GA RAM KIM IN NYC, DAY 28
Mon Nov 05, 2018 - Day 28
10:00am: Breakfast @ EVERYMAN espresso
Almond Croissant & Cappuccino~ yami!
Tumblr media
11:30am: HARLEM TOUR DAY
A teenager threw an egg across the road without any reason, and it’s narrowly missing a passerby who was crossing the crosswalk. (What’s wrong with him…)
Tumblr media
1) The Apollo Theater
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2) The Hotel Theresa
First luxury hotel in Harlem. I tried to go inside, but the receptionist said that it’s not the hotel anymore.
Tumblr media
3) Collyer Brothers Park
Tumblr media
4) National Jazz Museum The museum was cozy. I like the old music score, which placed in the piano. (It’s rolling!) And I wrote down some Jazz music playlists which were in iTunes of the museum. Moreover, I met a Jazz musician (a pianist) there. His name is David Durrah, who has been to Korea for his concert. He said that he has a concert here soon, but I said I am leaving soon. And he asked me to find his music on Youtube.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
5) Sylvia’s ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ “The Queen of Soul food”, it’s the American restaurant with cute decoration. I ordered MIXED GREENS SALAD topped Grilled Shrimp. The corn bread before the main dish was so tasty, and the salad was great! By the way, the waitress was so amazing, she recommended her own dressing recipe and prepared it for me and she made me iced coffee (with a take-out cup) which was not in the list of menu, she knew all that I wanted! +and I was happy that I could listen to the music ‘I’m Not The Only One’ by Sam Smith while I had lunch.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
6) Abyssinian Baptist Church
Tumblr media
7) Schomburg Center for Research and Black Culture I liked the interior of the hall. And they had a good building structure, there was in the exhibition room, which exhibited the archive and several paintings and also shows the library downstairs through the windows placed in the corner of the center.
Tumblr media
8) Harlem Hospital Center WPA Mural Look at the wall painting! I’ve never seen this kind of hospital, which has a huge wall painting exterior.
Tumblr media
9) 135th Street – Harlem Walk of Fame
Tumblr media
YMCA!
Tumblr media
On the way to the subway, I found a beautiful park.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5:30pm: NYCCares Beading with VISIONS
It’s a special experience to bead a bracelet with person who is blind or has low vision. The process was to help those people to make their own jewelery. I was looking forward to this volunteering work, because I was confident to do this work, beading and making something. However, it’s so disappointed. First, I met a mean person there. When I was hard to find some beads to figure out the same color, one of the volunteers said to me it’s okay, they do not know anyway. I was really shocked. How so mean. And the team leader of here seemed to be irritable all through the hour, and spoke in the imperative mood. When the work finished, she even said good bye. She was the most unfriendly person I’ve met here, and I thought she doesn’t suit the role of this work. It’s so sad night.

GA RAM KIM IN NYC, DAY 26
Sat Nov 03, 2018 - Day 26
Tumblr media
9:00am: Breakfast
Pecan pie & milk 10:30am: Braille Study Group @ Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Book Library
I went to Braille class, I had thought it would be boring, but I was so exited to learn the Braille alphabet! It was amazing, after learned the alphabet the tutor gave me some word quizzes with a Peg Slate, it was ‘babe’, ‘brick’, and ‘morning’. And she asked me if I could make a word, so I made her ‘thanks’. It was so interesting experience. When I left the class, she asked me when I could come again, I said I am leaving next Thursday and she was so glad I came here to learn Braille on weekend. She gave me a wonderful text paper written in Braille and with the Library logo lion as a gift. It’s so touched.
Here is the alphabet

And it’s the gift
Tumblr media
12:40pm: Lunch @ SG
Having a lunch Shroomami~
1:10pm: Coffee @ Gotham coffee roasters
And new coffee place! I asked a late with less milk, the barista recommended cappuccino instead, so I took it. (It’s a flat white what I was looking for! Love it!) And one thing I like here NYC, there are some good coffee places where provide coffee not too hot, with good temperature to drink.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2:10pm: FHAA 1st Annual Diwali – Festival of Lights celebration @ Queens Library
What I’ve learned here most of events do not start on time. So, I thought I could go to the Queens library till 2:10. Surprisingly, it’s delayed 30min, and the main event started at 3:15 (not 2:00);;; And the music concert was a bit disappointed; the musician sang a famous pop song in Indian style remix.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6:00pm: Joe & The Juice
Pick Me Up~
Tumblr media
7:30pm: Other Side of Wall Street (1609-1664) with Black Gotham
It’s started with distributing name cards to tourists. Each one has one name, and during the street tour the guide explained a story related to each person. The tour itself was not so interesting, but the tour guide was like an actress on stage. She has a good voice and gesture while she explained the stories although we were just standing or walking a street but it’s not boring. And interested in Black Gotham studio, they have also issued magazines and open their studio to the public once a week. But I think they need to reduce the fee for this normal street tour.

GA RAM KIM IN NYC, DAY 25
Fri Nov 02, 2018 - Day 25
7:00am: Breakfast
Bread & milk
on the way to ferry station (it’s an indoor interesting place!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8:00am: NYC ferry from Wall Street Pier 11 to Red Hook
Perry with coffee.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
9:00am: Compost at Red Hook Added Value Farm
I like the way people enjoying the work, they turned on the music during the labor, and talking to each other. And I didn’t expect I would face food garbage here. It’s a Halloween special. You cannot imagine how many pumpkins I chopped. (I felt sorry because they were cute) And I like their eco friendly process to make compost. The team leader friendly explained and was questioned. He said that the hurricane ‘Sandy’ changed everything. (It’s the sandy I was heard in Kepco). And the compost process reset, restarted from that moment. They had a volcano shaped compost system, which made mixed up with food garbage and wood fragments with coffee bean peel, they all from their community. Surprising this system is so scientific, it made heat itself inside, and release heat (co2) into the air on top of compost. In conclusion, it offset the bad smell too. (As a result, it possible they can be located near their neighbor such as high school, IKEA and community) I thought Korean Ministry of Environment should come and see.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
12:30pm: Lunch @ Hometown Bar-B-Que
I ordered a brisket sandwiches. It’s not what I expected. But it’s really delicious!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
1:30pm: Record Shop browsing
I bought one record! It’s cozy and lovely shop around second hand records! (Moreover they had a barbershop inside!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
it’s a speaker!
Tumblr media
2:00pm: Pioneer Books
The Reanimation Library, it’s a small place but there were interesting books including independent art exhibition catalogs.
Tumblr media
on the way home
Tumblr media
4:00pm: taking a nap
I was so tired; I needed to take a sleep before the next schedule. 7:00pm: The Ecstasy of the False Positive
It’s mermaid special. The lecturer, Rich Pell is a museum founder of center for postnatural history. (I saw a picture and it’ looks interesting). He has an interesting point of view of mermaid, and has fundraised for the research. The place, Biotech Without Borders looked interesting, it’s a casual laboratory. By the way, a guest who was late for 30min, took her dog in the lecture, and she sit behind me, and I freaked out whenever the dog turn round under my chair, she talked to her dog keep silent, and the dog shook himself. (It’s raining outside). I could not concentrate on the lecture at all, and people too. I was upset by her manner without a shred of common sense.

GA RAM KIM IN NYC, DAY 24
Thu Nov 01, 2018 - Day 24
10:40am: Listen to Bowery Boys Chinatown Podcast @ Sweet Garden I had breakfast listening to the Pod cast in Sweet Garden

2:30pm: Museum of Chines in America
There’s free gallery admission on first Thursday of the month. I was interested in their exhibition of woodblock, and metal type blocks. It’s not big as much as I expected but looked well organised.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4:00pm: Tai Chi in Elizabeth Street Garden
Another closure! But Elizabeth Street Garden was beautiful. I got to know that the class wasn’t there today from the staff of the Garden. They said that although there’s no class, you could do your own Tai Chi yourself, but I said no. (Because I didn’t know what is Tai Chi…)
About the China day, today: Actually, it’s not so impressive because there are Chinatowns throughout Korea as well, even nearby my SASG residency and nearby my hometown. But I like the process: storytelling-> exploring locations-> Museum
Tumblr media
5:00pm: MoMA PS1
Because I had some time until the screening, I headed to MoMa PS1. (It’s one of the places I wanted to go in NYC, I had the museum pass now, and it’s close from Union Docs) The place was interesting (the building reminded me my school in London, Chelsea College of Arts), but I was surprised the fact that I was not so much interested in the exhibition. (It might be… I had much more interesting adventures here for the last 3weeks.) And I had an iced latte and snack in the café.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7:30pm: Union Docs Screening: HERE AFTER Documentary
It’s popular. All tickets were sold out. But I was interested in the organisation, ‘Union Docs’ than the movie. Because the trailers and their program introduction before the movie, looked so interesting. Fortunately, it’s not so long, took about 1 hour. Now I am searching their website.

GA RAM KIM IN NYC, DAY 23
Wed Oct 31, 2018 - Day 23
5:00am: Breakfast
Woke up at 5. It’s really hard to wake up early. Before leaving home, I had a meal. (Last night I bought cinnamon pastry bread from Bread Bakery)
6:00am: NYC Cares- Breakfast Serving @ Crossroads
Arrived the church at 5:55 There were already a line of homeless, and they kindly let me know where is the entrance. For the first 30min, I made peanut better sandwiches. And served meals to guests. There are many kinds of people for the volunteer works, someone has worked for 20years, and another has done for 3years. They have come every Wednesday before going to work. It’s really amazing. The work ended at 8:45am. I felt good. 9:45am: 15min swimming @ my apartment
I was alone in the swimming pool again. 12:00pm: Lunch with Steven Rand @ Square Diner
I really enjoyed the lunch with Steven. We visited an American classic restaurant. I ordered Portobello mushroom salad, It’s tasty, but couldn’t finish all because it was so big (as always). We talked about the fellowship program, the artist creativity, and volunteer works. Steven said that we are doing volunteer works because we could learn from them. (It’s impressive) And talking about ‘artist’s savior complex’ was also interesting. He was the first person who calls the collectors “enemy”, who could say “why?” with the saying I cannot be creative as much as now when I become old. He said that people normally become conservative with advancing years. But artists should be different. (I need to think about “How keep my creativity”, “Entertain whom” and “What can I do with my works”.) He asked me if I understand this fellowship program; I could say I’ve been super upgraded :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2:30pm:  Check in at apexart
Surprise! I can go to art museum! Apexart provided me free pass to MoMA, Metropolitan museum, and Guggenheim. So exited!   I got the final week schedule. I have mixed feelings. I will miss here and people.
Tumblr media
3:30pm: Psychotherapy session with Nancy
I could not believe that it’s the last session. It was really lucky to meet her; during the session I could frankly talk what I thought and what I felt, so I could realize my change. I really appreciate the time with her. Thank you Nancy! 5:00pm: Halloween Horror stories @ BAKED
It’s boring; the storytellers were so serious and they were not prepared well. But the avocado toast was delicious.
Tumblr media
7:30pm: Village Halloween Parade
It was amazing! People flooded in the street to watch the Halloween Parade. There were partly traffic controls, (so, it’s hard to get home) the Parade showed interesting performance, installation and costumes in various ways. I liked that people enjoyed Halloween, and it’s parade. I have felt how people exited from their costume, to decorations of home, shops & streets since I arrived here. Thanks to this, I was exited too. I hope that we could also have this kind of festival, which all people could enjoy and celebrate each other. It makes people really happy.

Sadly, the (popular) egg sandwiches were sold out (for breakfast), but (alternative) Beef sandwiches was good enough & iced latte (less milk)

12:40pm: New York Botanical Gardens (NYBG)
On the way to NYBG, I did not expect anything. I just thought that, “Weekend is not the weekend anymore here, weekend means the day of the long journey (here and there) in this fellowship.” However, NYBG was really good. There were “Hawaiian Special” gardens with links to paintings of Georgia O’Keeffe. It’s genius. I was amazed their ability to make a content with artwork. (Moreover, it’s popular!)

1:00pm: Featuring Performers from the Hawaiian Room (NYBG)
Most time was they were playing music than dancing. 2:00pm: Film Screening: the Hawaiian Room (NYBG) @rose hall in the library

6:30pm: Movies Under the Stars: Coco
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Movie was so beautiful. Finally, I could meet a good movie here! The story showed how a boy, Miguel begins to mature and grow, and realises the importance of family love at the end. It’s a masterpiece, above a well-made animation after the Lion King. I was crying when Héctor was singing ‘Remember me’ for her daughter, Coco. (*He is Miguel’s grand grand grand father.) And I like the title, it’s not Miguel, it’s Coco.
*Before coming here I could not understand why I should come here, a faraway hill at dark cold night, but once I saw the landscape with this amazing night view far away from the city, (and there was an artwork ‘Climates Signals’ as well) I thought that I am happy (with Coco). Next time, I would bring a big bean bag :)

GA RAM KIM IN WASHINGTON DC, DAY 19
Sat Oct 27, 2018 - Day 19
9:00am: With Casey Smith
Casey is a poet and a professor. He came to the hotel, and we visited St. Margaret’s Church where held a flee market with her girlfriend. Actually, he was on the way to drive her to the place, but accidentally I asked to come along.
Tumblr media
10:00am: Breakfast @ Teaism Penn Quarter
Leaving her (for more shopping) in the church, we headed to a restaurant for breakfast. The place was interesting because there were carps in the pond in the basement floor, and they had an Okonomiyaki for the breakfast menu. (How creative!) More creative thing was it’s served with topped egg and bacon instead of dried bonito, and with ketchup.   We talked about the apexart and my journey.  He gave me a ride to the Union Station, and we had a coffee (there was Blue bottle!) He was nice to me, and it’s very thankful.
Tumblr media
12:50pm: Heading to NYC
Finally, going back to NYC! (20min delayed with the megabus on the departure, but I thought it’s okay). However, it's more delayed to get NYC. There was a car accident forward us on highway. (The way was blocked over one hour) 6:30pm: arriving at the NYC
No way~ Today’s gone. Not saying Megabus is bad, but it’s just not for me. 6:45pm: The Pho 2
Just in the 7min distance by walk from the arrival stop, there’s a pho restaurant. This pho was much better than one in OBAO, but still could not find better than Emoi.

GA RAM KIM IN WASHINGTON DC, DAY 17
Thu Oct 25, 2018 - Day 17
10:00am: (Bad) Megabus to Washington D.C.
The bus stop of Megabus to Washington D.C. was in the 34th street. And it’s delayed over 1hour;;; it was so cold waiting 1hour 20min outside. (delayed 1hour + they asked people at the station 15min before) Nobody knows the reason why. People were just waiting. The person in front of me made a call to the customer center, but they also didn’t know about the situation. Just told, “waiting!”. (This wouldn’t happen in Korea, people never wait or be waited for 1hour without any announcement.) Finally, 11:10 the bus left the NYC station, and I arrived D.C. at 15:45. I haven’t got the lunch today, so I had a sandwiches in Pret A Manger at the Union Station. (By the way, the sandwiches types are quite different here, I prefer UK’s selection. I love Posh Cheddar & Pickle Baguette: Pret pickle + roasted tomatoes. But I cannot find it in the U.S.)
Tumblr media
4:15pm: Union Station
buying the Metro ‘SmartTrip’ card I get the information online, it will be helpful for first-time visitor in D.C. For English: https://www.wmata.com/fares/smartrip/ For Korean: https://blog.naver.com/lna106/221310821827 By the way, how people travel without Smartphone, without Internet…. I had been in Europe with my best friends in 2005 (before the iPhone era) I cannot still believe how we traveled among the 6 countries…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
4:50pm: Check in at Windsor Inn
Finally, Check in! (They have good heating system~ warmy~)
Tumblr media
5:15pm: Explore Dupont Circle neighborhood
First, I didn’t get what is the “Embassy Row”. But it’s the Embassy Row! There are every embassies there! The most impressive moment was that I found the bronze statue of Dr. Philip Jaisohn (서재필 선생, 1864-1951) in the Korean embassy. He was one of the most important Korean fighters for national independence in the Japanese colonial era. It’s the first Korean statue in Washington D.C, installed 10 years ago.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And this is disappointed moment in Korean cultural center: the Halloween decoration was so disappointed;;; what a pity! it’s worse than just next door normal houses’.)
Tumblr media
And here is Cosmos Club! It’s so cool! (Unfortunately, they allow the public tour in the limited period.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6:45pm: Korean food in Triple B Fresh
I ordered Bibimbap.(Their price is very reasonable.) Brown rice, egg, beef and Seasoned Vegetables: it’s a beautiful healthy combination. It’s actually my first Korean food in the U.S. It’s been 2 weeks since I haven’t got Korean foods.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8:00pm: Firehook
Cream cheese (like marshmallow) brownie and coffee.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8:30pm: Kramerbooks & Afterwords Cafe
How beautiful harmony café and book store! And even they open until 1am! And Friday, and Saturday until 3am! I wish I could be here with my book club ‘Dadok Dadok’. I am sure they love it!

2:00pm: Biking
1hour-riding a bike all around the Governors island I love seaside, and I love biking. What a lovely combo! 3:30pm: Tour the Hills in the island with Emma
It’s an amazing experience. Emma was so nice to me and I was very happy with her wonderful tour guide during 1hour. (Moreover we took a club car for the touring) The island has been NYC since 2003. They only open to the public only for 6month duration and i got the last chance to visit just before their closing. (I was so lucky) We visited many places in the island; most interesting parts were hammock places, slide section and the Rachel Whiteread's carbin. (I know I am allowed to visit exhibition place, but it was just there) I really appreciate Emma, she made me one of the best moments in NYC.

7:00pm: American Ballet Theatre @ David H. Koch Theater
Fortunately, Elizabeth & I got a chance to watch this amazing ballet show. we had a drink for celebrating tonight, before the show. It started at 7:30pm, we had a great orchestra seat. The program composed of three sections, ‘Garden Blue’, ‘Dream within a Dream’ and ‘In the Upper Room’. -Garden Blue: it’s like a painting in an art gallery. The stage background was a beautiful colored painting, and there were wooden sculptures moved by dancers. -Dream within a Dream: It’s so much fun like a Broadway musical. The moving lights were perfectly working for the show, and the orchestra sound was cheerful enough. Tap dancing with the rhythm uplifted the atmosphere. -In the Upper Room: Ballet like a Ballet. Turbulent sounds and ceaseless movement were standing out. The great part was the music. It was a borderless art show itself. Moreover it was good to see how the contemporary ballet completely modernized today. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ You should get the ticket! *Special thanks to Elizabeth: finding the references for each show & being company *Interesting point: Dancers have individual sponsors. It’s an interesting idea. (It reminds me UNICEF one to one support.)

GA RAM KIM IN NYC, DAY 14
Mon Oct 22, 2018 - Day 14
9:00am: Morning yoga with Hope Killcoyne
It was intense yoga. Normally, I prefer doing sports (swimming, biking…) it was hard time. And it’s not a class for beginner. And I didn’t expect I would listen to K-Pop during yoga;;; (the tutor has been learning Korean language.) I met Hope and did yoga together. (She is an author, editor, and photographer.)
10:15am: Coffee with Hope
It was a good time with Hope. She looked energetic and curious. I thought she would be one of the fellows of apexart, but it turned out she was a visitor in a gallery. And she was requested get a chance to meet fellows like me. I was more interested in how apexart has found people for fellows’ meeting. (It’s another adventure in a good way, they are real people outside of the art world) by the way, is it possible in Korea? 12:00pm: Pecan pie with milk
The best pecan pie ever! On my way home, I dropped by Green market and just picked up one pecan pie. And it made my day. How could they make this perfect pie! It had crispy crust and caramelized inside with topped Pecan. I should bring them to Korea!
Tumblr media
1:00pm: BIRCH COFFEE
It’s a good coffee place, I ordered iced latte with less milk, and it was good! and I liked their Halloween decorations.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1:30pm: Lecture at John Jay College of Criminal Justice
‘EDUCATIONG FOR JUSTICE’ it’s so cool! I expected the lecture would be focus on the ‘Current Immigration policies’, but it was more about to discuss encouraging emigration to find a solution for Healthcare Service in the U.S considering supplement decrease in the medical department.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6:00pm:  The Universe of Zoe Valdes with Linda Schrantk
I was almost lost. The book talk was spoken in Spanish, it made simultaneous interpretation to English but it has strong Spanish accent, and so so so fast. It’s really hard to understand. I felt like listening to the 2hours-endless rapping. (I wonder if they were breathing) Linda called Zoe ‘tough cookie’.
Tumblr media
7:00pm: Dinner with Linda
We had dinner in a Japanese restaurant, fukusuke. She did a restaurant research for me, because she knew that I love foods from my journals. She is a painter who used to teach painting at art colleges such as Frat or Parsons, so she had taught many Korean students. And she might consider me as one of them.

Sun Oct 21, 2018 - Day 13
10:00am: Morning Service at Christ Church New Brighton in Staten Island I needed to leave home at 8:30 to get there. The Ferry to Staten Island runs every 30min. (And the bus does as well in the island.) The service of the church had baptism as well, so it took more time. Sadly, many seats were empty. *I need to let my friends know, there is free ferry in NYC.

2:00pm: Sea Shantey Sessions @ The Noble Maritime Collection Skipping lunch, because the ‘Blue’ restaurant near the collection closed for the private reason. Because he location was quite in a remote place, I couldn’t find the other replacement. (I decided to go to eat after the Sea Shantey Sessions.) The Noble Maritime collection was placed in a big mansion, showed works of John A. Noble, and restored his houseboat studio. And the sessions started in the hallway at the 2nd floor, It’s a casual folk music concert. Some players were late, but it didn’t matter. They were singing a song like storytelling. They also took song requests. The melody was a bit sad, ringing in my ears.

4:00pm: Amazing Italian restaurant, Enoteca Maria Strongly recommend! Fresh seafood! Foods & Staff were amazing! My main dish was Filetto di Pesce in Cartoccio  (Filet of cod baked in a parchment paper with shrimp, calamari, and octopus cooked in a white wine sauce. Served with a side of sweet potatoes and broccolis) We also have the similar roasted sweet potato food, called Gun-goguma in Korea, but I never tried it with seafood. (They were very going well.) It’s big... although I only ordered main dish, I was so full to finish them all. Dessert: homemade tiramisu was beautiful! Coffee was very good. But, they accepted cash only, I had to withdraw some cash from the ATM. (Cash only places still exist!) Filetto di Pesce in Cartoccio ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Tiramisu & Americano ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

6:00pm: Walking to Woom without Google map I was panic on the way to Woom. Navigating without Google map was the challenging itself, moreover the address information was wrong; There was not 247 Bowery place anywhere;;; (it was 274 Bowery place!) I was wandering about 20min in other places;;; And I turned on my Google map…
7:00pm: Woom Gong with Elizabeth Larison Fortunately, I arrived just on time. Elizabeth was waiting for me. It’s special experience. The temperature of the air, lights, and scent were perfect to provide one’s emotional stability. It’s a spiritual meditation. The host encouraged people to breathe in and out slowly. (It has something in common with the book from Nancy.) At first I couldn’t focus on well, but it’s getting better as time went by. During the session, I was absorbed in thought. I need to find this meditation in Seoul as well. It give me the time to think, it’s meaningful.
