Visual diary #2 | Accessibility

I think accessibility is one of the most overlooked aspects of how digital products are built.

For many users, the web is difficult to navigate and understand. Color contrast ratios, text hierarchy, and keyboard navigation are an excellent start, but more impactful changes are needed to ensure every user has been considered.

For this Wicked Problem, I see a lot of things that need to change. I also see an industry that has never been more ready and accepting of making it happen.

Trauma. Homelessness. Teenage Pregnancy. Missing Parents. Misguided masculinity. Just to name a few of the issues facing the students in this room. DCYCorps powered by #FutureFIRST invited @msjacquesline a child therapist and longtime DC social worker to speak with our young people. Bribed with cupcakes from @sweeterhue you can imagine how the kids minds, words, and hearts opened up. @faintlynormal , @thoughtprovoken and I sat there dumbfounded by the depth of wisdom, comprehension and advice these students (OUR STUDENTS) had to give. I have to say, I learned a lot. Trauma can raise a child quickly. Thank you @smallbizdc for providing us with the opportunity to create programs like these. -- --- . . . Mr. Honesty "Ms. Walker, your feelings can kill you." Mr. Zimmerman "Speaking to another man is hard. When you open up to other men they can make you feel insecure." . . . Mr. King "When I was younger, around 7, my father used to tell me crying was for bi@ches. Now that I'm older, I realize that was messed up." . . Ms. Pendarvis "I don't think I'm naturally crazy.
