Reuben Wilson
Love Bug listen here

(English / Español / Italiano)
An essential reference in the history of funk and the Hammond B-3 organ, Reuben Wilson (1935-2023) was one of the many soul jazz organists to emerge in the late 1960s, fortunate enough to be among the few to be signed to Blue Note Records. At a time when the label was going in a less purist direction, none of his works for the label achieved a strong following at the time, but were rediscovered much later by a new generation of fans who did not disdain their commercial licenses to become instant cult objects among fans of the genre. Wilson's music, a blend of jazz, pop, jazz fusion and funk, inspired the likes of Sly Stone and George Clinton, and through the work of Acid Jazz label artists, Gilles Peterson and contemporary DJ samples, continues to exert a profound influence on the music scene.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

1997 London Playlist
Back with some dance goodies from '97 that came from the world's most musically vibrant city, London, where all sorts of electronic genres were able to flourish quite unlike anywhere else in the world at the time. This week I added a deep breakbeat banger to the Spotify version of this playlist by a duo called Drum Club, who in '92 released their original version of "U Make Me Feel So Good" on dance legend William Orbit's pioneering progressive house label, Guerilla. Five years later, though, Drum Club's own Lol Hammond, aka Girl Eats Boy, remixed the song for a re-release on another UK progressive house label called Jackpot too, which gave us this beaut that laid its drum breaks over a super soothingly satisfying backdrop of lush strings and soft, subtle horn, as the sampled vocal from the original version made its grand return 😌. Currently unjustifiably sitting at less than 1,000 plays.
The Drum Club - "You Make Me Feel So Good (Girl Eats Boy mix)"
And then for the YouTube update, I added that one, plus another couple Guerilla remixes that can't be found on Spotify too, including a trance take on West London group React 2 Rhythm's 1991 song, "Intoxication," that was done by the legendary duo of John Digweed & Nick Muir, aka Bedrock, that's currently only sitting at 3.6K+ plays; and a progressive house mix of UK duo Fuzzy Logic's 1992 tune, "Obsession," that was done by the trio of Shango and Danny Howells, which is pushing towards 4.3K plays. "Intoxication" has this lovely bed of colliding and stringy synths that Bedrock drop a bunch of bleepy and old school knob-twiddling acid on top of, and then "Obsession" is one of those tunes that's good for slotting into the middle of a mix to maintain a steady vibe before you really start to ramp up to a mesmerizing climax. It lingers for a bit, but after its breakdown, it adds some nice string pads to complete the whole thing. Vocalist Erire dips into some gravelly passion and some aquatic organ work is mixed in too 👍.
React 2 Rhythm - "Intoxication (Nick Muir & John Digweed's Bedrock mix)" Fuzzy Logic - "Obsession (Shango & Danny Howells' Illogical Infactuation mix)"
And this playlist is also on YouTube Music.
So, three new tracks added in total this week, from three separate dance genres, all of which were remixes of songs that were originally released on the great Guerilla label. Spotify version of the playlist is now at 14 songs that clock in at 91 minutes, but over on YouTube, we're now at 25 songs that clock in at 173 minutes. So if you want a whole lot more of that dope 1997 London underground stuff, check out the YouTube playlist!
And here's the list of comps and mixes that I've used so far to put this playlist together:
Goth's Undead (1997, Cleopatra Records) 00 : 50 (1997, Soma Quality Recordings) Monsieur Dimitri's De-Luxe House of Funk by Dimitri From Paris (1997, DMC Publishing Ltd.) Jackpot Presents Guerilla by Phil Perry & Danny Howells (1997, Jackpot) Skampler (2001, Skam) Soma Quality Recordings - Volume 4 (1997, Soma Quality Recordings) Club H Vol.2 by Harry the Bastard (2000, Statra Recordings) Hi:Fidelity Lounge - Volume One: Subterranean Soundtracks (1999, Guidance Recordings) Eclectic Electric (2000, eMusic) Spundae Presents Interpretations by Jerry Bonham (1998, Spundae) DJ-Kicks: by Kid Loco (1999, !K7) 4am Eternal (A Truly Twisted Post-Club Chill-Out Selection) by Osymyso (2000, Mixmag) Amberdelic Space II: Angel of Ecstasy (1997, Dressed to Kill) Alt. Frequencies Presents Disco Moonlight (1997, Worm Interface) Essential Selection, Vol. One by Fatboy Slim & Paul Oakenfold (2000, London Records 90) E=wMC2000: The Equation For Quantum Groove Theory (2000, eMusic) A Jedi's Night Out by Tom Middleton (1999. DMC / Mixer) Architecture Volume 2 by Terry Francis (1998, Pagan Records)
And here's some links to more 90s London playlists too:
1992: YouTube / YouTube Music 1994: YouTube / YouTube Music 1995: YouTube / YouTube Music 1996: Spotify / YouTube / YouTube Music 1998: Spotify / YouTube / YouTube Music 1999: YouTube / YouTube Music
Breakbeat update next week!

Hammond B3 Organ Cistern
Gabrielle Calvocoressi (1974- ), Published 2018 (as far as I can tell)
The days I don’t want to kill myself are extraordinary. Deep bass. All the people in the streets waiting for their high fives and leaping, I mean leaping, when they see me. I am the sun-filled god of love. Or at least an optimistic under-secretary. There should be a word for it. The days you wake up and do not want to slit your throat. Money in the bank. Enough for an iced green tea every weekday and Saturday and Sunday! It’s like being in the armpit of a Hammond B3 organ. Just reeks of gratitude and funk. The funk of ages. I am not going to ruin my love’s life today. It’s like the time I said yes to gray sneakers but then the salesman said Wait. And there, out of the back room, like the bakery’s first biscuits: bright-blue kicks. Iridescent. Like a scarab! Oh, who am I kidding, it was nothing like a scarab! It was like bright. blue. fucking. sneakers! I did not want to die that day. Oh, my God. Why don’t we talk about it? How good it feels. And if you don’t know then you’re lucky but also you poor thing. Bring the band out on the stoop. Let the whole neighborhood hear. Come on, Everybody. Say it with me nice and slow no pills no cliff no brains onthe floor Bring the bass back. no rope no hose not today, Satan. Every day I wake up with my good fortune and news of my demise. Don’t keep it from me. Why don’t we have a name for it? Bring the bass back. Bring the band out on the stoop. Hallelujah!

AllMusic Staff Pick Various Artists More Original Raw Soul
Taken from the "vaults" of Hotpie & Candy Records, More Original Raw Soul appears to be a just-uncovered archival find of rare '70s uncut James Brown-style funk. The telltale fat bass and porno wah-wah guitar, augmented by golden horn sections and gritty Hammond organ vamps, are straight out of the era of denim suits and wide lapels.

Traveling record shop haul.

West Coast OGs are not a common thing in my part of the World, so when I see the names of Shelly Manne, Red Mitchell, Jimmy Giuffre, Bob Cooper on the cover I don’t think twice. Didn’t know these albums, but all the hopes were fulfilled at the first listen.
Jimmy Smith is something else. Organ player associated with soul jazz, which I’m not a biggest fan, but his records for Blue Note (this record label is always a quality sign when it comes to their classic years) are said to be more ambitious than his later albums. I’ve decided to give him a try. I’m gobsmacked by the level of his inventivness and virtuosity on his instrument (Hammond organ). It was recorded in 1956 and you may hear the proto funk, proto rock and even proto trip-hop! The record starts like it would be a Portishead album thanks to sound acrobatics. Volume knob on organ? Guitar maybe? Don’t know. Wild stuff💥

Z.O.U “Z.O.U” 1975 France Prog Rock
full youtube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=naAmR-l7LV0&ab_channel=AlexandrMarkevich
French band from the early 70s, formed by ex-member of Zoo. Z.O.U means Zön Orchestra Unlimited. This band acquired a kind of "mythical" status amongst Magma fans, when 3 of its members joined Magma in the late 1970s,but there is not Magma traces here, though there are indeed R.I.O. traces and some early YEZDA URFA twists on side B.....~ Somehow we missed this rather famous French band (full name: Zon Orchestra Unlimited), which, according to rumors, is finally going to be re-released by Musea on CD. Apparently, its long acquisition on vinyl was caused by the fact that this disc was released at the "major" Polydor. A new project from one of the founders of Zoo - the Hervé brothers - with vocalist Maria Popkievich, who continues their research in the field of jazz rock. Later, most of the team joined the late line-up of "Magma", but the music here is not at all zero-like, but very pleasant. A blend of soul, funk, progressive, and jazz with Maria's clingy vocals and catchy, pulsating piano chords. A kind of more mainstream Cos with a lot of soul, but good arrangements and a rather non-standard approach to the material distinguish them from the host of similar rock records. In addition to the piano, there is a very nice "Hammond" organ and electric guitar, although things are rather song-oriented. The 12-minute epic is divided into several vocal fragments and is not as progressive as one might think, although some rhythmic breaks can be found there. Recommended!....~ Credits Bass Guitar, Vocals – Michel Hervé Directed By [Direction Artistique] – Claude Dejacques Drums – Stéphan Hervé* Engineer – Didier Périer Engineer [Assistant] – Franck Redlich* Guitar, Vocals – Joël Hervé Keyboards, Xylophone, Synthesizer [Synthorchestra], Guitar, Vocals – André Hervé Vocals – Maria Popkiewicz Written-By – André Hervé (tracks: A1 to A3, B1a to B2), Maria Popkiewicz (tracks: A2, A3, B1a to B2), James Seals/Dash Crofts* (tracks: A4) Tracklist I Love You 4:50 She's A Girl 2:58 Pick Up Pull 3:58 Humming Bird 4:20 Puzzle Head (12:38) One Minute Wonders Hope Chant "Where" Retrospective Requiem Ad Infinitum Bouggy Zouggy (Rétro Rock) 2:50

Big Boss Man - Bossin' Around - at long last, a new album from this groovy organ quartet
Big Boss Man have been fusing 60s R’n’B, Soul, Latin, Funk and Bongo-Hammond-Fuzz since ’98. They’ve released four studio albums, and eight 7” singles, and have appeared on countless compilations. The quartet’s explosive live shows are legendary, and they’ve been blasting stages since their earlier days in The Loafers, Skooby and Espadrille, amongst a few others. ‘Bossin’ Around’ has been simmering for some time! Ten years since their last studio album, and four 7” singles in-between, these twelve tracks are ready to unleash. With guests providing trumpet, flute, saxophones and trombones, Big Boss Man have fused a mix of Soul-fuelled 60s R’n’B, Hammond Jazz, Latin and Mod Funk, and have almost gone back to their roots too! Big Boss Man continue to make what the people call ‘proper’ music. Line Up: Nasser Bouzida - Hammond, Percussion. Trevor Harding - Guitar. Badger Burgess - Bass Guitar. Desmond Rogers - Drums.

The Vaniers Channel Their Love of Footy Anthems on Upbeat Rock Single “Painted Town”
Toronto rock trio The Vaniers are diving into their love of early 2000’s post-Britpop, acid funk, and electronica on new single, “Painted Town.”
Inspired by the FIFA footy anthems they grew up listening to, the song is built around a pulsating piano line performed on a Hammond Cadet organ that bassist/vocalist Diego Paz had sitting in his basement.
“Painted Town” is a pump up song - it’s meant to get you stoked and ready for whatever’s around the corner. At the same time, there’s a strong sense of nostalgia here for us, going back to music from our childhood that unknowingly would impact us as musicians much later on in life. You could say that this song was written for our ten year old selves, sitting in front of the TV with the volume way up. – guitarist Alex Iacobellis
Known for delivering scorching live performances and dazzling crowds, The Vaniers have become a staple in the Toronto music scene, celebrated for their high-octane shows and catchy tunes. The breakthrough for the band came in 2019, marked by the release of five singles and a tour across the Toronto circuit. Their debut EP, Who Are You To Say? hit the scene on March 19th, 2020. In 2021, The Vaniers collaborated with producer Nixon Boyd of Hollerado, recording their full-length LP titled All Together Now!, released on June 3rd, 2022. The album’s release was met with acclaim and celebrated with successive sold-out shows at Horseshoe Tavern the next night and Lee’s Palace the following month.
In 2023, The Vaniers started working towards their sophomore LP, to which they have released three singles from so far: “Faces,” “Charlie,” and “This Dog.” The full album is slated for a late 2024 release.

Ursula 1000 - Get Down With Us Tonight (Insect Queen Music)
8DPromo · Ursula 1000 - Get Down With Us Tonight (Insect Queen Music)
Ursula 1000's latest single, "Get Down With Us Tonight," is a funky, time-bending journey that seamlessly blends the best of the past and future. Released on Insect Queen Music, this two-track offering showcases Ursula's signature style of mixing retro vibes with modern electronic party starters. "Get Down With Us Tonight," is a showstopper, featuring chunky soul drums, growling Hammond organ riffs, and a rousing horn section that transports listeners back to the golden age of Stax Records. Ursula's incorporation of acid embellishments and cool male vocalese rhythms adds a futuristic twist, making it feel like the 1960s have collided with the 2040s on the dance floor. It's a sexy, irresistible invitation to let loose and do the timewarp again. And, for the DJs, Ursula has included an instrumental version of the track, allowing them to work their magic without the vocal bits. "Get Down With Us Tonight" is just the beginning of a string of new songs leading up to Ursula's forthcoming album, set to release later this year. As an artist who has consistently pushed boundaries and defied genres, Ursula 1000's latest offering is another shining example of how the producer crafts infectious, dance-floor-ready tunes that span decades and styles. So, put on your go-go boots and get ready to groove – Ursula 1000 is back, and he's bringing the party with him.
Jon Wesley (Insomniac) – “No one does it like Ursula 1000. Love the vibe and those big-ass, booming drums. Can't wait to play it.” Umbo (Timewarp Music) – “Loving it! BIG drums and a great funky feeling.” Kid Loco (Flor) – “Groovy, groovy and funky.” Sneak-E Pete (Blunted Funk) – “Total party rocker.
