Theory I have if you don't mind hearing it, since you like the 2003 peter pan movie too. I always thought another reason why Peter doesn't grow up because eventually neverland became attached to his soul. He is neverland, neverland is him. His emotions and feelings effect the island, and when he leaves it becomes dead frozen winter. So if Peter Pan ever chose to grow up, neverland would die. Including all the faires, the mermaids, the natives. Sobmaybe thats another reason why he chooses not to grow up. Neverland is his responsibility but also his burden. It's pretty silly theory, but I love it.

There is some merit to this. In the book, every child has their playtime and fantasies expressed in their own private Neverland. When flying the Darling Children recognize it instantly. He recognizes the pink flomingos there. Peter, is a human child like everyone else, except he lives on his neverland.
