Some days are better than others. So are some weeks and some months. Twenty-two months ago, when Peace Corps revealed where I would be living and working, I was told that the rural, government health center, which had never had a Volunteer before, would need someone with my "resiliency." An ability to bounce back and recover from difficulties. Someone who could comfortably work within ambiguity, build networks, and find my place where there was none. During my service, I've learned to spin motivation out of complete exhaustion, find the positive in the frustrating, and pull myself up to try again with each failure. But honestly, sometimes it wears me down. Teachers that want to work with me don't call to let me know we have a lesson scheduled or cancel as soon as I show up. No dent has been made in the number of malaria cases we see a week at the health center. I still spend a lot of my time waiting for the next thing to happen. I get tired of being the white anomaly, where everything I do is watched by every person in my village, all of the time. My motivation is the lowest it's been with four months of my service remaining, and some mornings it's a struggle to just walk out the door. My "bounce back" is more of a crawl. It's the more-frequent-lows that come with the most-memorable-highs. The reality of being a Peace Corps Volunteer. And somewhere in there, I'm sure that resiliency is teaching me to be a stronger, wiser, better person, even when I can't see it and the days suck. The inner voice that always, eventually, bounces back and says, "YOU'VE GOT THIS." #resiliency #fourmoremonths #ytt #uganda #peacecorps #peacecorpsuganda
