In 1846,  local outbreak spurred the Fort’s doctor into vaccinating all who lied in the Fort, and all those who lived on the island (through agency of the local Catholic priest, who acted as his proxxy, after instruction).

Michigan's first trails were not made by native Americans but ranging buffalo herds in migration. This was especially true on the St. Joseph trail in Southwest Michigan. The major trails in lower Michigan tended to link Indian settlements of Mackinac, Detroit, Saginaw, and Niles. The area around Saginaw had the most native American settlements in the Great Lakes region.

Noted below are native trails that we travel everyday.

Shore Line Trail - A minor trail starting near Toledo and hugging Lake Erie's shore, the Straits of Detroit. Past Fort Gratiot and Lake Huron to a spot near White Rock. White Rock was considered a solemn spiritual place of offering. Today this route is mirrored by Lakeshore Drive from Detroit to Lexington and M-25 north. This trail continues north along the entire shore to Cheboygan. It was considered a minor trail as travel via canoe was preferred along this route. Michigan chose to utilize much of the original Native American trail along Lake Huron and Saginaw Bay to create M-25. Paving of Michigan's First Scenic Highway was started in 1933 and completed in 1940.

Saginaw Trail - One of the oldest trails, this Sauk trail system, went from the Straits of Detroit to Saginaw. Today this starts at the Detroit River and heads northwest up Woodward Avenue to Pontiac, then continues up Dixie Highway through Flint to Saginaw.

Sand Ridge Indian Trail - An ancient trail from Saginaw to Port Austin in Michigan's Thumb. Used primarily for access to the rich hunting ground of the Thumb. Today, M-25 follows much of the same route. However, the old trail is still evident and marked as Sand Road in Huron County. A major canoe passage across Saginaw Bay occurred at Oak Point via Charity Island to reach the AuSable River.

St. Joseph's Trail - A major east-west system called Route du Sieur de la Salle and the Territorial Road. When the Territorial road was first built from Plymouth to St Joseph, a portion of the road was ‘corduroy.’ which means wood lo

I'm celebrating The Glorious 25th of May with a trip to Mackinac Island.

Mackinac Island has a number of historical sites, including a fort built during a revolution (in place of barricades), horse drawn carriages instead of cars are used (as in Ankh-Morpork), the island is covered in lilacs (like Lobsneaks Alley), and legend says that the island is actually the back of a giant turtle (like the Disc). As you can see, it would be a glorious site for a Discworld gathering if only there were enough people to do it.

OK, so you've got your Mackinac Bridge, your Mackinac Island, your Straits of Mackinac, but the city is Mackinaw.

And they're all pronounced the same. What gives ..?

I know - you're hoping for an explanation full of intrigue, or at least humor. Sorry. In fact, the answer is about as pedestrian as you can get:

"The founders of Mackinaw City opted for the phonetic 'aw' spelling, probably as a way to distinguish their town from Mackinac Island for confused postal carriers."

As for the derivation of "Mackinac." legend has it that Natives thought the shape of the island resembled a turtle (how they discerned that without aircraft or drone I don't know).

Anyway, they named the island "Mitchimakinak," which meant "big turtle." Then the French changed it to "Michilimackinac," which remains the name of the fort at Mackinaw City. The English shortened it it "Mackinac."

On the topic of Oh My Clementine, I once heard another version of the song (at Fort Mackinac) and it included a lyric about the man getting excited about now having the chance to go after his dead girlfriends younger sister. I never thought it before your poll, but I am now convinced that poor Clementine was in fact killed

Yeah!!! That was one of the verses that inspired that post.

The version I learned was "how I missed her, how I missed her, oh my darling Clementine, 'till I kissed her little sister, then I forget my Clementine"

Very creepy, but it definitely lends some credence to the idea that the narrator might have had a motive to push her into the water.

Also, songs about men being sad they murdered their girlfriend are weirdly common in American folk music so it wouldn't shock me at all if Oh My Darling Clementine was simply another song in that genre

Fort Mackinac - Mackinac Island, Michigan

Main Street in Mackinac Island is very endearing, with its well maintained old buildings and all the horse drawn carriages. I didn’t photograph most of the best parts because we were zooming by on our bikes, but it’s quite charming with lovely cottages and big gardens.

Fortunately we had a perfectly overcast day, which meant no oppressive heat and no overpowering horse poop smells. All we could smell was the delicious scent of the multiple fudge shops in town. You can watch them make the fudge through the windows.

We enjoyed some Michigan Chocolate Cherry fudge on the lawn in front of the fort before climbing our way up the hill. (And we enjoyed some Double Chocolate Caramel fudge after we walked back down the hill…)

All of us enjoyed Fort Mackinac. The kids found the displays of 1800s life fascinating and we watched a rifle demonstration, cannon firing and an explanation of an 1870s soldier’s gear, all of which were informative and short enough to hold our interest.

The views from the top also did not disappoint. You can see the Mackinac Bridge off in the distance and watch all the boats coming and going from the island.

The island was more beautiful than I had anticipated, and thanks to shoulder season the number of tourists was low. I enjoyed this day trip more than I thought I would. Kira loved the lack of cars and proclaimed we should live like that everywhere - until I pointed out how long it would have taken us to drive around Michigan in a horse drawn carriage. I think she is back on team automobile.

Mackinac Island is one of the few places in this commuter state where there are no cars. That’s right! Zero cars except for emergency responders. Everyone else walks, rides a bike, or travels by horse.

Despite the smell of horse manure in the street, Mackinac Island is a gorgeous island with fascinating history. This island was the site of one of the only land invasions of US territory in history. It was taken over by the British during the War of 1812, the same war in which the White House was burnt to the ground. Both attempts to retake the island and Fort Mackinac failed, but we got them back after the war.

There are two big landmarks on the island visible from Mackinac City. The Grand Hotel and Fort Mackinac are visible even from miles away. The ice cream in the Grand Hotel is absolutely to die for!

And yes, Mackinac Island Fudge is really good!

Reconstruction of Fort Holmes (2015)

Fort Holmes is a small, wood and earthen fort on the southern end of the highest ridge on Mackinac Island. The fort was constructed by British soldiers in 1814 during the War of 1812 and named Fort George in honor of Britain’s King George III. The fort was constructed to protect Fort Mackinac against an anticipated United States attack during the war. That attack came in the summer of 1814 although the fort was not directly involved in the battle. When United States soldiers peacefully reoccupied the island after the War of 1812 the fort was renamed Fort Holmes in honor of American Major Andrew Hunter Holmes who was killed in the 1814 battle of Mackinac Island.

The fort was occupied by United States troops for just a few years after the War of 1812. It was eventually abandoned and allowed to decay.
