I think someone needs to explain to the people behind X-men 97 that just because you have the characters call each other brother or sister, doesn't really stop the things they say from being really gay. Platonic and familial relationships are very important, I will fight for that, but when you use brother and sister as a no 'homo,' it feels awkward, least to me, than wholesome. Which I think is the intent.
Especially when it's only between two men or two women that it's said by. Kurt and Rogue don't count because they are literally adopted siblings, they are siblings who found each other which is different from found family. No one else calls each other brother or sister, because every other relationship which just makes it funnier. Like Storm has strong relationships with a lot of people on the team, but barely interacts with anyone other than Forge or Jean, ones her love interest and the other is definitely not supposed to be.
If you had Storm call someone else brother or sister it would be a part of her character. If she called Scott her brother too, which would make sense given how much time they have spent together and she calls him brother in the comics. She could have had a moment where she could have grieved Gambit, since they're also very close and are basically siblings in the comics (most of the time), calling him her brother as she mourned him. But since we don't, it feels weird for her to be calling Jean sister when she doesn't refer to anyone else, even though she refers to the X-men as family.
And it's just weird since X-men 97 is a pretty queer show, not amazing but still pretty decent. Morph is nonbinary and is in love with Logan, and we see a few same sex relationships on Genosia in the background. It's not overflowing with Queer characters, but it's there, the show acknowledges them, a lot of stuff was rushed in a 10 ep season. But then they use brother and sister so awkwardly with Charles and Magneto, and Jean and Storm.
The thing is, I'm not even a fan of either of those pairings. I don't like either Jean or Xavier so it's kind of hard to ship any pairing they're in. (Granted I do like 97 Jean better than the original animated series or comics version) And the dialogue between them still feels really gay.
