Sly & The Family Stone - TV Appearances (Vol. 1 / Vol. 2)

Speaking of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, their recent, exquisitely sad "Hashtag" is a song that feels appropriate this week. Written for the late Guy Clark, it deals with the grief so many of us feel when a musical giant passes away — these singular characters that loom so large in our collective imagination. Sly Stone was one of those characters. At his height, he was positively superhuman, a Duke Ellington-level bandleader, a Miles Davis-level innovator, a James Brown-level performer. A guy who shared his dreams and visions on the biggest stages imaginable. Of course, those dreams eventually became nightmares of a sort ...

But that's probably for someone more erudite than me to unpack. Sly's death this week gives us the opportunity to just appreciate the man's work. I've been making my way through an immensely valuable collection of Family Stone television appearances available via the FunkIt channel. Stretching from 1968 to 1974, it's almost four hours worth of pure bliss, the band bringing the heat to Columbus, OH, London, Madison Square Garden and beyond. So long, Sly! Thank you.

My faves for G-spot stim have a wide head (especially with coronal ridge) and moderate to strong curve (which also gives great broad G-spot stim from the underside). I also get some G-spot stim from thick features like a flared head or strong swell.

This year's typically awe-inspiring Big Ears festival took place a few weeks back — and thankfully for the rest of us, there are a whole lot of excellent recordings. I went straight to the SML tape and I was not disappointed in the least. This remarkable collective (bassist Anna Butterss, synthesist Jeremiah Chiu, saxophonist Josh Johnson, percussionist Booker Stardrum, guitarist Gregory Uhlmann) come out swinging and keep up an impressive momentum throughout an almost hour-long set. Radical grooves abound. And radical grooves are what we need in 2025, right?

Butterss and Johnson were busy for Big Ears; the pair also joined Jeff Parker and Jay Bellerose for a rare ETA IVtet set, which of course sounds terrific on a FunkIt blog recording (you can also watch it on YouTube if that's what you're into). The IVtet explores some of the pieces from their recent/recommended The Way Out of Easy opus (dig Parker's "Lonely Woman" quote on "Freakdelic"), plays a great tune from Parker's Suite For Max Brown, and closes it all out with a ridiculously lovely rendition of everyone's favorite Bacharach/David song "This Guy's In Love With You." This guy suggests you drop everything and go listen right now.

well I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the best method would be throwing that shit away and getting a new toy. PVC is a porous material that is, in my opinion, deeply unsuitable for sex toys, especially ones meant to go inside your body.

Daniel Villareal - Saint Vincent Hotel Courtyard, New Orleans, Louisiana, April 27, 2023

Last week, I was lucky enough to catch the Denver kickoff date of Daniel Villareal's current U.S. tour — in fact I was seated so close to the Panamanian / Chicagoan drummer that I had to push my chair back to snap the above pic. After falling in love with his two recent International Anthem LPs, it was a blast to be totally immersed in Villareal's intoxicating rhythms, and his band was on fire throughout the set. They've got a few upcoming dates this month on the east coast; I highly recommend you check 'em out if you can.

If you can't, here's a little something to tide you over — a very nice FunkIt video of Villareal and co. (the same group he's touring with now, I believe) a few years back in the Big Easy (hey, it's Mardi Gras this week, right?). And if you know what's good for you, you'll also check out the recording of Jeff Parker and Makaya McCraven from the same night; the duo's closing rendition of Ornette's "Lonely Woman" is absolutely killer.
