On Stage 1 at the old Samuel Goldwyn studio on a hot day in the middle of last month, Lucille Ball came back. Barking the familiar laugh that blends a strangling Airedale with a porpoise, mugging for assistant directors and stagehands who weren't even born when ''I Love Lucy'' went on the air in 1951, Lucille Ball came back to weekly television - 12 years after she left it.

Whether she was named Lucy Ricardo or Lucy Carmichael or Lucy Carter, whether she was the daffy housewife pinned to her kitchen wall by a loaf of homemade bread or the wacky widow wheedling a different sort of dough from a sour-faced banker, Lucille Ball was the queen of slapstick television comedy from 1951 to 1974. Now, a few weeks away from her 75th birthday, she is waiting to slide across a hardware store on a wheeled ladder in the first episode of a new series, ''Life With Lucy.'' It will be shown Saturday nights at 8 on ABC, starting in late September.

This time, she is Lucy Barker, a widow and a grandmother. In the initial episode, she moves into the Pasadena home of her daughter and son-in-law and her two grandchildren and takes over half-ownership of a hardware store run by the fuddy-duddy father of her son-in-law. He is, of course, played by Gale Gordon, her employer and comedic nemesis on ''The Lucy Show'' and ''Here's Lucy.'' When ''Life With Lucy'' was being planned this past spring, Miss Davis did offer one concession to Miss Ball's age. ''I said, 'We won't fly you,' '' says Miss Davis, referring to putting a wire on an actor so he can do stunts. Miss Ball's answer: ''Oh, I can fly!''

At first glance, at least, Miss Ball seems to be remarkably agile and limber. ''I'm not dropping out of an airplane or jumping up and down on a trampoline this first show,'' she says. ''But the Lucy character is the same as ever. To her, nothing is impossible. She's going for it. This show is Lucy at another time in her life.'' And, indeed, as in all her earlier series, Miss Ball will be the centerpiece of every episode.

Wearing an over-sized yellow shirt over white slacks, with a gold print scarf tied loosely at her throat, Miss Ball is eating lunch in a huge dressing-room suite that her husband, Gary Morton, has already spent a week making homey. Although, to television audiences, she is indelibly married to Desi Arnaz - it was a national event when their son, Ricky Ricardo, was born on ''I Love Lucy'' in 1953 - she was divorced from Mr. Arnaz some 28 years ago and has been married to Mr. Morton, a comedian and producer, for nearly 25 years.

The walls are full of pictures Mr. Morton has hung, including a poster for Miss Ball's 1974 movie - her last movie - ''Mame.'' Oddly, it was at this studio that her film career began in 1933. She was a ''Goldwyn Girl,'' a long-legged showgirl, in ''Roman Scandals,'' starring Eddie Cantor.

There is no single reason why she has returned to the grind of weekly television. ''We went to Florida last year and did seminars, and people kept saying, 'Please come back, please come back,' and we started thinking about it,'' says Mr. Morton. ''She was bored,'' says Madelyn Davis. ''Lucy doesn't want to sit at home in a rocking chair, going through her scrapbooks.''

Certainly, money was not the lure. Miss Ball and Mr. Arnaz were the first television stars to put their series on enduring film instead of impermanent kinescope, and some old ''Lucy'' show is being run on some television channel somewhere on any given day. ''I didn't realize it until two or three years ago, after I had paid back all the guest appearances to Carol Burnett and Bob Hope and the others, all the promises I had made, all the charity I had to catch up on.''

But there was a psychological barrier to overcome. ''I missed Viv so much. And I couldn't bear the thought of going on without her,'' Miss Ball says. Vivian Vance, who died in 1979, had been Miss Ball's friend and partner-in-mischief on all the ''Lucy'' series. On ''Life With Lucy,'' Lucy Barker will be provided with no woman friend or confidante. Miss Ball pushes the idea away with her hands. ''No way, no way,'' she says. ''That's one thing I draw the line on.'' She says she decided to go for a new series because, with ''The Bill Cosby Show,'' ''the cycle for this sort of thing, family  shows, came around again. I wouldn't have to do a pilot. And Gale was available and so were my writers. Gale is the strength, the one I upset so he can hardly stand it and he recoils comedically. Hopefully, we'll find plenty for him to bluster about.'' (1)

As always, Lucille Ball has creative control. ''Young network executives are not going to walk in and tell Lucy what's funny,'' says Mr. Morton. The series is a co-venture of Lucille Ball Productions and Aaron Spelling Productions. It was Mr. Spelling who got Miss Ball excited -''like a war horse,'' he says - about doing another series. And it was Mr. Spelling who made ABC commit to a firm order for 22 episodes, an unusually high number nowadays (2). ''I'm sick of this prejudgment by age,'' he says. ''Does Bob Hope work? Across the television dial from ''Life With Lucy,'' at 9 P.M., on NBC's ''Golden Girls,'' the dialogue is crammed with sexual jokes and middle-aged widows bring men home to bed. Although Miss Davis speaks of ''Life With Lucy'' as ''vintage Lucy turned into a today's woman,'' the show will have no sexual humor. ''She's never cared for that,'' says Miss Davis. Instead, according to Miss Ball, ''one premise will be my first date since my husband died, with a mother-daughter switch, the daughter worrying when her mother doesn't get home on time.''

By ''bringing the Lucy character up to date,'' Miss Ball and Miss Davis mean that ''Life With Lucy'' will provide a stronger, less-dependent Lucy. ''She was always kind of childlike,'' says Miss Davis, ''afraid of her husband's disapproval, saying, 'Ricky will kill me!' We wouldn't do that today. She's into jogging and health foods, a grandmother and not a scatterbrained wife. She's gotten a little smarter through the years, and a little more worldly. In several scripts she says things like, 'Why am I clinging to the past?' And she tries to see things through her grandchildren's eyes.''

''Lucy is not as dependent on anyone, except under the blowtorch of Gale,'' says Miss Ball. ''I go into the hardware store and re-arrange everything alphabetically and give them apoplexy.''

She is standing inside the hardware-store set on Stage 1, waiting to rehearse among the rakes and hoses and bins of plastic tubing. The two young children who play her grandchildren pass the time by playing with flashlights on an open shelf. When the rehearsal begins, they come too tentatively into the shop. Told to walk faster, they are still too slow. Patiently, Miss Ball takes them by the hand and demonstrates. She bursts into the shop, shouting ''Grandpa!''

The hardware store was her idea. ''It gives us a lot of gadgets to work with,'' she says, grinning.

In the first show, she fights with a defective fire extinguisher. The following week, the problems will be with a guard goose. (3) ''She doesn't mind working with animals,'' says Miss Davis. During one of the endless waits between scenes, Miss Ball's chair becomes surrounded by crew members eager to listen. ''What are you going to do now, Director Man?'' she teases Peter Baldwin. A few moments later, Mr. Baldwin tells her to deliver a line from the third step of the stairs of the three-story gabled stage house. Instantly, Miss Ball decides that the line works more amusingly from the bottom step instead. ''You don't give a chance for a laugh, if you don't wait,'' she explains to the director who is 25 years her junior.

''I didn't expect it to last,'' Miss Ball said later of ''I Love Lucy.'' ''Nobody wanted me to go into television. Everybody at Metro [M-G-M], where I was under contract, said I was out of my mind. And then, when Desi and I went on a tour and there were 5,000 people outside a steel fence at the Miami Airport and they trampled it, and people knocked down a plate-glass window at the lobby of one hotel - we didn't know what was happening.'' (1) Although Lucille did not want a female co-star, the final episode aired featured Audrey Meadows as Lucy’s sister. Critics remarked on their comic chemistry and theorized that had Meadows been a regular cast member the show might have stood a chance. Too little, too late. 
(2) The series order was reduced to 13, with only 8 episodes airing. A 14th was being plan when the ax fell. 
(3) “Lucy and the Guard Goose” was filmed second, but was replaced with “Lucy Makes a Hit With John Ritter” to boost ratings with a guest star. “Lucy and the Guard Goose” was moved to episode 9, but the show was cancelled after episode 8 on November 15, 1986, and “Guard Goose” went un-aired. Ironically, a clip of the episode featuring the goose was already part of the opening credit sequence, leaving viewers wondering “what’s with the goose?” 
(4) Madelyn Martin is under-rating Lucy’s experience with animals. On “The Lucy Show” there was a pen full of sheep, not just three. On television alone, Ball has worked with seven chimps, three elephants, and milked two cows! This in addition to other animals of almost every description. 
(5) Carroll is referring to “Lucy and Superman” (1956) where Lucy Ricardo impersonates the Man of Steel to surprise her son, making her entrance through a window populated by pigeons. 
(6) Ball is remembering an experience in November 1956 when Lucy and Desi visited Miami in advance of their setting several episodes of “I Love Lucy”.

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, Identity Evropa, which was founded in 2016, works to recruit white men on college campuses to be a part of the white nationalist movement. The SPLC notes that the group’s slogans include “Keep Your Diversity We Want Identity.” And Identity Evropa founder Nathan Damigo has cited David Duke’s My Awakening as one of his influences.
As for Williams’ involvement, AL.com reports that the graduate student posted in an online chat forum connected to Identity Evropa. AL.com reports that in one leaked chat log, Williams wrote, “The immigration policy can narrow the type of person allowed in, but their offspring is very unpredictable.”

“I love the students that I teach,” Williams said to the Chronicle. “And I don’t blame any of them for issues that we have as a cultural clash between our groups. I don’t fear or hate anyone.”
The graduate student also told the Chronicle that he’d copied the CV template from a Pakistani student. “I never meant it to come off as ‘Hey, I’m a white boy,'” he told the outlet.
Identity Evropa’s attempts to recruit students have been spotted at other universities, too. In November, Identity Evropa stickers were found around Duke University’s campus. And in March, one Twitter user reported seeing an Identity Evropa poster at Berkeley.

Modern-day “poll taxes” disenfranchise millions of low-income voters
In 2018, Florida voters made history by approving an amendment to the state constitution restoring the right to vote to formerly incarcerated people with nonviolent felony convictions, overturning a Jim Crow-era law that disenfranchised an estimated 1.4 million potential voters. Low-income people and people of color are disproportionally criminalized, and Florida incarcerates more of its people than any single country on Earth. As a result, one in five Black citizens and 10 percent of the state’s adult population had lost the right to vote under the law — more than any other state in the nation.
The ballot initiative was a major victory for voting rights and racial justice groups, but Republicans in the Florida legislature quickly put up roadblocks for aspiring voters. To “implement” the new law, state lawmakers passed a bill requiring people with felony convictions to pay off all court fines, fees and restitutions related to their sentence and parole or probation, which can include medical debts incurred while in prison and legal costs imposed on low-income people relying on public defenders. A wealthy person found guilty of a crime such as financial fraud may be able to easily afford the cost of regaining their voting rights, but many people who are criminalized cannot. A 2010 analysis of more than 22,000 people on probation, parole or community supervision in Florida found that they owed an average of $8,195 as a result of their sentences, but the average Floridian returning from prison only earns $1,559 a month. Advocates argue this creates an unconstitutional precondition to voting based solely on wealth.
Voting rights groups quickly began calling the requirements a modern-day “poll tax,” a reference to unconstitutional fees imposed at polls in the South to prevent poor Black people from voting. Poll taxes were abolished in the 1960s. Florida is far from alone. For millions of people who have interacted with the criminal legal system in 30 states across the country, the right to vote often hinges on their ability to pay fines and fees related to their sentences, according to a report released today by the Campaign Legal Center and the Civil Rights Clinic at Georgetown Law School. The racial and economic disparities within the criminal legal system are well-known, so these modern-day “poll taxes” are disproportionately imposed on people of color and low-income people who are likely to face additional barriers to employment due to their legal records. Such voters are also more likely to support Democrats and progressive causes.
As of 2016, one in 13 Black citizens had their right to vote revoked compared to one in 56 non-Black voters, a stunning disparity rooted in both the criminal legal system and state laws governing access to the ballot. The report draws a link between today’s debt-related voter disenfranchisement and “Black Codes,” such as poll taxes and literacy tests, instituted in the decades after slavery to prevent Blacks from voting. The Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s successfully fought to eliminate many of these historical barriers to the ballot, but laws barring felons from voting remained. Today, more than half of those who have lost the right to vote are no longer incarcerated and live in a state that could deny them the right to vote based on their wealth, according to the report.
“With these laws in particular, they are not race neutral,” said Chiraag Bains, director of legal strategies at Demos, in a call with reporters. “These laws are deeply rooted in an attempt to exclude Black people from our democracy.”
Today, only Vermont and Maine do not revoke any voting rights for people with felony convictions: They are the only states in the nation where people in prison can vote. In 16 states, voting rights are typically restored automatically after release from prison. Thirty states provide paths toward regaining voting rights after incarceration, but these paths are often blocked when would-be voters are unable to pay off their criminal legal system debt. In Florida, Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia and Tennessee — all states with some of the highest incarceration rates on the planet — state law explicitly demands that convicted felons pay off “legal financial obligations” before regaining the right to vote. In 20 states, people convicted of felonies can regain the right to vote after completing parole or probation, which requires full payment of fines and fees. In Iowa and Kentucky, only clemency granted by the governor will restore voting rights, and this typically requires paying any outstanding legal debts to the system — otherwise, people with felony convictions are disenfranchised for life.
“If you are going to refer to voting as a right … then why should money ever come into the equation, period?” said Aderson Francois, professor and director of the Civil Rights Clinic at Georgetown Law. “We don’t say [formerly incarcerated people] can’t get their right to free speech back unless they pay.”
Are these “legal financial obligations” actually debts to society that should be paid before entering the ballot booth? That question is sure to come up as voting disenfranchisement regimes are challenged in court. In some cases, sentences include “restitution” payments to crime victims. However, the criminal legal system often requires defendants to pay for their own prosecution and even incarceration, parole and probation. Additionally, judges may impose fines as a form of punishment.
Most courts and many probation and parole offices also collect fines and fees, including late fees if other fines are not paid on time. In fact, late fees can stand in the way. After voting in the 2008 and 2012 election, Alfonzo Tucker Jr. of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, received a letter informing him that he had been purged from the state’s voter rolls because of a 20-year-old conviction. Tucker, a Black man, was told to pay $1,515 in fines and fees; he signed up for a payment plan and paid $1,511. The state imposed a $135 late fee over the last $4 and later used this debt to prevent Tucker from voting in the 2018 midterms. Under the law in Alabama, at least, late fees cannot be used to disenfranchise a voter, but right-wing myths about ballot fraud have made voter purges common in many states. With help from the Alabama Voting Rights Project, Tucker has since paid the $4 and regained his right to vote. However, late fees continue to disenfranchise untold numbers of people.
“They are keeping mainly Black people from voting here,” Tucker said during a conference call, adding that his son also received a letter from the state about losing his right to vote due to criminal charges, even though he has never been arrested for a crime.
Where is the money from all these fines and fees going? In many jurisdictions, this revenue is used to fund court and police operations and even to pad unrelated municipal coffers, according to the report. Consider Ferguson, Missouri, where a 2014 uprising in response to the police killing of an unarmed Black teenager turned the city into a poster-child for racist policing and excessive force. Federal investigators determined that the city government (made up mostly of white folks) had set a target for $3 million in revenue from criminal fines and fees — revenue that was raised by targeting Black residents for tickets and arrests.
For many, the cost of being criminalized quickly adds up. Finding a job can be difficult after incarceration, and families often must help with lingering costs. In one survey, the average family owed about $13,600 in fines and fees alone. Among low-income families, 58 percent were unable to afford theses costs, and 67 percent of formerly incarcerated family members were still unemployed or underemployed five years after their release. Nationally, 10 million people in the United States owe more than $50 billion in fines and fees related to criminal convictions, according to the report. This explains why so many people complete their sentences but remain too poor to regain their voting rights. Some states do provide waivers for those who are unable to pay all of their “legal financial obligations,” but the application process varies widely from state to state and is often confusing and onerous, according to the report.
However, thanks to the work of activists and formerly incarcerated people, some states are moving toward reform, unlinking voting from payment of fees. Colorado and Nevada changed their laws this year, and now people convicted of nonviolent felonies in those states regain voting rights automatically after incarceration. Restoring the right to vote automatically following a prison sentence is the most effective way to end modern-day poll taxes, according to the report. Of course, states could also pass laws assuring the right to vote to everyone — whether they are incarcerated or not.

Checklist for Forming a Corporation in Florida
Florida Incorporation and company registration.
Contact the Florida Secretary of State to determine if the proposed corporate name is available for registration. The proposed name of your corporation must be “distinguishable upon the records” of the secretary of state. A name is not considered to be distinguishable from another name if the only difference is:
a) reversing of words (e.g., Fast Copy, Copy Fast);
b) use of Arabic numbers or Roman numerals (e.g., Jim’s Sales I, Jim’s Sales II);
c) use of possessives (e.g., Thompson Auto Body, Thompson’s Auto Body);
d) phonetic spelling (e.g., Quick, Kwik).
2) Determine the availability of the proposed corporate name in any other states in which the business will operate.
3) File the articles of incorporation with the Florida Secretary of State, Business Services Division.
1) The name of the corporation must end with “Company,” “Co.,” “Corporation,” “Corp.,” “Incorporated,” or “Inc.”
2) The articles must indicate the corporation’s principal office—city, village or township, and county.
3) The articles must state the number of authorized shares that can be issued and their express terms. NOTE: The number of shares authorized determines the filing fee.
4) If the corporation plans to have an initial stated capital, it must be included.
5) You may appoint the initial board of directors in the articles.
6) The articles must be signed by all incorporators.
4) Incorporators, or the directors if named in the articles, should start a corporate minute book by acknowledging the filing of the articles and including the original of the filed articles.
a) Incorporators, or the directors if named in the articles, should authorize the issuance of shares.
b) The investors should sign a subscription agreement, the agreement in which the investor agrees to buy the shares for a given price.
c) The incorporators, or the directors if named in the articles, may set the value of noncash assets in payment of the subscriptions.
d) The incorporators, or the directors if named in the articles, accept the subscriptions.
e) The incorporators must give notice of the first shareholders’ meeting.
5) Consider electing a “Subchapter S” corporation status for federal and state tax purposes. See Sections 1362 et seq. of the Internal Revenue Code.
a) Use IRS Form 2553. File with the Internal Revenue Service Center, within the 16th day of the third month of the beginning of the tax year.
b) Shareholders and the corporation must file a notice of the subchapter selection with the Florida Department of Taxation.
6) If the business will operate under a name other than its corporate name, a fictitious name must be filed with the Florida Secretary of State.
7) Make sure your business complies with the Florida securities laws. The most common exemption from the Florida registration requirements for small businesses is a small business equity investment to ten or fewer investors. To comply with this exemption, the subscription agreement must include statements that:
1) the purchaser is aware that no market may exist for resale of the securities;
2) the purchaser is aware of any restrictions on the transfer of the securities, and
3) the purchaser declares that the purchase of equity is for investment purposes and not for redistribution. If there are non-Florida investors, check with their resident state security regulator.
8) Make sure your business complies with federal securities laws. Registration is required unless an exemption is available. Following are the two most common exemptions for small businesses:
a) Intrastate exemption
b) Private placement exemption
9) Obtain the taxpayer identification number from the Internal Revenue Service. Submit Form SS-4. See the procedure set forth on the IRS website: www.irs.ustreas.gov. Note that any person filing a Form SS-4 other than a corporate officer must be designated as the Third Party Designee on the Form SS-4. To handle any other tax matters for the corporation, a person must also file Form 2848 with the IRS.
a) By filing the Form SS-4, the corporation is automatically pre-enrolled in the Electronic Tax Payment System.
b) By filing the form SS-4, the corporation will receive the IRS Circular E Employee’s Tax Guide – Forms for Payroll.
10) Take the following action at the first shareholders’ meeting or by written consent of all
shareholders.
a) Elect directors.
b) If the directors named in the articles have not done so, the shareholders should adopt
the code of regulations for the internal government of the corporation.
c) Consider adopting a close corporation agreement
d) Set value for any non-cash payments by investors to the corporation.
e) Consider adopting a shareholder’s buy and sell agreement.
f) Set the fiscal year for the corporation.
11) Take the following action at the first meeting of the board of directors or by written consent of all directors.
a) Elect officers.
b) Set up a bank account by adopting a bank-provided resolution.
c) Consider adopting benefit plans.
d) Consider adopting a group term life insurance plan (see Internal Revenue Code Section 79).
e) Consider adopting accident and health insurance plan (see Internal Revenue Code Section 105[b]).
f) Consider adopting medical reimbursement plan (see Internal Revenue Code Section 105[b]).
g) Consider adopting a death benefit plan (see Internal Revenue Code Section 101[b]). h) Consider adopting a Section 1244 plan. This allows the stockholders to take an ordinary tax loss rather than a capital loss if the business fails and the stockholders lose their investment (see Internal Revenue Code Section 1244).
i) Adopt a resolution for leasing business space.
j) Adopt a resolution for the purchase of any real estate.
k) Set compensation of key employees
12) Consider requiring key employees to execute employment agreements with covenants not to compete.
13) Issue stock certificates or transaction statements for paid shares.
14) Consider adopting policies about the following issues to protect the company, the directors and the executives:
a) sexual harassment;
b) non-discrimination;
c) trade secret protection;
d) company ethics (e.g., corporate gifts, anti-kickbacks);
e) email, computer and Internet use;
f) compliance with environmental laws;
g) compliance with the anti-trust laws;
h) compliance with the worker safety rules;
i) development of procedures to prevent the hiring of illegal aliens, and
j) political contributions.
15) Obtain the following posters to be placed conspicuously in the workplace:
a) Florida Civil Rights;
b) Fair Labor Standards Act – Minimum Wage poster;
c) Employee Polygraph Protection Act – poster advising employees of federal rights when confronted by a request from an employer to undergo a lie detector test;
d) rights of employees under the Family and Medical Leave Act poster;
e) posted notice of the company’s anti-discrimination policy and anti-harassment policy (sex, race, national origin, etc.);
f) Federal Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) poster (states the rights of employees under OSHA);
g) Federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission poster;
h) Florida Wage and Hour requirements poster
16) Apply for an income tax withholding agent. File Application for Registration as a withholding Agent, with the Florida Department of Taxation.

Florida State University will celebrate its academic and athletic success during FSU Day at the Capitol.
The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday.
It will showcase several of the university’s colleges and academic departments, which will have displays and information tables set up on the first three floors of the Capitol.
An outdoor pep rally will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the plaza between the old and new Capitol buildings.
The pep rally will feature remarks by President John Thrasher, recognition of FSU alumni serving in the Legislature, recognition of FSU’s national champion softball and soccer teams and performances by the FSU cheerleaders, members of the Flying High Circus and a pep band from the College of Music.
Thrasher and the FSU Student Government Association will co-host a reception, “Seminole Evening,” from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday on the 22nd floor of the Capitol where members of the FSU SGA will recognize FSU legislators.
All events are free and open to the public. Fans are encouraged to wear garnet and gold apparel during the festivities.

FAMU Alumnus Receives USAID Award
FAMU Alumna Jodi-Kaye Wade was awarded a United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Award for negotiating an agreement to unlock private capital for the renewable energy and energy efficient sectors in Nigeria.

Florida lawmaker fires aide who allegedly called mass shooting survivors 'actors'
An aide to a Florida state lawmaker was fired on Tuesday after he allegedly referred to some survivors of last week's mass shooting as “actors that travel to various crisis when they happen,” officials said.
Florida state Rep. Shawn Harrison said he was "appalled" by the comments made by his district secretary, Benjamin Kelly, earlier in the day and supported a decision to have him terminated.
Harrison also apologized for “any pain this has caused” to families of the victims in last week’s mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where a former student allegedly shot and killed 17 students and teachers.
"Tonight Mr. Kelly was terminated from his position as my District Secretary. I am appalled at and strongly denounce his comments about the Parkland students," Harrison said in a statement posted on Twitter Tuesday night. "I am again sorry for any pain this has caused the grieving families of this tragedy."
Kelly reportedly made the bogus claims in an email sent from his state account to a local reporter, Alex Leary, who posted a screenshot of the email on Twitter Tuesday.
“Here's the email,” Leary tweeted. “I asked for more information to back up the claim and was sent another email that linked to a YouTubeconspiracy video.”
U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., also appeared to lash out at Kelly over the alleged email in a tweet on Tuesday, although he didn’t mention him by name.
“Claiming some of the students on TV after #Parkland are actors is the work of a disgusting group of idiots with no sense of decency,” Rubio said.

News of Kelly’s firing surfaced just hours after Stoneman Douglas students descended on the state’s Capitol building in Tallahassee, where the Florida House voted down a measure that would've banned assault rifles like the one used in the deadly shooting. Job Description As a Registered Nurse (RN), Home Infusion you will work outside the walls of a hospital setting in a growing specialized area of the nursing field. Florida’s Minimum Wage to Increase to $8.25 per hour –What About the Loonie, eh?
I originally hail from Toronto, Canada.  As an employment attorney now practicing in Florida, I enjoy comparing US employment laws with their Canadian counterparts.  So first, the news from Florida.
On January 1, 2018, Florida’s minimum wage will increase from $8.10 per hour to $8.25 per hour. This adjustment is based on the federal Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers in the South Region. For a full-time Florida employee earning the minimum wage, the increase results in $6 more per week, or $312 a year, before taxes and deductions. This increase is more substantial than last year’s increase of $104 before taxes and deductions.
Employers of tipped employees that are eligible for a tip credit under the Fair Labor Standards Act may continue to take a tip credit of up to $3.02. However, beginning January 1, 2018, these Florida employers must pay tipped employees a direct wage of $5.23 per hour.
So what’s the minimum wage in Ontario (the province in which Toronto is located) these days?  Today its $11.60 CAD (roughly $9.11 USD) per hour.   Ontario’s Premier aims to increase the minimum wage to $15 CAD (roughly $11.79 USD) per hour by January 2019.  To my Canadian friends, that is seven toonies and one loonie. (For non-native speakers, the Canadian $2 coin is called the toonie and the $1 coin is called the loonie-named after the loon, a common Canadian bird, pictured on the coin.)
Although it seems one figure is clearly higher than Florida, don’t forget that Canadians pay more in taxes including a value added tax on almost all our retail purchases, which is much higher than Florida’s sales tax. So I am not sure who has the higher effective minimum wage.
While the new Florida minimum wage is an interesting topic to discuss over a Thanksgiving dinner or a Holiday cocktail party, Florida employers should remember to implement the new minimum wage on January 1, 2018, and to replace their Florida minimum wage poster with the new one.
