Ah, the “official” beginning of the slow burn romance that lasted three seasons and a movie.

The mere six words were packed with so much power and emotions. Transforming from a vulnerable young lady who was physically, mentally, and sexually abused by her lover to the independent and strong woman ten years later, Phryne had gone through quite a journey. Although this reunion was not by her choice, I reckoned that she was glad to have the opportunity to confront the demon from her past.

What Phryne felt was best might not always be in line with what the conventional wisdom considered “right”, but she had the courage to go against the grain and carry it through. In most cases, she did turn out to be right (as High pointed out in S2E13 Murder Under the Mistletoe). On International Women’s Day, may we all be inspired to be an independent thinker like Phryne and be brave enough to challenge those who do not share our vision.

It’s hard to believe that I have been posting Miss Fisher for nine years now. I might have other things better to do with my time, but this is definitely way more fun, and I intend to continue.

Today is Teacher’s Day in the U.S. (Tuesday of Teacher Appreciation Week, which takes place in the first full week of May), and I am dedicating this post to Phryne’s childhood teacher, Miss Charlesworth.
From this exchange in S1E8 Away with the Fairies, we learned that Miss Charlesworth fought, and won, the battle against Henry George (not yet Baron of Richmond-upon-Thames) Fisher so that little Phryne could continue her education. Adult Phryne was no longer grubby, but she was definitely clever thanks to Miss Charlesworth who recognized her potential and gave her the chance to fulfill it.
Many fellow Miss Fisher fans are educators by trade, and I have the utmost resect for them. It’s a profession that requires subject matter expertise, infinite patience, and a fighting spirit. Definitely not for the faint of heart.

Honoring International Labor Day with a snippet by Mary from S2E12 Unnatural Habits. Her character might be minor, but her fighting spirit was anything but.
Being impregnated by a factory foreman against her will, Mary sought shelter from the church. Instead of receiving empathy and the proper care from the nuns, she was given a different name, Ada, because “You ain't fit to kiss the Holy Mother's feet, let alone share her name”. In spite of her condition, Mary was forced to perform heavy laundry duty in a horrendous working condition alongside other “fallen girls” while constantly being reminded to “beg our Lord's forgiveness for your wicked, ungrateful attitude”.
Mary’s defiant response “If I do that, do you think He'll start paying us wages?” caught Phryne’s attention. When told that “The Magdalene Laundries are exempt from usual labor laws”, she was as determined as Mary to “stir up dissatisfaction with the talk of workers' rights and regulations”. It was a joy to watch the two kindred spirits developing a bond and interacting with each other.
Speaking of a special bond, I loved the relationship between Mary and the “rich old battleaxe” (aka Aunt Prudence) too. Not only did Aunt P help Mary deliver the baby, but she also decided to take the pair in. I could imagine the two feisty women clash often, but the Stanley household would certainly be more lively because of it.

While Hugh was learning about the concept of “a paradox of pursuing a modern woman”, Dot was shedding tears in front of Miss Phryne, agonizing over “the way things are for married women”. As usual, Phryne provided guidance while letting her protégé reach her own conclusion, but this was such an important yet difficult life decision that for once Dot was probably hoping Miss Phryne would straight up tell her what to do.

Before meeting Miss Fisher, Dot would have never dreamt of becoming a lady’s companion/private detective assistant, let alone a columnist for a reputable magazine. Instead of jumping on the opportunity to further her career, Dot politely declined Miss Charlesworth’s offer. She wasn’t shying away from the challenge as she knew that she could handle it. However, being capable of something didn’t necessarily mean enjoy doing it. Solving cases with Miss Phryne was certainly dangerous at times (especially when motoring in the Hispano-Suiza was involved), but everything else was exhilarating, and different. She loved her life and wouldn’t have traded it for anything else.

Happy New Year from Phryne and Jack. May the year of 2024 wrap us all in bright sunshine underneath a sky of blue.
********************
p.s. This edit was originally posted on 28-Sep-2020 as part of my “Miss Fisher Toast Masters” series. Real life of 2023 ended in somewhat a low note for me, and I even contemplated quitting Miss Fisher altogether. At the end, I simply couldn’t completely detach myself from the fandom that has enriched my life in so many ways the last ten years. I chose to reuse this edit because it signifies my wish and effort to be sailing on a sunbeam to my fellow Miss Fisher fans as the new year begins.

Pansy got a point here. Phryne never forgot her humble beginning, but it’s also a fact that the title and fortune her family inherited had boosted her social standing and allowed her the opportunity to realize her private detective dream. Not to take anything away from Phryne’s pluckiness, but when you were rich, powerful, and beautiful, more doors were open for you.
A few years ago, I read a fanfic about Phryne and Jack went deep undercover in Collingwood (or Richmond?), living as a dirt-poor couple. There were no fancy clothes, house servants, or extravagant parties as we saw on the show or read in the books. The two of them had to manage their own cooking, cleaning, and other house chores while conducting their investigations. It was so far removed from the glamourous Phryneverse that I had difficulty reconciling the two worlds and ended up not finishing it even though it was brilliantly written.
What about you? Do you think you would enjoy Phryne as much without her glam?

True to the book series, Jane loved books in the TV show. In S2E3 Dead Man’s Chest, we learned that Phryne was sending her to the Continent to further her education, but it was not clear what she was studying. In contrast, Kerry Greenwood had laid out a career path for her quite early on, a doctor. She spent many pages describing how Jane immersed herself in medical textbooks and drew wisdom from Dr. Mac.
In the episode of Dead Man’s Chest, Jane had a twinkle in her eye after meeting the McNaster’s errand boy, Kip. It’s hard to say if there would be a budding romance between the two should she have stayed in Melbourne instead of barging on her adventure overseas. This snippet from Book 19 Unnatural Habits, however, implied that Jane was not interested in marriage or children as she was fully devoted to her career aspiration.
This is what I loved about reading the books. They filled in the backstories that the TV series couldn’t elaborate in a short hour.
