i really like how in ds9 that instead of using science to explain religion or faith they go in reverse, using ‘wormhole aliens’ repeatedly in the beginning, and then over time sisko becomes kind of ingrained into this idea that it doesn’t need to be explained or detached from bajoran spirituality. like there are very intentional moments where they point out how uncomfortable starfleet is with calling them prophets or with sisko becoming more sincerely interested in bajor in general, and i think by having the main character be the person who embraces not having to rationalize everything, it gives more credit to faith and spirituality in a way that most star treks usually avoid
#i have had a post in my drafts forever that i cannot make make sense#about non-linear/linear modes of thought and their respective cultural associations with spirituality/science and how science and star trek#have always been non-linear but struggle with admitting that because we want to view science as always a line going forward towards progress#and not a series of events that sometimes take two steps forward and then three steps back#idk i say this all as a scientist and ? agnostic i just think it's interesting and i hate the condescension towards religion in tng#star trek blogging#like even removing religion from the equation its a really necessary convo about ethics in science of like#for example is inventing the combustible engine really a step forward objectively#if it also ended up bringing us into climate change. not even getting into weapons
