Valley Striper Fly Fishing Report
Capt. Chuck Regan reports on 7.19.18
Summer Striper fishing in the river has been heating up in the Sacramento, Feather and Yuba Rivers.
Tumblr media
If you’ve experienced the solitude our rivers offer in the summer and the sheer power of morone saxatilis corking a 9wt then you’re most likely already on the books for this year.  If you haven’t enjoyed these fisheries yet, don’t hesitate to book as available dates are already filling through to fall.
See you at the boat launch! Capt. Chuck Ragan

Trinity River Fly Fishing Report
Brian Clemens reports on 2.9.17
This year has been a crazy wet mess so I hope all of you have stayed safe and dry while mother nature shows us her fury. With this wet season, most of you know it has left almost all of Northern California blown out and too high to fish. With more coming down, it doesn't look like the Sac Valley will clear up anytime soon. However, there has been a glimmer of hope, which I will talk about shortly. I will have to say, I am super excited and really looking forward to our spring to fall fishing with all the snow we have in the mountains. What this awesome snow pack means is a longer spring as well as a great summer and fall fishing with lots of cold water for the fish to thrive and for us to play. Even though things do not look so great right now, come late spring, summer and fall, its going to be great. So hang in there. If you are looking to get out now...........here ya go...............
Fishing Report: Well this one is pretty easy, all rivers are blown and unfishable except for one.........
Trinity River: The Trinity has been the saving grace for any guide permitted on this river, and it has been fishing pretty darn good considering it is the only wadable/fishable river in Nor Cal. Meaning its been a bit more crowded than normal. Right now she is a bit high as well as brown, but with a big break in the rain just around the corner, this will be the place to be for the next month, maybe even until the beginning of April. The fishing has been consistent with some days being down right epic. We have been seeing some big fish hooked and landed, some reaching 30"+ and up to 15lbs, however, the average fish has been 24-28"/4-8lbs and full of chrome bright spunk. The big thing this year has been being up there and actually fishing as lots of reports have read its slow to even don't go. But if you are up there and put in your time you will be greatly rewarded. The Trinity should fish good for the remainder of this month as well into mid-March, and if the flows stay steady, you will want to be there. Also, if you love to swing like me, now's the time. Some of my best days swinging with or without clients has been in late Feb to mid March. Oh did I forget to mention the dry fly fishing, oh yes, dry fly fishing for steelhead and browns during this time can be off the chart. So if you are itching to get out, the Trinity has the cure for you, and we still have some available dates if you are looking to book a trip.
"Be the Report, don't Believe the Report"
Trinity Dates: Feb 20,21,22 March 6,7,8,9,27,28,29,30,31 More dates available upon request
If you are looking to book spring dates in the Sac Valley, start looking at reserving them now. Come late March to early April, the Feather will be fishable once again. Personally I think it will be slightly earlier, but by April 1st she will be ready to go. If you have fished the Feather in the spring, then you know how awesome this fishery is as well as how hot these steelhead are. Pound for Pound hardest fighting steelhead you will hook into next to fishing a coastal river. So if you are looking to book April and May, reserve them now, cuz as soon as these Sac Valley Rivers become fishable again, available dates will be hard to come by. Spring dates are already filling up.
Lastly for anyone interested in joining me in Baja in late July for Dorado, Yellowfin, Wahoo and many more, please contact me and I'll send you the details.
Hope you all enjoyed the report, wish I had more to report on. Hopefully, I will have more on the next one. Thank you and looking forward to hearing from you

Middle Fork Feather River Fly Fishing Report
Jon Baiocchi reports on 3.24.19
Middle Fork Feather River:
Last season on the MFFR was the best in a long time, and with an abundance of water again, look for conditions to be even better. Trout migrate heavily in this river. During the higher flows of spring, bigger fish will be spread out in the upper watershed. Streamer tactics often entice the 18-24” fish, but you’ll have to work hard for them. As the flows drop most trout will go with the flow and head downstream to the canyons, especially when water temperatures have spiked upwards, but then the bass and carp games reveal themselves with a different and unique option. Spring and fall on the MFFR offer something that most rivers in California can’t – Solitude, especially if an angler is willing to hike away from the major access areas.
The Middle Fork Feather River is managed by the US Forest Service as stated in the Wild & Scenic Rivers Act by Congress in 1967. The people own the river, and there is no private water. Being a navigable river, any person that is fishing, hiking, or recreating can move up and down the river as long as they have entered on public land, or by a Cal Trans easement, and staying within the high water mark. If you’re hiring a guide for the MFFR, make sure they have proof of a US Forest Service Special Use Permit to commercially operate there. I look forward to sharing my decade’s long experience with fly anglers new to the Middle Fork Feather River.

Feather River Fly Fishing Report
Capt. Hogan Brown reports on 1.17.19
Feather River through town – The feather river through the town of Oroville above the highway 70 bridge opened up Jan 1 and from what I hear is fishing really well. The fall steelhead run on the feather was as good as we have seen and the upper stretches above the highway 20 bridge seem to be pretty full with fish. Good friends have been getting out and hooking multiple fish each session. Beads, caddis pupa, and mayfly nymphs have been best. March will be here before we know it and Spring Swing time will be here so do not fret.

Northern Sierra Fly Fishing Report
Jon Baiocchi reports on 10.25.18
Blazing fall colors and wild trout fattening up for winter, it just doesn't get any better. The weather has been fantastic in the high country with warm days and cold nights.
Tumblr media
The feeding schedule for trout has changed and an angler will want to fish during the warmest time of the day, or when water temperatures rise where both bugs and trout become more active. Fishing pressure is light, and solitude is easy to find.
Tumblr media
Lake Davis - water temps are now down to 51 and the Fall bite is full steam ahead. The Northern end of lake is where it's at. You'll want to move around and cover water. Best action has been making presentations while stripping in 8 to 25 feet of water, 3 feet down. Brown and olive buggers, plus some minnows patterns is all you need. There are a few fish in the skinny shallows and I expect more to be in there in the weeks to come.
Tumblr media
North Fork Yuba River - don't even get on water until noon, wait for water temps to climb to 51 degrees. Dry dropper rigs have been great! Orange Stimis with a bwo nymph hanging off the back has been very effective. Hatches include bwo mayflies, October caddis, and smaller caddis. Fishing pressure is light.
Tumblr media
Middle Fork Feather River - same conditions as the North Fork Yuba River, except fishing pressure is non existent. Concentrate your efforts downstream of the Two Rivers access. Red copper John's have been hot, and orange Stimis as well. Good hatches from to 2 to 4pm, bwo, and lots of different size caddis. I'm done guiding the Northern Sierra and will be on the Lower Yuba River full time. Hit me up if you want to learn about the river, or a private tour that will teach you everything from access areas, rigging, flies, entomology, and one on one guiding. 530.228.0487/[email protected] Jon Baiocchi 407 Gracie Rd Nevada City, Ca 95959 530 228 0487 http://www.baiocchistroutfitters.com

Central Valley Fly Fishing Report
Capt. Chuck Ragan reports on 10.25.18
It’s a great time of year to be on the water. Steelhead fishing in the Feather and Yuba River has been productive. Dry fly fishing in the Yuba as well has been giving a good amount of shots just as swinging steamers in deeper runs and foothill fall bass is starting to get exciting.
Tumblr media
If trout, bass or steelhead aren’t what you’re looking for, there are fewer numbers than summer fishing but a good chance at some extremely solid striped bass on the fly in our Northern California and Central Valley Rivers.
Tumblr media
If you’re on the books, you’re in for a treat and we’ll see you soon.  If not don’t hesitate to strike while the iron’s hot.  CR

Yuba Striper Fly Fishing Report
Capt. Chuck Regan reports on 10.11.18
Fall Fishing for resident Striper in some of our Northern California rivers (Sacramento, Feather, and Yuba Rivers) continues to prove it’s worth and has been leaving everyone thrilled and hungry for more.
Tumblr media
Decent to great numbers with a few shots for a beast constantly keep us on point and focused.  The shift in weather this past weekend from the front that moved through slowed the bite a bit but yesterday seemed to prove that the fish have their feed bags back on.  Don’t miss a chance to get on the boat this fall for Striped Bass on the fly!

Sacramento, Yuba, Feather Striper Fly Fishing
Chuck Regan reports on 7.27.18
The Sacramento, Feather and Yuba Rivers are producing great results for summer striper fishing on the fly while the Lower Yuba has been really been shaping up for some amazing foothill trout and steelhead fishing.  The past months have given us some amazing visual eats in shallow clear water by healthy striper.  We're also beginning to see salmon in the river and with them some beautiful Central Valley Steelhead.
Tumblr media
Nymphing Rubber Legs and Mayfly nymphs have been highly successful but with the willows and grass swarmed with grasshoppers, fishing like patterns close to the bank is also a solid approach. Get in touch at [email protected] for more info, tips or to check availability for drift boat or jet boat trips on The Yuba, Feather or Sacramento Rivers.
Fair winds and tight lines,

Lower Feather Fly Fishing Report
11.23.2017
The Lower Feather has been fishing pretty well as of late. The Low flow section below the dam has a pretty solid number of salmon on redds. There have been a number of adult steelhead and half pounders caught up here. As always when fishing around redds be very careful and watch where you step. Swinging egg sucking leaches and nymphing will find you fish.

Lower Sac and Feather River Fly Fishing Report
Hogan Brown reports on 9.15.2017
Been spending a few days here and there striper fishing on the Lower Sac, Swinging some flies on the upper feather, and conventional salmon fishing for the table...Striper fishing has been good as fall feels like it is finally here and the temperatures are cooling down and the days are getting shorter. We have been getting some nice fish in the 10-15lb range that were not around in the summer (which I think these are the perfect size fish) as well as a few of the big trophy fish. Biggest issue is that the salmon on the Sac are not showing up and these fish usually push the bigger stripers in a more consistent way to the banks and into the feeding lanes. So we have still been getting big fish but the "fall bonanza" where the big fish are around ALOT is a bit slow...that said fishing is good and we have nothing to complain about.
I personally fished a few days on my own on the Feather up through the low flow on the feather swinging some flies on my lighter switch rods and have stuck a few fish but nothing huge or that I would call a true "adult" fish yet. Also been dragging some row and yarn on the feather for some king salmon. At $25 a pound for wild caught salmon and two boys that plow through protein on a daily basis I am trying to fill the fridge this year. Most of the fish are still "BBQ" quality fish and will be for a few weeks when they began to turn to "smoker" quality fish.

Nor Cal Fly Fishing Report
Nor Cal Fly Guides Reports on 6.25.2017
Well this report comes to you a bit late, its not because of the great weather we have been having, but the great fishing we are having, but its better late then never. With the longest spring we have seen in years, getting out on local water has been a bit tough. Over the past few months almost all of my trips have been on the Lower Sac with a few on Putah. The Lower Sac has been fishing great whether it was at 5k,10k or 30k cfs, and Putah, well its Putah. With our local waters finally at fishable flows, its nice to be fishing close to home and on some good to great fishing. Summer is going to be good and our Fall should be great. So enough talking from me lets get onto the report.
American:
Flows: 6400
Clarity: Clear
Fishing: Good to Great
The AR has been a sight for long driving eyes as its been fishing great for both shad and stripers. Most of the shad fishing has been up top from Rosemore up, as well as the crowds. But if you can get out early, you will miss the crowds and be off before it gets to hot. Also there are some huge stripers cruising up top but getting them to eat is another story. My striper trips have been from Sunrise down for full days, and Gristmil down for half days, and boy has it been good. We are seeing a ton of shakers, and in the mix are plenty of 2-5lbers. The big fish unfortunately are stuffed with shad right now, but those smaller fish will keep you busy. We are having some good top water action too if you can get on early enough, and plenty of fish to go around whether a full or half day, 1 or 2 anglers. As the shad start leaving the river, the striper fishing will only get better. Best way to fish for stripers is on early off early, get your fix and beat the heat. No better time than now and the next few months. Time to get your 8wt bent.
Feather:
Flows: Low flow 2300, Total Flow 2500
Clarity: Clear
Fishing: Good to Great
Steelhead, striper and shad oh my, we have been having a few trifectas over the past 2 weeks, and its only getting better. Steelhead are thoughout the river system, but the further up you go the better it gets. Typically we are the only boat/anglers on the water, and the lack of fishing pressure truly shows, hitting a dozen steelhead ranging 14-20" is pretty easy right now, so hooking more is definitely likely. There are some bigger fish in the system as well, some pushing 8lbs, good luck landing these toads. On top of the steelhead fishing, we are even sticking a few stripers when targeted and a good number of shad too, it is the place to be right now. The river has definitely changed with the high water, and with it being 2300cfs in low flow, wade carefully. Fall is going to be sweet on this river and very busy, so as I always say, if you are looking to book a trip on the Feather, I highly recommend booking well in advance. "EGG BITE" will be here sooner than you think.
Nymphing has been the main game for steelhead, but getting them on the swing has been fun as well.
Yuba
Flows: 3700
Clarity: Perfect
Fishing: Fair to good
The Yuba is slowly coming back into shape, and is getting better every time I float it. As I have stated in past reports its the Newba and will take some anglers a bit of time to get use to how it looks, fishes and feels, but in due time, she will give it up. Not a lot of bug activity right now, but tell that to the fish. We are getting fish all throughout the water column, from on top to dredging deep, seems like the fish know what they want, "A well placed and drifter fly". My last trip on it we floated only a few (2) hours with clients and ended up hooking 6 fish, one being a 20" toad, but came unbottoned at the boat. When the flows get lower, this will be one sweet river. Until then, wade carefully as the river has changed a ton, and its not as shallow as before. With fall looming just around the corner if you are looking to book the "Egg Bite" on the Yuba, look to book sooner than later.
Nymphing is the main game, but throwing big bugs and swinging has produced a few fish as well.
Lower Sac
Flows: 10K
Clarity: Milky Green
Fishing: Good to Great depending on the day
The Lower Sac has kept every guide in Nor Cal including myself, in business and busy this year as it has been the only fishable water up to only a few weeks ago. Sometimes guiding it at 25-30k was needed, but now that its back down to 10k and its fishing extremely well. Big fish and a lot of fish will keep you busy throughout the day and some of the best fishing is just around the corner. The hotter the weather, the better it gets, so if you can bare the 100+ deg temps, you can plan on hooking a ton of fish. As you may know, the river is closed from Hwy 44 to the dam, and opens back up Aug 1st. This is great for the spring run kings, as well as the local trout up there, giving them all a break from the crazy, above normal pressure they have been seeing. Come Aug 1st if you are not on the water those first few weeks you are truly missing out. I highly recommending booking a day, 2 or even 3 during these first few weeks to experience the best fishing that you will ever have. Soon after fall will be here, and you know what that means, "EGG BITE", need I say more.
Nymphing is the way to go right now.
This is where I have been spending all of my time as of late, and will continue to do so. The fishing is not red hot, but its darn good, and is only getting better on a daily basis. If you are looking to finally wet a line and get bent, no better time than now.
If you are thinking that you want to wait till Fall, please dont wait till the last minute to book your fall trip, this year is going to be a busy one, probably the busiest yet, so book now while prime dates are available.

Redding Area and Sierra Foothills Fly Fishing Report
Brian Clemens reports on 4.27.17
Hello Everyone, WOW, what a start to the 2017 fishing season. All we can say is water, water, and more water. Oh, and more water to come. Hopefully the rainy season is behind us, and only good fishing to come.
This year has been a bit challenging, especially on local water. The opener on the American was the worst in years, the Feather was brown due to the damage to the dam, the Yuba was high and brown as well, everything was high and brown, even the Lower Sac. The only fishable water that kept me busy was the Trinity, but even that is now flowing too high. So you may be asking, “Is there anything fishable right now?” and the answer is, “Yes, and thats soon to come.” For those that typically book fall/winter trips, I would highly recommend booking well in advance, the sooner the better. This fall is going to be one to remember, and I hope to be able to experience it with you. With the amount of water that we have, with plenty more to come, we will have plenty of water for fall fishing, and the water temps are going to be very favorable for the fish. Once all these rivers come into shape, available dates will be hard to come by. We are already booking fall trips, so now is the time to get your dates for the fall/winter season.
So lets talk current fishing report:
American: Current flows are 15k, water clarity is really good. The only fishing to be had right now are for stripers. You are going to work for a handful of fish, but this time of year is when you will find the bigger fish. So if you want to hook that 10-15 pounder now is the time. Also, we should start seeing shad in the next few weeks, which will bring in even more stripers. As far as steelhead, don’t even bother, think fall for these chrome domes, mid to late October before the upper closure can be a ton of fun. For now think stripers, and in a few weeks shad. Feather: DONT BOTHER!!!!! Flows are 35k, a bit to high to fish effectively. Start looking towards the fall for your trips here. Advanced booking highly recommended. October and November is prime time. Late Sept early October, pre-egg bite/pre-spawn can be epic.
Yuba: The clarity is absolutely perfect, and I hope the flows come down to fishable levels soon. As soon as it hits 3-4k, Ill be out there working it hard. Current flows are 7500cfs and very slowly dropping. Once the flows drop to fishable levels, its going to be interesting. I scouted it about a month back and I am super excited in what I saw. A very braided river, and its definitely a NEW River, and one will have to re-learn it all over again. Don’t know how soon it will be fishable, Im guessing July, but who knows. What I do know is if you are looking to fish it this in the fall, I highly recommend advance booking. I love fishing it mid Sept to mid Oct before the crowds, pre-egg bite/pre-spawn.
Trinity: Current flows 11k, definitely not fishable and wont be for a long time. Ill start back on this river come mid/late August, and fish it hard till late March early April. Im already booking fall/winter trips, and if you are looking to do the same, start booking now. If you like to swing like me, late August to late October is prime time for swinging. Lot of swinging with muddlers and skaters during that time of year and a good amount of action to boot. If you want to learn how to swing, I can not think of a better, more beautiful place than the Trinity in the fall. Hot fish eating swung flies throughout the day, while seeing lots of wildlife as well as fall colors, no bobbers needed. This river is becoming more popular every year for my clients, and finding available dates is becoming harder to find. So if you are looking to book a trip or two on the Trinity between August and April, advance booking is extremely recommended. Lower Sac: I have done a few trips on the Lower Sac over the past few weeks. All the trips have been at 20k, 25k and 30k, personally, not my style of fishing, it just wasn't fun for us (clients and myself). Several trips were postponed mostly due to myself not wanting to subject my clients to those fishing conditions, and they also agreed with me. Was it fishable, yes, were we hooking a good number of fish, yes, however, not much fishable water. Where there was, typically 4-8 boats working the same float (about 100yrds long), most fishing was done with beads and above Bonneyview. Also we were doing a double float from Posse to Bonney and the water at the time was 18-20" of viz in brownish water. It just wasn't the experience I wanted to give me clients, and not an experience they personally wanted. However, there is good news for the very near future. Come 5/1 flows will be at 9k and dropping slowly to 7k by 5/3. If you know the Lower Sac and have fished it this time of you, you know that its prime time both flows and timing. So if you are looking to get out and wet a line, I highly recommend booking your trip on the Lower Sac starting 5/1. There you have it folks, your current fishing report. Wish I had more to report, but with all the water coming down, its hard to find good fishable water to take clients out on. But in just a week, the Lower Sac will be ready for you, and hopefully the fishing will get better over the next few weeks. As stated earlier, if you typically book fall/winter trips with me on any river system, I highly recommend booking well in advance. With how things are and have been over the past few months, everyone will be itching to get out this fall/winter, and dates will be hard to come by. Book now - fun later!!!! Available Dates: May 3,4,5,6,8,10,11,14,15,20-25,29-31 Please contact me for more available dates in 2017/2018 Available Trinity Dates: August-Sept 30,31,1,2,5,6 Sept11,12,13,14,22,23,26 October10,11,12,14,15,16,17,18,19,20 November14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22 December15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23 Please contact me for more available dates in 2017/2018
Lastly, I still have a few spots available for my July 24th-28th hosted trip to Baja, through Baja Pirates. The cost for 5 days, 4 nights, 3 days fishing is $1100. If you are interested in more info about this hosted trip, please contact me and I’ll send you all the info needed for booking a spot. Hope you enjoyed the report. Some good fishing just around the corner, can’t wait to see what the rest of the season holds. Hope to see you on the water soon. Sacramento Valley Fly Fishing Report
Hogan Brown reports on 3.2.17
Fishing has been tough but if you get out and look and the weather cooperates you can find some fishable water. For us north staters all the rivers are toast as most will report. I have heard that the Trinity and coast maybe opening up a bit but the Feather, Sac, Yuba are all pumping...I have been exploring our local bass lakes...Black Butte, East Park Reservoir, and Oroville After Bay. Fishing can be good but it can also be REALLY tough. The difference is usually the weather. A few days of stable weather and the bite opens up, pressure fronts and/or storms start moving through and things get tight. There is reaction bait type fishing and jig type fishing on any given days as well as float and fly fishing available so lots of options for the angler that can time the weather right.

Feather River Fly Fishing
Hogan Brown reports on 2.23.2017
All the rivers are still high and raging .... I have been getting out on the Oroville Afterbay for spotted bass and if the weather and conditions are timed right fishing can be decent. March and April are going to be reservoir and lake bass fishing I think for me for the most part. Oroville Afterbay, Clear Lake, Black Butte, Scotts Flat...smallies, spots, and largemouth ... Trying to time my days to stable weather, no fronts moving in, and warmer temps. Hopefully by Mid April I will be able to get out striper fishing on the Sac and Feather.

Lower Yuba & Lower Sac Fly Fishing Report
Hogan Brown Reports on 1.12.17
So, if you have read any of the fishing reports you are probably already under the realization that most everything is blown out…That amount of water that has come down the Lower Yuba and Lower Sacramento is incredible. Outside of Chico the Sac got up to 115,000cfs and the Yuba got up to 81,000cfs (as of 9 Jan)…those are river channel changing flows. New runs, riffles, and even paths of the river will most likely result in addition to fish displacement, complete scouring of the river bottom resulting in the wiping out of insect populations, bank habitat, willows…etc.
Here are a few reports from what I have heard or seen but for the most part I am tying flies, playing guitar, and catching up on movies/shows in my free time. The Lower Yuba River was fishable for a few days at most, but with all the rain there has been massive amounts of water coming down the Lower Yuba, lows reached over 80,000cfs this last week. Who knows when the river will be fishable again... My best guess is it will take a good month for flows to drop to anywhere near fishable and then any storm will blow the river out again so who knows consistent flows may not come until May/June. No matter when it is going to be a completely different river when the flows do drop.  The Lower Sacramento Riverwas kicked back up to 15,000cfs only after being down around 5500cfs for only a week at most and then the rain came, and flows are now up over 21,000cfs out of Keswick with flooding throughout the water shed down river. The Sac outside of Chico reached over 100,000cfs cresting at about 115,000cfs on Jan 10th. Flows over 20,000cfs out of Keswik are not unfishable but I am not sure what the clarity coming out of Shasta is. I can't imagine it is very clear. Not sure when flows will clear and drop Butte Creek is blown out and will need a week or so of dry weather to be fishable again. May get a week or two of fishing in before it closes Feb 15 Feather River, I have not heard any reports sense the upper stretch above Hwy 70 opened Jan 1 but I did drive over the river this afternoon (Jan 7) and the river was starting to color up meaning that Lake Oroville was getting muddy.
