Three Dog Night Drummer and Co-founder Floyd Sneed Dies at 80
- “A complete original and a sweetheart of a man,” band says
Floyd Sneed, founding drummer of Three Dog Night, died Jan. 27 at 80, his former brother-in-law, Tommy Chong said.
Sneed died “after a battle with poor health,” Chong said.
A “saddened” Three Dog Night eulogized their former drummer as “an absolutely wonderful human being, a complete original and a sweetheart of a man.
“He was also an extraordinarily unique drummer who brought so much to Three Dog Night’s sound.”
Sneed played with the group during its initial 1968-1974 run and again from 1981-’84. He was a member of the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame.
Former Three Dog Night singer Chuck Negron remembered his “friend and musical peer” as “a unique and powerful drummer and more importantly a kind and special human being,” in a post on social media.
“I love you, Floyd, and I will keep you in my heart always,” Negron said.

For a short time,1968-72, Three Dog Night ruled the pop charts. Although derided by critics as a slick cover band, the listening audience rewarded them time and again with hit after hit. They were really kind of typical bar/lounge band, with ace pickers behind three voice who could sing lead, or deliver competent, if not inspired harmonies. What set the band apart was their song selection, although it's not known if it was the band or the producers who chose them, they were inspired choices. They sang songs by up and coming songwriters, most of whom had not been noticed by the general public. Their first album featured the hit "One" by Harry Nillson, the B-side of the 45 was "Chest Fever" from The Band. The three vocalists were solid front men, able to trade off leads depending on the song. Cory Wells, Danny Hutton and Chuck Negron were convincing, if limited singers, but knowing what they could and couldn't handle is one of the key elements of their early success. The rest of the band were also flexible enough to meet the demands of the material, with Mike Alsup on guitar, Jimmy Greenspoon on keyboards, Joe Schermie on bass and Floyd Sneed on drums. They hit their popular stride with "Suitable for Framing" in 1969, scoring hits wih "Easy to be Hard", from the musical "Hair", "Eli's Coming" from the brilliant Laura Nyro, and Gary Bonner's "Celebrate" which became something of an anthem for a while.
The album also introduced American audiences to Elton John and Bernie Taupin through their cover of "Lady Samantha." They saw their first number one hit in 1970 with Randy Newman's "Mama Told Me (not to come)", which cemented their superstar status. The groups best remembered song "Joy to the World" came out the next year, bringing overdue attention to it's author, Hoyt Axton. The hits kept coming as they covered Paul Williams on "Just an Old Fashioned Love Song", who also provided "The Family of Man." They also hit pay dirt with another Axton song, "Never Been to Spain." "Black and White" was a big hit for them in '72, but after that, the group began to struggle. Internal conflict and personal issues began to plague them, and as the covers became less impressive, the lounge act style of the band began to show. Although they were never an outstanding group, Three Dog Night did do pop music a great service by bringing talented songwriters material to the market place. For that we should all give them a hand, especially when we hear a bar band belt out one of their hits.
