Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Relax 1983
"Relax" is the debut single by English new wave band Frankie Goes to Hollywood, released in 1983. One of the decade's most controversial and most commercially successful records, "Relax" sold a reported two million copies in the UK alone, easily ranking among the ten biggest-selling singles in the UK. It remained in the UK Top 40 for 37 consecutive weeks, 35 of which overlapped with a radio airplay ban by the BBC (owing to lyrics perceived as overtly sexual).
In June 1984, bolstered by the instant massive success of the band's follow-up single "Two Tribes", the single re-entered the Top Ten for a further nine weeks, including two spent at number 2 (behind "Two Tribes"). At that time, Frankie Goes to Hollywood were the only act apart from the Beatles and John Lennon to concurrently occupy the top two positions on the chart. The single re-entered the UK Top 75 in February 1985 and, more successfully, in October 1993, when it spent three weeks in the Top Ten. "Relax" remains the UK's biggest-selling debut single of all time. In March 1985 it reached number 10 during its 16-week run on the US Hot 100. In February 1985 the record was awarded Best British Single of 1984 at the Brit Awards, and Frankie Goes to Hollywood won Best British Newcomer.
"Relax" is a major plot point in the 2001 Ben Stiller film Zoolander, where the titular character male model Derek Zoolander is conditioned to assassinate a target when he hears the song. It was also used for the trailer of Zoolander 2 (2016).
"Relax" received a total of 85,1% yes votes!

Have you ever considered maybe dedicating a week purely to non-English songs, or doing themed weeks of any kind?
Yes, that would be so fun with a set of only non-English! 😍💖
I've done themed sets of 10 before, like cartoon intros, film scores, food theme, etc :) It's incredibly fun but also I've got zero attention span so it can take some time to assemble a full set of themed songs 😂

When you tag something as 'new to admin' is it only when the musician/band is new to you, or do you use that tag also if it's a song you don't know, even if you do know the musician/band?
It's only about the songs :) 💖

Electric Six - Gay Bar 2003
Electric Six is an American rockband formed in Detroit in 1996. They are known for combining elements of rock, disco, garage rock, metal, new wave, and punk rock. Since achieving widespread recognition in 2003 with the singles "Danger! High Voltage" and "Gay Bar", they have released 20 studio albums, two rarities albums, one live album and one live DVD. "Gay Bar" was written by band member Tyler Spencer, under the pseudonym Dick Valentine, and it was released on June 2, 2003 as the second single from their debut studio album, Fire. While both the song and music video received significant airplay, lyrics mentioning war were edited due to their possibly offensive nature, since the song made its air debut at the start of the Iraq War. A radio version in Japan exists in which the same lyrics are replaced with "let's do an edit, do a radio edit".
The song was nominated for the Kerrang! Award for Best Single. It also won Video of the Year award (2003) from both Kerrang and Q magazine. The band recorded "Gay Bar Part Two", a sequel to this song, for their album Flashy. The song was less of a direct sequel, opting instead to satirise their annoyance caused by people demanding a follow-up song as well as troubles with their previous record label demanding that they record "another Gay Bar".
"Gay Bar" received a total of 81,1% yes votes!

Brandy and Monica - The Boy Is Mine 1998
"The Boy Is Mine" is a duet by American singers Brandy and Monica. It was written by LaShawn Daniels, Japhe Tejeda, Fred Jerkins III, Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, and Brandy, while production was helmed by Jerkins and Dallas Austin. It was released as the lead single from both singers' second albums from 1998, Never Say Never by Brandy and the album of the same name by Monica. Inspired by Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney's 1982 duet "The Girl Is Mine", the lyrics of the mid-tempo R&B track revolve around two women fighting over a man.
The song was the first number-one pop hit for both artists, in the US and internationally. It spent 13 weeks at the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 and was at the time the second-longest running number-one song in US chart history, sharing this record with Boyz II Men's "End of the Road" (1992). "The Boy Is Mine" was the best-selling single of 1998 in the US with 4.5 million copies sold. It was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and was ranked eighth on Billboard's Decade-End Charts. Internationally, the single also achieved a strong charting, peaking at number one in Canada, the Netherlands, and New Zealand, while reaching the top five on most of the other charts on which it appeared.
The accompanying music video was directed by Joseph Kahn and starred Mekhi Phifer. It was nominated for two MTV Video Music Awards, including Video of the Year and Best R&B Video. In addition, "The Boy Is Mine" was awarded the Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group and received nominations for both Record of the Year and Best R&B Song in 1999. Billboard named it the Hot 100 Sales Single of Year and also listed it 54th on its 50th Anniversary All-Time Hot 100 Top Songs chart, as well as 18th on the All-Time Top R&B/Hip-Hop Songs countdown. The singers reunited on the 2012 single "It All Belongs to Me" and the remix of American singer Ariana Grande's 2024 single "The Boy Is Mine".
