A treasure trove of new species have been discovered in Fiji’s highlands after several New Colombo Plan student study tours.

Three successive years of federal New Colombo Plan funding has enabled Flinders University, in collaboration with University of South Australia, the South Australian Museum, and the University of the South Pacific, to explore terrestrial biodiversity in Fiji – and led to the unexpected discovery of many new species.

For example, before the project began in 2016, there were only three known species of Fijian native bees. The most recent research excursion, completed in April 2018, indicates there are more than 20 species.

Surprisingly, most of these new species are limited to specific mountain regions, sometimes only a few kilometres away from each other.

This all supports an intriguing evolutionary biology puzzle that researchers are now keen to explore further, says Flinders University Associate Professor Michael Schwarz.

“Our research findings are adding to the scientific understanding of the country’s rich biodiversity,” he says.

The most recent field trip in April included research into butterflies and pollination networks, to gain a deeper understanding of how Fiji has evolved into a tropical biodiversity hotspot.

They found the native Fijian bees’ love for pollen from introduced species could be a major threat to the Pacific island’s ecosystems.

Associate Professor Schwarz says the effectiveness of Fijian bees in pollinating introduced weeds is allowing the plants to spread at an alarming rate, making Fiji especially vulnerable to exotic plant species.

“These findings shed light on areas like kin recognition, and food sharing that dates back to the Eocene, at least 45 million years ago,” says Associate Professor Schwarz.

Nature photographer and Flinders PhD student James Dorey has begun documenting Fijian butterflies to produce the first authoritative field guide to this stunning group of insects, along with genetic analyses to study their evolutionary origins.

The Flinders group’s intensive mini-research projects are identifying threats and challenges to the Pacific island’s fragile ecosystem, with achievements from the past two years’ work including the identification of a new species of wasp, Gasteruption tomanivi.

The find occurred during last year’s New Colombo Plan research trip to Fiji, when Flinders students Ben Parslow, James Dorey, Olivia Davies and Cale Matthews travelled with 18 students to the island of Viti Levu to collect bees and wasps in the mountains.

Cale Matthews, who studied bee diversity at Fiji’s highest mountain Mount Tomanivi in 2017 and 2018, says Fiji holds a trove of biodiversity secrets that are yet to be discovered.

“Every time we go back, we uncover more species and we are continually surprised by the extent of Fiji’s bee diversity,” he says.

“Field work in these remote highland regions is very physically demanding, so recognising a very small but unique species after all the climbing requires some special skills,” says PhD candidate Ben Parslow.

“I knew as soon as I saw the specimen that it was a species of Gasteruption. I was extremely excited as I am currently researching the genus in Australia and the Fiji specimen was very different to the Australian fauna,” he says.

“This wasp is the first representative of the genus Gasteruption to be discovered in Fiji and a distinctive new species.”

Studies in Fiji funded by the New Colombo Plan have also provided tantalising evidence of how natural landscapes and their modification by humans have influenced biodiversity in the tropics.

“When we look at species today, we need to be mindful that what we see is not only the product of ancient evolution, but also human influences that have changed ecosystems over the past few thousand years,” says Associate Professor Michael Schwarz.

New genetic analyses show that at least one native bee has benefitted enormously since the mysterious Lapita people first colonized Fiji about 3000 years ago.

Their use of fire and agriculture increased open clearings in Fijian lowlands and this would have increased the habitat that native bees need for nesting.

“Recent research suggests that biodiversity patterns can’t be understood just in terms of ecology, but also how speciation is shaped by interactions with parasitic micro-organisms,” says Flinders University’s Olivia Davies, who works on the genetics of Australian native bees and helped lead two of the latest research field trips to Fiji.

Associate Professor Mark Stevens, senior invertebrate researcher at the South Australian Museum, says the recent discoveries have identified the importance of continuing and expanding the scope of biodiversity research being conducted in Fiji.

“I have worked extensively in the Antarctic, but was amazed to see how much greater the biodiversity was in the Fijian highlands and the potential effect of glacial cycles in promoting this diversity,” says Associate Professor Stevens.

“We are still trying to understand why species numbers are so high in tropical latitudes and a new model of island biogeography is clearly needed,” he says.

The three-year Australian Government New Colombo Mobility Plan project is investigating a range biodiversity issues in lowland rainforest and highland dry forest areas.

By enabling undergraduate and Honours students to undertake such research, this funding meshes with the Flinders University Study Without Borders mobility program, which facilitates study and work in different cultures to develop stronger regional understandings and collaborations.

The third year of research under the New Colombo Plan Mobility Program funding aims to further improve biodiversity and environmental risk assessment, and provide training for jobs to safeguard fragile ecosystems – in addition to providing students with long-lasting contacts in the region.

Is not for nothing that every year Margaret River presents the Margaret River Pro, part of the World Surf League and World Championship Tour, a surf competition between the best female and male surfers of the world. Usually, this competition is around twelve days during the first semester of each year. If you come to visit this region at this time be aware that the city of Margaret River become busier than usual, and it is suitable to rent homes or places to stay weeks previously.

One of the first things I did in Australia was to take a tour to Kangaroo Island. The island is situated about 45 minutes off the south coast of Australia. It was absolutely amazing and a great way to start my time in this beautiful country!

If you’re planning on visiting, it’s worth bearing in mind there’s no public transport on the island. You’ll either have to bring your own car or book a guided tour, otherwise you won’t get very far! I didn’t have a car, so I opted for a guided tour starting in Adelaide. After a 1.5-hour bus ride, we took the only ferry from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw, a town on Kangaroo Island.

Kangaroo Island – two days on the beautiful island

I spent two full days on the island and this was plenty to see most of what the island has to offer. However, there’s plenty more to do if you’re planning to stay a little longer! Being an island, it’s naturally home to many amazing beaches, but there’s much more than just sandy stretches. Keep reading to discover my top 5 recommendations for things to do on Kangaroo Island!

1. Little Sahara

One of the first attractions we visited was the Little Sahara, a small dune system on the south coast of the island, stretching over two square kilometers. The dunes were formed by coastal blowouts over the past 7,000 years. The sand is very soft and an off-white color, so the sun’s reflection makes it look like snow.

Although the property is privately owned, you can visit the dunes for free, but will need to pay to rent a board or toboggan, which is great fun! Unlike in most ski resorts, there is no lift that pulls you up the hill, so you’ll have to carry the board to the top (or as far as you can). As mentioned before, the sand is very soft, so be prepared to sink as deep as your knees, or slip back a little while walking!

I like to consider myself a good skier, but I’ve only been on a snowboard once or twice in my life. This maybe explains why I face-planted into the sand so often! One thing I learned pretty quickly was that you really shouldn’t scream while falling, unless you want to end up with a mouth full of sand! I tried to master the art a few more times, before deciding it was best for me to admire the experts from the sidelines. The tobogganing, however, was much easier and more enjoyable!

2. Flinders Chase National Park

Flinders Chase National Park is an area of rugged wilderness in the West of Kangaroo Island. The park is home to many of the island’s main attractions, including the Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch, as well as lots of wildlife and plenty of walking routes. You can still see the remnants of the 2007 bush fire, which tragically burned down 60 percent of the park, but it doesn’t take away from its beauty!

Unfortunately, we didn’t have too much time to explore the park. But from the bit I did see, it’s a stunning destination, and I’d highly recommend spending more time there if you can.

Just be careful of the snakes! While wandering around, I saw a pretty big black snake a couple of meters away from me. I’m not a big fan of these reptiles, so I kept my distance, but was still brave enough to also take a photo. I later found out it was a Black Tiger Snake, which is highly venomous!

3. Remarkable Rocks

One of the main Flinders Chase National Park’s highlights are the Remarkable Rocks. This cliff-top collection of granite boulders has been formed into unique shapes by water and wind over the last 500 million years.

You can walk across and climb over the rocks, while enjoying the amazing view! Apparently, it’s best to come here in the early morning or later in the evening in order to beat the crowds and see the sunrise or sunset over the stones. They’re covered with orange lichen, which appears golden in the sun.

When walking around the boulders, don’t go too close to the edge of the cliffs. They can get slippery and it’s easy to fall. Despite many warning signs, our tour guide told us that tourists still fall into the water from time to time. With some of the strongest waves I’ve ever seen, and the rugged cliffs, it’s very unlikely that you’d make it out alive.

4. Admirals Arch

Admirals Arch is also part of Flinders Chase National Park, located just a couple of minutes from the Remarkable Rocks. To get to the arch, you’ll have to follow a wooden boardwalk that’ll lead you over the cliffs and to the coast. While the views from the boardwalk were amazing, the arch itself was a little underwhelming. Similarly to the Remarkable Rocks, it has been shaped by erosion over thousands of years, and now features some impressive stalactites hanging from the cave ceiling.

If you get here later in the afternoon, you’ll have it mostly to yourself, as most tourist buses will have already departed. However, the afternoon sun will also shine through the gap in the arch, making it hard to see anything.

The main reason why Admirals Arch still makes it onto my top 5 list is that you can see a New Zealand fur seal colony from the boardwalk! These friendly, playful creatures are pretty small and like to live on rocky shorelines, which is exactly what Admirals Arch offers.

While we were there, the seals were very active and it was really entertaining to watch them playing with each other! If you’re lucky, you’ll also be able to spot some dolphins or — if you visit between May and October — some impressive whales (May to October only)!

5. Watch Wildlife

My two days on Kangaroo Island were full of encounters with all types of wildlife. According to the Kangaroo island official website, there are more than 1,500 different animals living on the island, some of which cannot be found anywhere else in Australia!

Let’s start with some of the most obvious (the island has its name for a reason): kangaroos and wallabies! You won’t have to try very hard to spot them, as they appear nearly everywhere you look and come very close, too.

While having a barbeque, we were surrounded by kangaroos and wallabies trying to sneak a cheeky bite! We saw more unique wildlife on our second day, when we spotted pelicans and dolphins in the distance from our lunch break spot in the small village of American River.

More than a third of Kangaroo Island is dedicated to national parks and wildlife conservation areas, such as the Seal Bay Conservation Park. The entrance fee is worth it to see gorgeous Australian sea lions, and to contribute to the maintenance of the conservation area and research about this endangered species. You’ll be able to get up close to the seals, ranging from small pups to big bulls.

While we were there, a tiny pup was crawling through the sand crying for its mom, who was sadly nowhere to be seen. It was heartbreaking and I really hope it found her!

We also stopped at the Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, which is home to countless animals, including many nocturnal species. We mainly visited for the koalas, which were easy to spot while taking a walk through the vast park.

We learned that, on average, koalas spend about 20 hours a day sleeping, two hours eating, and a maximum of 30 minutes moving around — what a life, right?! In addition to koalas and kangaroos, I also spotted an echidna — a close relative of the American anteater — which I’d never seen before!

A highlight of any Australia vacation is meeting the unique Australian animals! Whether you’re visiting a wildlife sanctuary, watching kangaroos hop freely in the wild, cuddling a koala, or swimming with whale sharks, there are so many opportunities to experience Australia’s unique wildlife.

Here are some of the most iconic animals you’ll see in Australia:

Kangaroos & Wallabies

These iconic Australian animals are of course at the top of the list! Australia has 55 native species of kangaroos and wallabies. They look very similar, but have a wide range of sizes; wallabies usually look like a kangaroo, but smaller.

There’s no shortage of places to see wild kangaroos in Australia, but our favorite is Kangaroo Island. Over a third of the land on this southern island is protected in nature reserves. At Southern Ocean Lodge, one of the complimentary signature experiences is “Kangas and Kanapes,” where you can enjoy 5-star cuisine and bubbles while watching the roos hop around at dusk.

Koalas

Who doesn’t love cute koalas?! You can find these adorable animals all over eastern Australia—yet their population is in steep decline and they are actually listed as vulnerable (one step below endangered).

You can get your picture taken with a koala at Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas. This is a great activity for families visiting the Great Barrier Reef! If you want to get more adventurous and see them in the wild, take a tour with our mates at Echidna Walkabout Nature Tours. Quokkas

These little guys’ happy smiles make them some of the cutest Australian animals! Quokkas are some of the smallest members of the macropod family (aka “big foot”), which includes kangaroos and wallabies. You can get an Instagram-worthy quokka selfie on Rottnest Island off the coast of Perth. But remember: while quokkas look cute and cuddly, they are still wild animals, and it’s illegal to actually touch them.

Wombats

Wombats are some of the lesser known Australian animals, but once you get to know these waddling marsupials, they just might be your new favorite! Wombats are very short and sturdy, and they’re some of the world’s best diggers. Fun fact: their poo is square thanks to their extremely long digestive system.

Wombats can live up to 30 years, but in the wild, most of them survive only 3-5 years. There are some great sanctuaries you can visit that rehabilitate injured and orphaned wombats and release them into the wild. One of our favorites is Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary in Tasmania. Here, you can even take a private after-hours tour and hand-feed the wombies!

Quolls

There are 4 species of quoll in Australia, and while they all look a bit different, each species has distinctive white spots. You might mistake these Aussie critters for some type of rodent, but they’re actually carnivorous marsupials that eat birds, reptiles, and sometimes other furry creatures.

Quolls like to come out at night and can be shy around humans. One of our favorite wildlife experiences is a campfire dinner with our mates at Pepper Bush Adventures in Tasmania. While enjoying a delicious meal in the remote wilderness, you’ll see the nocturnal creatures (including quolls) come to life and start wandering around your camp!

Tasmanian Devils

You may know the Tasmanian Devil as a Looney Toons character, but it’s a real live Aussie critter, too! Tassie devils are the size of a small dog, but they have a nasty reputation. When they’re threatened, they’ll make frightening growls and screams. Imagine early settlers hearing those devilish sounds out in the bush at night and it’s easy to see where the name comes from!

Tasmania is the only place in the world where you’ll find these rare creatures in the wild. But don’t be too scared about meeting them—they’re quite shy and only scream and growl when they feel threatened.

At the after-hours Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary tour, you can actually feed the Tasmanian devils and play a little game of tug of war over their food!

Platypuses & Echidnas

Platypuses and echidnas are the world’s only 2 species of monotremes, or mammals that lay eggs. You’ve probably seen a platypus before, with its duck bill, otter body, and beaver tail. They’re difficult to see in the wild, but your best bet is in a quiet riverbank in the eastern coastal areas.

Echidnas are also strange-looking creatures. They have spines like a porcupine, a beak like a bird, a pouch like a kangaroo, and they lay eggs like a reptile. Fun fact: Baby echidnas are called puggles, and they’re very cute!

You can see both of these unique Australian animals (and many more) at Healesville Sanctuary outside of Melbourne.

Sea Turtles

There’s nothing like swimming alongside a turtle in the Great Barrier Reef! Sea turtles can be found in many Australian waters, but the Great Barrier Reef is one of the best places to see them year-round.

If you time your trip right, you might be treated to an even more amazing experience: watching turtle hatchlings make their way out to sea! A great place to see them is Heron Island, a fabulous resort located on the Great Barrier Reef. From September to March, hundreds of sea turtles come to nest on the beach, and you may even be able to see a mother digging a hole for her egg. The little hatchlings usually begin to break out of their shells in December.

Large Marine Animals

Australia has thousands of miles of coastline, so it’s easy to see large marine animals like sharks, whales, dugongs (relatives of the manatee), and seals. Ningaloo Reef on the western coast is one of the best places in the world to swim with enormous whale sharks! Unlike whale shark tours in Mexico, these tours don’t require you to wear a life vest, so you can get right up close to the animals (just don’t touch!).

You can swim with sea lions in Port Lincoln, a town on the southern coast. Meanwhile, various whales—including humpback and southern right whales—can be seen along the eastern and western coasts from May to November. And if you want to swim with dolphins, you can do so as an excursion from many major cities, including Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth.

Emus

These large, flightless birds are so common in Australia that they appear alongside the kangaroo on the Australian coat of arms. There was even an Emu War in the 1930s when struggling farmers in Western Australia were suddenly swarmed with emus that destroyed their crops.

Emus can grow over 6 feet tall and run more than 30 mph! You’ll find these strange Aussie creatures roaming freely in the scrubby bushlands of the outback. The Flinders Ranges in South Australia is a great place to see them in the wild against a beautiful backdrop.

Crocodiles

Crocodiles might be some of the most famous Australian animals, thanks to the Crocodile Hunter and the beloved film Crocodile Dundee. You might think there are dangerous saltwater crocs roaming all over Australia, but actually they’re mostly found in the northern outback.

This is one Aussie animal you probably don’t want to interact with! However, its natural habitat is absolutely gorgeous and certainly worth exploring. Kakadu National Park in particular features a lot of the rugged red escarpments, rushing waterfalls, and secluded swimming holes you’ve seen in the movies.
