It was dedicated by her to revolutionary Leon Trotsky.⁣ ⁣ Trotsky was born in 1879 in Ukraine, which was then part of the Russian Empire. When he was 19 he was arrested for revolutionary activities and exiled to Siberia. 🥶 He spent four years there, but in four years I guess he'd seen all that was worth seeing, because in 1902 he escaped and went to London.⁣ 🇬🇧 ⁣ Instead of enjoying the nightlife of London, Trotsky kept trying to be a revolutionary. He helped organize the Russian Revolution of 1905, and wound up being exiled to Siberia again.⁣🥶 ⁣ He remembered how to get out though, and he spent the next 10 years in Western Europe and the USA. The next time he wanted to get involved in a revolution, he waited until it was underway. He played a key role in the Russian Revolution of 1917, and he became a prominent figure in the new government of the USSR under Vladimir Lenin. ⁣ ⁣ Lenin died in 1924 and was succeeded by Stalin. Stalin and Trotsky didn't get along so well, so Trotsky decided it best to leave, voluntarily this time. ⁣ ⁣ He wasn't really wanted in other countries though, until Frida's husband, Diego Garcia arranged for him to be given asylum in Mexico. Frida met Trotsky and his wife when they arrived in January 1937, and gave them use of her Blue House in Coyoaca.⁣ ⁣ The Garcias and the Trotskys spent a lot of time together. Frida and Leon more than the others. In the summer of 1937 they began a secret love affair. Frida dedicated this painting to Leon in November of that year, the note in her hand saying, "With all my love."⁣❤️ ⁣ Eventually Frida tired of the affair, and the Trotskys left the Blue House in 1939. At his wife's request, Trotsky left the painting behind.⁣ ⁣ In August 1940, one of Stalin's agents attacked Trotsky with an ice pick.🧊🪓 Not a typical instrument found in Mexico in the summer, but it did the job. Trotsky hung on for another day, his last words being, "I will not survive this attack."
