To have as many negatives scanned at this resolution as I have done so far would have easily paid off this machine. It's slow going but hopefully I will get to some new stuff soon! Enjoy

Update on technical aspects.

So far, I have been using Ilford FP4, and I see no reason to change that stock – it has worked really well for the project so far. It is the right ISO (125) and the latitude of the emulsion and grain structure is such that it lends itself very well to this. FP4 is a multipurpose film, quite forgiving. Ilford describes FP4 as an ‘all-purpose black & white film with fine grain, medium contrast and outstanding sharpness. Ideal for most shooting scenarios in good light conditions’. So far, I have had little success with the exoskeleton frame I had envisaged for the project – with metal fabricators that I have approached not interested in making that. I suspect that, and according to one of them, they are behind in their production in the aftermath of COVID. You’ll see the ‘roughs’ that I mocked up and sent over, but I guess also, it’s a little bit of a mad thing to request a fabricator to do!

I have contemplated buying an actual greenhouse (too expensive and large) a cold frame (not quite right) and a second-hand wooden frame on eBay (these are usually quite rotten and need repair). This element of the project is proving to be the trickiest. I have a carpenter that I am in discussion with over a potential frame, so this may be the route.

In some respects, a metal frame is less useful as it would need a way to mount the plates to the frame. That might mean that the glass would need to be drilled – this would cause far more problems with the liquid light emulsion.

All the film has been developed in Rodinal developer for a 10 min development time. Two tanks, developing 6 negatives at a time. I use a stop bath (although not strictly necessary) and fix for 6 minutes. Wash for 15 minutes and use a wetting agent to stop smears and runs, hang in the drying cabinet on low heat.

Negs are scanned on a Hasselblad Flextight X5 drum scanner at 1500 dpi. Saved as TIFFS.

Stockholm Tree by Philip Dygeus Via Flickr: Taking a break from my project The Tribunal (at philipus.com) with this – a lone tree in the centre of Stockholm. I've passed this spot so many times over the years and always wanted to photograph it at night. The location is literally a stone's throw from a central square, the Sergels Torg (which can be reached through the passage behind the tree). During one of my trips back home to Sweden during the pandemic I finally had occasion to go there at night and photograph it with my Hasselblad. I like the contrast between the brutalist surroundings and the organic form of the tree. It's a living–dead contrast in some way. I'm also happy that several windows were lit. It's as if the city itself is peering cautiously at this peculiar being that's sprung up from its concrete floor. PS. WEEK 6

The course is realy stepping up now, lot to learn, lot to remember. This week we have covered induction and tuition on the Flextight scanner, scanner software and print calculations. After the break we began a series of exercises using studio lighting, reflectors, polyboards, snoot, soft box and colour gels.
