FON102 Phono Ghosts - Solar Dream Reel

Phono Ghosts (alias of producer Neil Scrivin – also behind Meatbingo) returns with his long-awaited second album released via brand new imprint Fonolith.

Building upon the cassette-raiding, micro-sampling methodology and varied sound landscape of 2013’s Chrome Position on Skam Records, Solar Dream Reel is a journey through summery funk, mangled radio jingles, evocative atmospheres and anthemic edit-stomp, all filtered via the shimmery analogue lens of the compact cassette.

A sonic exploration of that borderland between the waking world and sleep – a place everyone has been to but few remember – Phono Ghosts comes back to reality with a selection of vivid Polaroids and cassette memories from his visits to the hypnagogic hinterland of the collective unconscious and presents these pure distilled documents for you on four beautiful sides of vinyl and limited dual-colour (yellow/black) cassette.

This mix turned out to be a bit of a Castles in Space special. It wasn’t the intention it just happened. I blame Colin for injecting so many great releases into my aural universe.

Stunning synth arps and driving beats kick off this episode with AOOOE and “Household Maintenance” on the our favourite Castles in Space label.

(04:04) The heavens open and we go smash about in the “rain” with a self release from ybot.

(08:44) Sombrero Galaxy drive in the beat and bubbly synths on “The Edge Of Space” from the Dutch label Music From Memory.

If you want some more from next album you’ll have to join us on the Castles in Space Subscription library. (15:09) It’s Spectrin with “Duqu”.

(20:13) We get swept away in a “Jet Stream” by Urban Meditation on the Italian label Fantasy Enhancing.

(30:44) Then some lovely synth work by Mark Ellery Griffiths in “Monter”. Self released album and name your price.

(35:20) Ian Boddys’ DiN label offers up a dive into IDM terratory in “Skalka” by d'Voxx.

(41:02) Had to include Phil aka The British Stereo Collective, who I dare call a rather lovely chap, and his cinematic synth strings in “Go For Launch” also on the CiS subscription library so go and subscribe already.

(42:19) Throws us right back into some IDM beats with Lo Five and “Primitive Joy” on, no prizes for guessing, Castles in Space!

Then upsammy treat us to some popping synths at (47:54) with “Wild Chamber” on yet another Dutch label Nous'klaer Audio.

(52:13) Sees another Fantasy Enhancing release by Virgo taking us for a spin in ”Round On Cirque”.

At (57:42) we get dark and haunted with “Perimeter / Outer Zone Breach” by The GulfFire on the UK label Fonolith.

Bringing us right down to yet another CiS Sub. library release (1:00:57) by the wonderful Yves Malone entitled “We Can't Wait For Death” positively morbid.

We stay with CiS at (1:05:03) with a “proper” release by Dean Honer “Division St.” there’s a 4 AM there somewhere.

We stick with a British label. This time Subexotic Records and another charming dude Salvatore Mercatante and “On The Foot”. (1:06:26)

We end this episode starting at (1:09:59) with the incredible Scottish label, Werra Foxma, and from their Sub Club offerings, that legendary name Ian Boddy rounds off the show with “Teutonium”
