Defining things, or doing what works for me.
So last week I decided to go vegan. yeah well the day I flew to Nice, I had the worst nausea from my hangover and the only thing I know that really works to cure that is fatty food such as cheeseburgers. Yeah I know. Well yes I ate a fucking cheeseburger at the airport, and immediately felt sick no longer. Throughout my trip I had controversy over what I was eating. I had a lot of rice and veggies and bread. Being that this is France, bread is a given staple. I dont like consuming much bread, but tortillas for burritos were a good substitute. Eating rice really doesnt agree with my digestive system and my body cant process it, so Ive decided against it. Veggies and beans were okay for most days but making vegan pizza wasnt the same without Daiya cheese. Theres no vegan cheese or nutritional yeast in France, evidently.
I had a couple conversations and arguments with the kid I was traveling with over veganism and animal liberation and what-not. Whereas I agree with most ideals of animal liberation, Im not entirely opposed to having pets. Im okay with people who own their own chickens and eat the eggs. Im also okay with small farms who produce milk and eggs and cheese for distribution or sale in their town. If the animals are treated humanely, not cooped up with unjust conditions, its not some terrible wrongdoing. Not everyones okay with just surviving off plants, I get that. Im not necessarily okay with the idea of eating meat raised in foul conditions and inhumanely slaughtered. Im not entirely sure of whether or not I think this is okay to "humanely" slaughter livestock on small farms that only aim to feed themselves or their neighbors. I dont think its right, however, I see it on a more acceptable scale than the mass over-production of, pesticide and antibiotic-fed, and slaughter of livestock for nation-wide or world-wide sale [factory farming].
Today I was hungover again before flying home to Paris and upon arrival, I ate the dinner my parents had prepared. This included a burger along with broccoli and potatoes. I had a long conversation/argument with my step-dad over the ethics I believe, and what I actually practice. I believe whole-heartedly in not eating meat, yet I have yet to give it up. He sees this as me pretending to believe in a trend that must be popular amongst my friends, although not actually agreeing with it myself. I see his point of view but classify it along with #parentsthinktheyknoweverything and #parentsdontunderstand. As step one, I have got to stop drinking so a slaughtered, ground up cow doesnt have to be my cure to a party-night.聽I plan to curb this hypocritical stuff but Im not claiming vegetarian or vegan or straight edge or anything. I dont need to.聽
Im hoping to have my brother bring me nutritional yeast [along with jell-o, brown sugar, cream of wheat, and peanut butter] when he visits in the winter. Or Ill have to find more endowed penpals to send me these noms.
