Well, you can always change your mind... After much more experimenting I realized that my photos taken at a small aperture became waaay oversharpened with my selected settings. The final solution was to create a hybrid setting out of everything I like. I have still not touched the highlight, shadow, color chrome or wb shift settings and this works with all the original film simulations, so in my mind I’m still using the defaults. Final settings: White balance: 5600K Sharpening: -2 Noise reduction: -2 Film simulation: Any Grain: None Highlight: 0 Shadow: 0 Color chrome: Off WB Shift: None The result is extremely film like, but not an emulation of a specific film, but rather an optimized mix. You can surely add some grain if you like and any setting will work fine. I often need a clean look, so I opted to have it off as default. This shot was taken with the above settings using classic chrome as film simulation. It’s rather amazing what you can accomplish with only minor adjustments! I’ve done a good amount of thinking the last couple of days, trying to work out what I like and dislike with my old photos. A big part of this was to analyze my old raw editing workflow that I used with my Nikons. A bit simplified, it looked like this: 1. Correct any exposure mistakes 2. Apply an existing color profile 3. Fix white balance if needed 4. Apply sharpening Thinking about this, I realized that you don’t really have to do much to get incredible results from a Fujifilm X camera! For my style, the optimal setting seem to be setting dynamic range to 100, sharpening to +1 and noise reduction to -4. With these settings and a film simulation matching the current weather and location, everything suddenly works out of the box. Here’s an important lesson: I initially found the default settings boring because I failed to select the most appropriate simulation for the job. Also I did not realize that boring and pale can often be a good thing as it forces the viewer to actually look at the photo, not the colors! That said, I now fully realize the most probably slightly insane amount of work Fujifilm have put into the development of their simulations. There is actually no real need to create custom simulations to make your photos look great, but if you want to tune them more to your liking the possibilities are only limited by your imagination... This turned out to be quite a love letter to Fujifilm, but they deserve it. I no longer care about tech specs and the latest gear. As long as my X-T3 works, I’ll keep on using it! Oh, I almost forgot. The photo was taken today using the above settings with PRO Neg. Hi and auto white balance.
