July 8:
On this date in 1997, Primus released their fifth LP, The Brown Album.
On the very same day of the very same year, but in another place entirely, Smash Mouth dropped their debut album, Fush Yu Mang.
And,
Coincidentally, also on that day in that same year,, Emperor dropped their second album, Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk .

AOTD 2/7/2024 - Fush Yu Mang (Smash Mouth)
[All albums are rated subjectively based off my own experience] 5/10
Tumblr media
Honestly I was just bored listening through this, I have no real thoughts. Walkin' On the Sun and Padrino were good, but the rest of the album was just Samey. Every song felt very similar to the rest of the album - Fast Paced, Up Beat, Major Key Rock with a layer of Cheese applied to it (And not the Good cheese like Weird Al can do). I was bored and happy when it ended.
Heave-Ho was the worst. One of the more annoying songs I've heard, but it wasn't so bad as to physically repulse me.
EDIT: also their final song, Why Can't We Be Friends, a cover from War, has no right to exist. They milk the one good moment from that song for like a full minute after the track should end, and it's not even their own moment. Bruh
Edit: Trying to clense my pallet after this album, somehow I like 90's rock LESS after hearing it. What The Fuck did this thing Do to me?
Overall, listen to the two aformention tracks I liked and steer clear of this one. Not a great listen. So much so that I'm not bothering to do a full review and am writing this listening to The Bear by OK Goodnight to help clense my pallet.
Favorite Songs: Walk'n On The Sun, Padrino Least Favorite Songs: Heave-Ho, Pet Names, Push
Flo - 7/10 Beer Goggles - 7/10 Walkn' On The Sun - 8/10 Let's Rock - 6.5/10 Heave-Ho - 3/10 The Fonz - 6/10 Pet Names - 5.5/10 Padrino - 7.5/10 Disconnect The Dots - 6/10 Push - 4.5/10 Why Can't We Be Friends - 6/10

Smash Mouth - Walkin' On The Sun
Twenty-five years ago, they spoke out and they broke out of recession and oppression and together they toked, and they folked out with guitars around a bonfire just singin' and clappin', man, what the hell happened then? Some were spellbound, some were hellbound, some, they fell down, and some got back up and fought back against the meltdown, and their kids were hippie chicks, or hypocrites, because fashion is smashing the true meaning of it

Smash Mouth - All Star 1999
"All Star" is a song by the American rockband Smash Mouth, released as the first single from their second studio album, Astro Lounge (1999). It was one of the last tracks to be written for Astro Lounge, after the band's record label Interscope requested more songs that could be released as singles. In writing it, guitarist Greg Camp drew musical influence from contemporary music by artists like Sugar Ray and Third Eye Blind, and sought out to create an "anthem" for outcasts. In contrast to the more ska punk style of Smash Mouth's debut album Fush Yu Mang (1997), the song features a more radio-friendly style.
It received generally positive reviews from music critics, who praised its musical progression from Fush Yu Mang as well as its catchy tone. It was nominated for the Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards. Subsequent reviews from critics have regarded "All Star" favourably, with some ranking it as one of the best songs of 1999. The song charted around the world, ranking in the top 10 of the charts in Australia, Canada, and on the US Billboard Hot 100, while topping the Billboard Adult Top 40 and Mainstream Top 40 charts.
The song's accompanying music video features characters from the 1999 superhero film Mystery Men, which itself prominently featured "All Star". The song became ubiquitous in popular culture following multiple appearances in films, most notably in DreamWorks Animation's 2001 film Shrek. It received renewed popularity in the 2010s as an internet meme and has ranked as one of the most-streamed rock songs from 2017 to 2021 in the US. In June 2019, the music video was remastered in high definition and received subtitles in commemoration of its 20th anniversary. By that point, it had received over 219 million views on Youtube. In 2020, The New York Times listed the song as #1 in their top ten climate change songs.
"All Star" received a total of 90,9% yes votes!

The world of rock music has lost one of its brightest stars. Steve Harwell, the lead singer and co-founder of Smash Mouth, passed away on Monday, September 4, 2023, at his home in Boise, Idaho. He was 56 years old. His manager confirmed that he died of liver failure, a condition that he had been battling for a long time. Harwell was not only a talented singer, but also a pop culture icon. He was famous for his distinctive voice and charismatic personality, as well as his hit songs such as "All Star" and "I'm a Believer". He had an amazing career in the music industry, spanning over three decades and selling over 10 million albums worldwide with his band. He also had a colorful life, marked by his passion for music.
He was born on January 9, 1967, in Santa Clara, California. He grew up in San Jose, where he developed an interest in rap music and joined a group called F.O.S. (Freedom of Speech). He later switched to rock music and formed Smash Mouth with his friend Kevin Coleman, along with Greg Camp and Paul De Lisle. Harwell was influenced by various artists, such as Elvis Presley, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and The Clash.
Harwell and his bandmates started their career in 1994, playing at local venues and festivals. They caught the attention of a radio station that played their demo songs, which led to a record deal with Interscope Records. Their debut album, Fush Yu Mang , was released in 1997 and featured their first hit single, "Walkin' on the Sun", which reached number one on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and number two on the Hot 100 chart.
Their second album, Astro Lounge , was released in 1999 and became their most successful album to date. It contained their signature song, "All Star", which topped the charts in several countries and became a pop culture phenomenon. The song was featured in the soundtrack of the animated film Shrek , as well as other movies and TV shows. It also earned them a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group. Another popular song from the album was "I'm a Believer", a cover of The Monkees' classic song, which also appeared in Shrek .
Smash Mouth continued to release more albums in the 2000s and 2010s, such as Get the Picture? , The Gift of Rock , Summer Girl , Magic , and Rise and Shine . They experimented with different genres and styles, such as ska punk, reggae, country, and disco. They also collaborated with other artists, such as Baha Men, Eddie Money, J.D. McPherson, and Caravan Palace. Harwell also pursued a solo career, releasing two songs for the animated film Pororo: The Racing Adventure in 2013.
Harwell received many accolades and achievements for his music career. He won several awards from MTV, Billboard , Teen Choice , ASCAP , BMI , and others. He also performed at various events and venues around the world, such as the Super Bowl XXXVII halftime show, the World Series , the Olympic Games , Disneyland , and Carnegie Hall . He also appeared on several TV shows and movies, such as The Surreal Life , Rat Race , American Idol , Dancing with the Stars , Family Guy , Kim Possible , Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated , and SpongeBob SquarePants .
He died on September 4, 2023, after being in hospice care for final stage chronic liver failure. He is survived by his wife Michelle Laroque Harwell.
Harwell will be remembered as one of the most influential singers of his generation.

Maybe an unpopular opinion but one of my favorite things in albums (that aren’t an overarching story like Pink Floyd’s The Wall) is tonal whiplash.
LIKE I think the best example of this I can think of is probably Smash Mouth’s first album, Fush Yu Mang. The severity of the topic discussed in the tracks switches like every song. It goes as follows-
Bi girl rebounds with the cishet narrator guy because he looks like her butch ex, and once the narrator realizes that his gf is still in love with the girl, this he begs his butch doppelgänger to start dating his gf again so all three of them can be happy -> “god damn I would fuck anything rn” -> critique of capitalism and bigotry -> “who cares if we all die one day I got GUITAR” -> “damn Karen if you tell me to stop hitting my bong again I’m gonna kms” -> critique on how society views the suffering of celebrities vs average everyday people -> “my ex is a bitch” -> A song about the trauma those involved in organized crime suffer -> a really tragic song about a CSA survivor -> lighthearted breakup song -> the smash mouth equivalent of a kittydog vent song -> cover of “why can’t we be friends” -> bonus songs, one of which is titled “sorry about your penis”
And all of these songs feel like they belong on the same album (except for sorry about your penis but the demo version definitely seems to fit better)!!!!! And all of them are really damn good too, except sorry about your penis and push (the kittydog vent song).
Idk I’m having smash mouth thoughts tonight
