In the bright sun of day I am shadow A mask without a face A smile without a reason Laughter without glee A sign of existence Without presence So I breathe Bury my hand In the hot sand Shout out the pain Of heat and grief And emptiness Give voice To the being Which once cast The shadow Until the voice Becomes being A vessel For the light The pain and grief And emptiness Become the shadow (more…)

8 years ago I went to Gansu Province for the first time to play at the Silk Road Great Wall International Music Culture Festival in a city called Jiayuguan. I flew in from Beijing to a tiny airport and was greeted by the organizers and given a translator, a student who just knew a lick of English. Luckily I could already communicate basically in Chinese at the time. You could immediately see the relief on their face when they found out. The festival was a hope to boost tourism for the city and they were looking for foreign faces to make it look more international. I went up with a bunch of other bands from Beijing like Chui Wan, Skip Skip BenBen and even one of the godfathers of Chinese rock Xie Tianxiao. It was a fun experience and I had fun playing, but what I really took from the opportunity was the downtime I had in the mornings before and after the festival. I wandered around the city with my iPhone 4 and recorded audio everywhere I went. When I came back to Beijing I listened back and decided to set the field recordings to music. Fine Valley Pass (the direct translation of the city's name) was the result.
