Do you guys having a specific actor you imagine Floyd Thursby as when you watch The Maltese Falcon? Despite them both looking nothing alike, I've alternatively seen him being played by both Charles Laughton and Boris Karloff

Lately I've been thinking of a Maltese Falcon Spongebob AU. No particular reason. It just exists as doodles in my sketchbook. I quite like the episode SquidNoir and I wish it turned into its own thing like the gal pals episodes. A series of SquidNoir type episodes where they'd parody a famous film noir each episode. And one in particular I've been thinking of is The Maltese Falcon. In this case should it be called The Maltese Clam?
Tumblr media
Obviously Squidward Tentacles jazz detective will be Same Spade. And obviously Slappy Laszlo the Peter Lorre fish will be Peter Lorre's character Joel Cairo, but I've been having a hard time filling out the rest.
Tumblr media
I think I'd rather have Spongebob be Effie Purine so he doesn't die in the first part of the movie playing Miles Archer. But if I DID make Sponge Miles Archer, the implication that Squidward was having an affair with Sponge's wife would be hilarous. Except instead of his wife, it would be his best friend Patrick (like those Spongebob episodes where Patrick and Squidward get along really well without Spongebob)
Tumblr media
I've also thought of Effie being Sandy as well but I feel like Sandy deserves more than to be a secretary :(
I really want Squilliam to be Brigid O'shaughnessy because Squilliam being a femme fatale feels like a match made in heaven. Also for him to have Squidward as a love interest?? In SpongeBob they act like bitter exes. With the ending of The Maltese Falcon, I think we'd have an explanation why.
The rest of the spots aren't quite filled yet. I'm on the fence of making Mr. Krabs be Casper Gutman because WHY would Slappy be working for him? And who would be Wilmer Cook? I feel like it could be Plankton. Instead of being young, he's just short (bacteria do be short!). Also the implication that Casper Gutman and Wilmer Cook being lovers is also funny. Just like the show, they get betrayed and I can definitely see Krabs betraying plankton to save his own skin.
Tumblr media
There's no one for Floyd Thursby tho. It's not that important since you never get to see him in the movie but perhaps Sandy? But ya gurl doesn't deserve to get sidelined like that :(
I also don't see her working with Squilliam. Perhaps Perch Perkins? Purely because of the Bikini Bottom inquirer episodes where Perch is essentially an emotional crutch for Squilliam. Of course he'd be the only one to agree to work with Squilliam.

The Maltese Falcon (1941)
In San Francisco in 1941, private investigators Sam Spade and Miles Archer meet prospective client Ruth Wonderly. She claims to be looking for her missing sister, who is involved with a man named Floyd Thursby. Archer agrees to follow her that night and help get her sister back.
Spade is awakened by a phone call early in the morning and the police inform him that Archer has been killed. He meets his friend, Police Detective Tom Polhaus at the murder scene and then tries calling his client at her hotel, but she has checked out. Back at his apartment, he is grilled by Polhaus and Lieutenant Dundy, who tell him that Thursby was also murdered the same evening. Dundy suggests that Spade had the opportunity and motive to kill Thursby, who likely killed Archer. Archer's widow Iva later visits him in his office, believing that Spade shot his partner so he could have her.
Later that morning, Spade meets his client, now calling herself Brigid O'Shaughnessy. She explains that Thursby was her partner and probably killed Archer, but claims to have no idea who killed Thursby. Spade distrusts her, but agrees to investigate the murders.
At his office, Spade meets Joel Cairo , who first offers him $5,000 to find a "black figure of a bird", then pulls a gun on him in order to search the room for it. Spade knocks Cairo out and goes through his belongings. When Cairo comes round, he hires Spade. Later that evening, Spade tells O'Shaughnessy about Cairo. When Cairo shows up, it becomes clear that Spade's acquaintances know each other. Cairo becomes agitated when O'Shaughnessy reveals that the "Fat Man" is in San Francisco.
In the morning, Spade goes to Cairo's hotel, where he spots Wilmer, a young man who had been following him earlier, and gives Wilmer a message for his boss, Kasper Gutman. When Spade goes to meet Gutman, alias the "Fat Man", in his hotel suite, Gutman will only talk about the Black Falcon evasively, so Spade pretends to throw a temper tantrum and storms out. Later, Wilmer takes Spade at gunpoint to see Gutman. Spade overpowers him, but meets Gutman anyway. Gutman relates the history of the Maltese Falcon, then offers Spade $25,000 for the bird and a quarter of the proceeds from its sale. After Spade passes out because his drink is spiked, Wilmer and Cairo come in from another room and leave with Gutman.
On coming round, Spade searches the suite and finds a newspaper with the arrival time of the freighter La Paloma circled. He goes to the dock, only to find the ship on fire. Later, the ship's captain, Jacobi, shot several times, staggers into Spade's office before dying. The bundle he was clutching contains the Maltese Falcon.
O'Shaughnessy calls the office, gives an address, then screams before the line goes dead. Spade stashes the package at the bus terminal, then goes to the address, which turns out to be an empty lot. Spade returns home and finds O'Shaughnessy hiding in a doorway. He takes her inside and finds Gutman, Cairo, and Wilmer waiting for him, guns drawn. Gutman gives Spade $10,000 for the Falcon, but Spade tells them that part of his price is someone he can turn over to the police for the murders of Thursby and Captain Jacobi, suggesting Wilmer. After some intense negotiation, Gutman and Cairo agree and Wilmer is knocked out and disarmed.
Just after dawn, Spade calls his secretary, Effie Perine, to bring him the bundle. However, when Gutman inspects the statuette, he finds it is a fake and Wilmer escapes during the tumult. Recovering his composure, Gutman invites Cairo to return with him to Istanbul to continue their quest. After they leave, Spade calls the police and tells them where to pick up the pair. Spade then angrily confronts O'Shaughnessy, telling her he knows she killed Archer to implicate Thursby, her unwanted accomplice. She confesses, but begs Spade not to turn her over to the police. Despite his feelings for her, Spade gives O'Shaughnessy up.

Watching the maltese falcon again. I know this is quite a "no duh" observation, but I've always thought it was neat how important Thursby is as a character despite not making a single appearance-even as just a voice or a photograph or something. Especially since its not like hes dead yet by the begining of the film or anything

Dreamtime!
So a few nights ago I had a dream that there was a movie called Thursby.
It was about Floyd Thursby from The Maltese Falcon.
If you don’t know the plot of The Maltese Falcon, Floyd Thursby is a character who is set up at the beginning of the story as a sort of red herring/maguffin type character, where you’re supposed to think he is the Person of Interest, but it turns out he’s not, and then Sam Spade is told that he’s dead shortly after that.
ANYWAY.  The movie Thursby was about this guy who shows up wandering on the banks of the river and the only thing he can remember about himself is his name is Thursby.
It was basically a modern noir film about Floyd Thursby trying to re-create his memories of what happened that night and told the story of the events that led up to Sam Spade getting involved in the case of the Maltese Falcon in the book/movie via flashbacks, but all while Thursby is trying to evade arrest in the present day-- because the police are after him, but he doesn’t even remember what for, only that he has to run.  (In the original novel, Thursby was an American living abroad to evade arrest, but I don’t think we ever find out what he was charged with-- if we did, I don’t remember, because the last time I read The Maltese Falcon, I was in high school).
Anyway, it was a pretty cool movie that doesn’t exist and I’m super confused about this because I haven’t watched The Maltese Falcon in at least a few years, and I haven’t read the book since I was 17.   I actually woke up and was like “I totally know the name Floyd Thursby but I don’t know what it’s from” and had to look it up, and then realized he actually IS the dude from The Maltese Falcon.
