warnings: swearing, flirting, gareth being a little shit, brief mention of a potential skating accident (doesn’t actually happen), two idiots that can’t skate, fluff

a/n: hi!! i was quite stressed earlier today because i’ve got severe social anxiety and i had to go out to eat, but i did it and then i got a book! so as of now i’m okay. long car ride and rewatching a movie and writing this for you. i had something to drink at lunch but that’s all. i’ll get something later i swear! (how are you? hope you’re okay my sweet!!) thank you for your request!! this is super precious. also i’ve never actually been ice skating, so i hope this turned out okay!!

“Get your coat, Gareth.”

“I’ll be fine.”

“Gareth fucking Emerson. Get your coat, or I’m leaving your ass here.”

“Whatever you say, mom.”

That earned him a smack on the back of his head, curls bouncing as he tried to dodge your attack too late.

When you got to the rink, however, he changed his tone. He’d thought that since it was indoors, he’d be just fine.

“It’s fucking freezing in here, holy shit, are you kidding?”

“This was your idea, Gare. Your idea. But I bet you’re glad you brought your coat now, huh?”

Gareth stuck his tongue out at you like a child.

“I have no idea why I’m with you right now.”

He rolled his eyes, scooting closer to you in your place in line. His hands rubbed up and down your sides.

“Because I look like this.” He gestured to himself and you removed his hands from your hips.

He grinned at your annoyance. You moved up with the crowd, hoping to shoo him away.

“And because I love you. Thank you for coming with me.”

He kissed your shoulder, thought that was kind of a stretch considering the variety of layers between his mouth and your skin. It was cold in Hawkins, and very cold in this ice rink.

He stepped ahead of you once the counter was in view, retrieving your skates and paying for your hour long time ticket.

Then the both of you listened to the tired assistant manager tell you the same safety speech she’d told everyone else all day, and all week, and that she’d tell for the rest of the month.

You plopped down on a rickety bench to put on your skates. When you’d finished knotting the laces, you looked up at Gareth.

His head was bent and you watched as he finished his own tying.

Suddenly he looked up at you, panic in his eyes. “Why’d I say I wanted to do this? Have you looked at these things? What if I fall out there and someone skates by and slices my fucking nose off?”

You laughed at his distress, though having thought about the same thing on the way.

“Then I guess you won’t have a nose anymore.”

He scoffed at you and then pouted.

“That is not helping.”

You brought your hand to his face, pushing a naughty curl behind his ear. You drug your thumb across his bottom lip, then over the crease between his brows, smoothing the pout away.

“Sweetheart, you’re gonna be fine. Besides, if it happened that often, this place wouldn’t be open.”

Gareth had been calming down before you threw that out into the world. But you were pulling him up and out to the rink, and there was nothing he could do about it.

Gareth Emerson made it about ten feet before he fell on his ass.

It didn’t matter, considering half of the rest of the people were laughing at their exact same predicaments, but it was also partially his fault for assuming he’d be automatically great.

If I can roller skate, then I can figure this out too. You told yourself, holding onto the side rail and gently moving yourself along, trying to glide like you saw the other, more experienced skaters doing.

You reached behind you for Gareth’s hand, only to turn and see him on the ice.

Helping him up, you offered him a cold kiss to the cheek to soothe the embarrassment, though you only made it a little further before you found yourself slipping.

Gareth caught you though, almost like a trust fall, laughing and tossing his head back.

He looked ethereal every time he did that.

“Careful, baby. You’re like Bambi.”

“Bite me.”

A little further, and Gareth was down again. This time, you found yourself laughing, realizing you both sucked as at this, and there really was no reason to be embarrassed when everyone else was having the same problem.

He begged to hold your hand, though you refused, telling him that he “would not be taking you down with him.”

Not that that prevented anything. You passed a little girl doing full on spins, and you paused in awe, slightly because you’d managed to get the foot movement down to keep yourself up, but also because who the fuck can just do that?

Behind you, Gareth was not doing so well. He slipped again, grabbing hold of your shirt for purchase, and then you were both on the ice, palms read and chests heaving with laughter.

“Thanks dumbass!” You shouted at him, though there was no real anger in your voice.

Eventually, the both of you got back up, though you were sure your knees were trashed now because of it.

From then on, you decided to hold his hand and work together. Shockingly, it kinda worked.

You moved along, making one full loop around the rink without falling.

In the midst of contemplating how hockey players just did this shit all the time, Gareth looked over at you.

“I think I bruised my ass.”

His comment took you by surprise and you cackled, though you slipped, and went down once again.

When your hour was up, and you’d both fallen numerous more times, you found yourselves outside, cups of hot chocolate in your hands.

You sat down, though wincing as you did so. You were totally not in shape.

“Gonna sit with me, Gare?”

He shook his head. “Uh uh. No way. I wasn’t kidding. I’m not gonna be able to sit for a week.”

My fic: the eleventh day of christmas (chapter 55 of With a Little Help From My Friends)

Synopsis: El spends a super fluffy, extra merry Second Christmas with Gareth and his family.

Snippet:

She hurried to open the front door, and literally shrieked with glee when she saw who was standing on the stoop— Grant, Jeff, and Eddie, all grinning at her, each wearing different silly Christmas themed headgear. Jeff had on a bright red and white Santa hat, while Grant’s hat was green and pointy like a workshop elf. Eddie had a headband tucked into his curly hair with a tree attached, that lit up with different colored flashing lights when he pressed a button on the side of it. A moment later Gareth slipped outside to join them, sporting a headband of his own adorned with reindeer antlers.

El giggled. “What are you guys doing?”

Eddie brandished his trusty acoustic guitar at her. “We’re caroling!” he announced. “You ready to hear the most metal choir ever, Bella?”

She nodded happily and said she was ready, but honestly, nothing could’ve prepared her for what she was about to hear. She was expecting something light and silly; maybe “Jingle Bell Rock” or “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer” (her dad’s favorite) or something along those lines. But her boys surprised her.

10. Do you work on multiple wips or stick to one fic at a time?

What writer doesn't work on multiple wips at a time? I just abandoned like six(teen) wips for a short, spunky, 9 part Christmas series.

16. Do you write by hand, on your phone, or on your laptop?

I write by hand if I have no service (which is often) but mostly on my laptop, just because my phone's always dead and writing on phone google docs stresses me out.

22. Do you title your fics before, during, or after the writing process?  How do you come up with titles?

Oh, Lord. I title them before, during, and after the writing process, usually when inspiration strikes. 90% of the time it's before I get started because the wip title is floating around in my head and that's how I force myself to finish it. "Can't let a good title go to waste!"

I come up with titles pretty much on the fly, or it's something so, so stupid-- basically the summary of the fic itself lol.

26. What’s your least favorite part of the writing process?

All of it. The writing part specifically. No, I'm kidding. I really hate the dialogue-to-action ratio and feeling like I didn't get it right? I've been having a lot of issues with that recently.

35. What’s your favorite fic you’ve posted?

Oh, my God. Probably 18 (Gareth Emerson x reader) or Die First (Max Mayfield x reader), just because they're both for characters that don't get a ton of love. For 18, I worked on it for a month and a half, and for Die First, it took me two days. Writing inspiration/motivation is weird as hell.
