Ladybird's first turtle rescue! Fluffy was brought into Hamilton Animal Services as a “stray.” It’s likely someone purchased Fluffy from a pet store when she was small and then abandoned her in the wild when she got too big. Unfortunately, this happens far too often. Releasing pet turtles into the wild can be a death sentence for the turtle, and detrimental to wildlife and the ecosystem. Please, never release a pet turtle into the wild! Turtles who end up at HAS normally go to a local rescue, but the rescue is packed to the brim with turtles at the moment. We’re pretty excited to have Fluffy as our first turtle rescue! We hope we can rescue more in the future. Fluffy is currently settling in at her foster home and seems to be enjoying her new digs. She has a vet appointment coming up to be sure she’s healthy enough to be made available for adoption. We’ll have an update for you after her appointment. Welcome Fluffy! We’re so happy you’re here! Not many people realize that turtles end up in shelters needing rescue. Unfortunately, baby turtles purchased from pet stores are often abandoned in the wild when they grow too large or become too much work. Red eared sliders are the most common breed of turtle this happens to. They are not native to Canada, and the often don’t survive our harsh winters. Fluffy and Shelly here are just two of the hundreds of turtles who found themselves at Hamilton Animal Services. Thankfully they’re now safe in their foster home, but they need a forever home so we can keep rescuing more abandoned turtles! Some of you may remember the video a few weeks ago of Shelly the turtle taking her first swim in the new outdoor turtle pond at her foster home. Well...the other adoptable turtle in our care, Fluffy, has also made the move into the new pond! After a few days of Shelly adjusting to having Fluffy in her space, the two have made friends. Shelly and Fluffy can now be seen swimming together and soaking up rays on a sunny day. Yay for turtle friends! Movin’ on up! Here’s Shelly, taking her first dip in the awesome new turtle pond at her foster home! The pond is enclosed by a short fence all around to prevent escape. As well as lots of swimming space, there’s a large area on land to take a stroll, or relax and bask in the sun. There’s a big pot under the water for hiding in, and (turtle safe) water plants for munching on. Shelly seems to be enjoying her new digs so far! If she’s not adopted before then, she’ll have to move back inside for the winter, but she has all summer and into fall to enjoy the new pond. Fluffy, the other adoptable turtle in our care, is unfortunately losing her current foster home, so we will soon be introducing Fluffy to Shelly. Hopefully they will get along so they can both enjoy the new pond!
