat sides), with LTE and 256 GB of storage. I also bought this used — in 2019, and it still works well (even though I’m starting to notice that it’s 5.5 years old, with the occasional slowdown). I’m one of those who loves having LTE — as it’s so nice to never having to worry about internet connection. I also used it as my «whiteboard» when I was a teacher — and could just switch to LTE if the school’s network was struggling. 1
I also have the Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard, which I like.
iPhone
Tumblr media
Not in the first image, as it took it.
I’m a noted Mini iPhone enjoyer, and my iPhone 13 Mini (in Midnight) has worked perfectly since the day I got it. It fixed all the issues of the 12 Mini, and is a top-tier iPhone IMO.
Here are some things I’ll say ’til the day I die (and will fight everyone who disagrees with 💪🏻):
The ordinary (potential) Mini buyer is on a long update cycle, and has also bought SE phones. So when the SE got updated half a year before the 12 Mini’s release, many of those had recently bought a phone — and this hurt the sales.
The 15 Plus phone also «flopped», but doesn’t get nearly the same amount of flak!
The lineup with the 13 Mini, 13, 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max was the perfect lineup. Apple should be able to include a mini phone in their trillion dollar pipeline anyway. I don’t have particularly small hands (I just like to be able to use my phone one-handed), but many people do and should be well-served as well.
Here’s to hoping the next SE is a Mini. 🤞🏻 (But I doubt it. And, my next phone is probably a Pro for the cameras anyway…)
I also have the first gen AirPods Pro. I really like them, but I’ve had some troubles with them, and had to return them a couple of times. Luckily, there’s the whole government mandated warranty — so even though I bought them in 2019, I got brand-new ones (for free) as late as the fall of 2023. 🙌🏻
No, it’s far from as nice to just share from your phone. ↩︎

Navigating Jaguar Car Clutch Services for Smooth and Precise Driving Experience
Tumblr media
In the intricate mechanics of a Jaguar car, the engine and transmission harmoniously collaborate to power the vehicle. However, a crucial element often overlooked in this performance equation is the clutch. Responsible for transferring power from the engine to the transmission, the clutch plays a pivotal role, and understanding its maintenance and service is paramount for Jaguar owners seeking optimal performance.
The Unseen Hero: Clutch in Jaguar Cars
Amidst Jaguar's array of remarkable features, performance stands tall. Maintaining this performance longevity entails regular service of critical systems like the engine, transmission, and equally important, the clutch. Unfortunately, the clutch often remains neglected until users encounter operational irregularities, leading to exacerbated conditions and costly repairs.
Recognizing Clutch Failure Symptoms
With prolonged use, clutch components gradually deteriorate. Recognizing early warning signs can prevent major malfunctions. Key symptoms of clutch failure include:
Juddering Clutch Pedal: Vibrations or juddering felt when releasing the clutch pedal.
Difficulty in Gear Shifting: Changing gears becomes challenging, often resulting in stalling.
Unexplained Engine Revving: An increase in engine revs while maintaining constant speeds on flat roads.
Importance of Timely Clutch Service
Addressing clutch issues promptly is essential. Delayed service exacerbates problems and leads to more extensive repairs. Neglected clutch components wear out faster, resulting in performance disruptions and potential safety hazards.
Comprehensive Clutch Repairs
Clutch service can be carried out by skilled professionals at service centers or by individuals with mechanical expertise. However, technicians at service centers equipped with specialized training and tools can efficiently address clutch problems in 2-7 hours, depending on the extent of repairs needed.
Understanding Clutch Components
Critical components of the clutch system include the clutch plate, pressure plate, flywheel, release bearing, clutch cable, and clutch oil. Faulty components, like a worn clutch plate causing slippage or a deteriorating flywheel affecting transmission function, necessitate timely replacement after thorough system checks.
Cost of Clutch Repairs
Typically, clutch repairs in Jaguar cars expense depends on the extent of wear and damage to clutch components. Early intervention and routine maintenance can help mitigate hefty repair costs.
Preventive Measures for Clutch Longevity
To extend the life of the clutch system, adopt these prudent practices:
Gentle Clutch Operation: Avoid applying excessive force or riding the clutch pedal unnecessarily.
Brake Usage Over Clutch: Utilize brakes instead of the clutch when stopping the car.
Careful Clutch Handling: Minimize pressing the clutch pedal excessively or when not in use.
Benefits of Regular Clutch Maintenance
Routine service and careful usage ensure proper gear shifting and overall efficiency. A well-maintained clutch system contributes significantly to a smoother driving experience and optimal vehicle performance.
Conclusion: Prioritizing Clutch Care for Jaguar Excellence
The performance prowess of Jaguar cars relies not just on their powerful engines but also on the efficient collaboration between the transmission and the clutch. Prioritizing regular clutch service at authorized Jaguar service centers ensures precision repairs with genuine parts and skilled technicians.
By recognizing clutch failure symptoms early, adopting careful usage practices, and prioritizing routine maintenance, Jaguar owners can ensure their vehicles perform at their best for longer durations. Trusting professional service centers for clutch repairs guarantees a seamless and reliable driving experience in these high-performance vehicles.

Back to a larger pedalboard.
Carrying the weight forced me to reduce my pedalboard to a minimum size. Only to realize it was not that lighter after all…
So, what is the point if you have to use fewer effects and limit your sound? In my case I also had to use cheaper cables because they were the ones I could afford with flat heads in order to save space.
I learned Harley Benton makes very light and inexpensive pedalboards so I bought the 40 cm wide model of their Spaceship series, just 1.26 kg.
The signal from my Strat is now:
Wah > Masotti White Box > TS808 > OCD > Masotti OD Box > MXR/CAE Mc402 > Zoom Multistomp.
The idea behind this setup is:
I was missing a good buffer so I reintroduced the Made in Italy White Box, which is also a very good booster, to be used as a clean gain boost before the overdrives.
It can boost the following Ibanez TS808 Mini which I will keep probably at almost zero gain. This setting can replicate some John Mayer Trio sounds when I need them: he used a Keeley Katana clean booster into a TS808.
The Fulltone OCD is the transparent overdrive here, my all time favorite. OCD boosted by a Tubescreamer is a renown great sound! I can still boost it with the White Box if needed…
The other Masotti here is the exceptional and versatile OD Box. One of its setting is also TS-like so I can use it at lighter gain and occasionally boost it with the OCD or any of the pedals preceding it. Here also this is similar to the Trio setting: a Boss Blues Driver (the transparent overdrive) boosted a Tubescreamer or was boosted by a clean booster.
The MC402 here is the underrated one here. The boost section is very famous, the MXR Line Booster know for its clarity and its ability to add consistency to your sound. The overdrive section is actually a replica of the Freddie Fuzz (aka Black Cat Fuzz). The boost in that position is just a clean volume boost and the fuzz comes handy every now and then (again Trio’s Hendrix interpretations, Gilmour’s use of the Big Muff, etc)
The Zoom Multistomp will handle all other possible effects, even amp simulation if needed. All modulation can be carried out from there, also equalization, compression, the works!
So I should be set when I’m playing either JM3 or generic blues-rock covers!
