Analysis of 'The Brood'

The Brood is a 1979 Canadian horror film written and directed by David Cronenberg. It stars Oliver Reed, Art Hindle, and Samantha Eggar, with Henry Beckman, Nuala Fitzgerald, Susan Hogan, Cindy Hinds, Gary McKeehan, and Nicholas Campbell. Creepy children have become a staple of horror movies ever since Patty McCormack terrorized everyone as Rhoda Penmark in The Bad Seed (Mervyn LeRoy, 1956). The key here is the depiction of evil lurking behind a façade of innocence. Actually, the creepy child in The Brood is not Candice Carveth (Cindy Hinds), an otherwise ordinary 5-year-old, except as a vehicle for bringing out the creepy childlike creatures that are the movie's menace. It's a good, bloody, somewhat queasy film that plays on all sorts of phobias, including our suspicions about psychiatrists, and our tolerance for bodily functions. It proved too much for some of its early critics, including Roger Ebert, who dismissed it as an exploitation film, "reprehensible trash," and a bore. It may be the first, and perhaps the second -- given that one person's trash is another person's genre classic -- but it's certainly not the last. David Cronenberg is an insidious filmmaker, who constantly plays on our nerves without resorting to cheap jump scares. He makes you back off at times: In the scene that made most people feel at least faintly nauseated, I found myself saying, "It's only corn syrup and food coloring." We may also debate whether the film is fair to the psychiatric profession and even if there's a touch of antifeminism, but that means he's left you with something to think about. To dismiss The Brood as exploitative is to overlook the satire with which it's laced.

I certainly don’t like my movies easy. David Cronenberg’s THE BROOD (1979, HBO Max) was in many ways his breakthrough. It’s the best-cast of his early films, meaning there aren’t any cringeworthy performances. By his fourth feature, his technical work had become smooth, with editing enhancing the suspense just as his tracking shots suggest a sense of ever-shifting realities. But the story of a man (Art Hindle) fighting for custody of his daughter while his mentally ill wife (Samantha Eggar) undergoes risky, experimental therapy at the hands of a manipulative psychiatrist (Oliver Reed) can easily be dismissed as misogynistic, at least on the surface. It’s KRAMER VS. KRAMER (1979) with the wife as a monster. But she’s a monster under the control of a male who sees her not as a person in need of therapy but rather as a test subject. Reed’s “psychoplasmics” encourage patients to manifest their traumas physically. When they’re ruled by guilt, it results in boils and, in the worst case, cancer. But what happens with a child of abuse consumed by rage? The Criterion web page has Carrie Rickey’s excellent analysis of the film as a meditation on divorce and loss, though I think she makes a common error in viewing Reed’s character as sexually as well as psychologically manipulative. Watching the film, I was surprised at the amount of queerness injected by Cronenberg. Reed’s character seems very close to his assistant (Nicholas Campbell), and his jousting for power with Hindle takes on a sexual tinge. They have one of their confrontations while Reed is in a bathrobe, and Hindle resembles Campbell. Is he Reed’s type? In building his case for sole custody, Hindle interviews a former patient (Robert A. Silverman) who seems to be subtly coming on to him. Later Silverman introduces Hindle to another patient (Gary McKeehan) who’s having his own breakdown, and he gets awfully handsy with him. Does that make the film homophobic? I’m not sure. To me, it all fits into the geography of loss underlying the action. They’re all just desperate attempts to connect in a world that makes that impossible.

1- James McDougal – Clintons convicted Whitewater partner died of an apparent heart attack, while in solitary confinement. He was a key witness in Ken Starr’s investigation.

2 – Mary Mahoney – A former White House intern was murdered July 1997 at a Starbucks Coffee Shop in Georgetown .. The murder …happened just after she was to go public w:th her story of sexual harassment in the White House.

3 – Vince Foster – Former White House counselor, and colleague of Hillary Clinton at Little Rock’s Rose Law firm. Died of a gunshot wound to the head, ruled a suicide.

4 – Ron Brown – Secretary of Commerce and former DNC Chairman. Reported to have died by impact in a plane crash. A pathologist close to the investigation reported that there was a hole in the top of Brown’s skull resembling a gunshot wound. At the time of his death Brown was being investigated, and spoke publicly of his willingness to cut a deal with prosecutors. The rest of the people on the plane also died. A few days later the Air Traffic controller commited suicide.

5 – C. Victor Raiser, II – Raiser, a major player in the Clinton fund raising organization died in a private plane crash in July 1992.

6 – Paul Tulley – Democratic National Committee Political Director found dead in a hotel room in Little Rock , September 1992. Described by Clinton as a “dear friend and trusted advisor”.

7 – Ed Willey – Clinton fundraiser, found dead November 1993 deep in the woods in VA of a gunshot wound to the head. Ruled a suicide. Ed Willey died on the same day his wife Kathleen Willey claimed Bill Clinton groped her in the oval office in the White House. Ed Willey was involved in several Clinton fund raising events.

8 – Jerry Parks – Head of Clinton’s gubernatorial security team in Little Rock .. Gunned down in his car at a deserted intersection outside Little Rock Park’s son said his father was building a dossier on Clinton He allegedly threatened to reveal this information. After he died the files were mysteriously removed from his house.

9 – James Bunch – Died from a gunshot suicide. It was reported that he had a “Black Book” of people which contained names of influential people who visited prostitutes in Texas and Arkansas

10 – James Wilson – Was found dead in May 1993 from an apparent hanging suicide. He was reported to have ties to Whitewater..

11 – Kathy Ferguson – Ex-wife of Arkansas Trooper Danny Ferguson, was found dead in May 1994, in her living room with a gunshot to her head. It was ruled a suicide even though there were several packed suitcases, as if she were going somewhere. Danny Ferguson was a co-defendant along with Bill Clinton in the Paula Jones lawsuit Kathy Ferguson was a possible corroborating witness for Paula Jones.

12 – Bill Shelton – Arkansas State Trooper and fiancee of Kathy Ferguson. Critical of the suicide ruling of his fiancee, he was found dead in June, 1994 of a gunshot wound also ruled a suicide at the grave site of his fiancee.

13 – Gandy Baugh – Attorney for Clinton’s friend Dan Lassater, died by jumping out a window of a tall building January, 1994. His client was a convicted drug distributor.

14 – Florence Martin – Accountant & sub-contractor for the CIA, was related to the Barry Seal, Mena, Arkansas, airport drug smuggling case. He died of three gunshot wounds.

15 – Suzanne Coleman – Reportedly had an affair with Clinton when he was Arkansas Attorney General. Died of a gunshot wound to the back of the head, ruled a suicide. Was pregnant at the time of her death.

16 – Paula Grober – Clinton’s speech interpreter for the deaf from 1978 until her death December 9, 1992. She died in a one car accident.

17 – Danny Casolaro – Investigative reporter, investigating Mena Airport and Arkansas Development Finance Authority. He slit his wrists, apparently, in the middle of his investigation.

18 – Paul Wilcher – Attorney investigating corruption at Mena Airport with Casolaro and the 1980 “October Surprise” was found dead on a toilet June 22, 1993, in his Washington DC apartment had delivered a report to Janet Reno 3 weeks before his death.

19 – Jon Parnell Walker – Whitewater investigator for Resolution Trust Corp. Jumped to his death from his Arlington ,Virginia apartment balcony August 15, 1993. He was investigating the Morgan Guaranty scandal.

20 – Barbara Wise – Commerce Department staffer. Worked closely with Ron Brown and John Huang. Cause of death: Unknown. Died November 29, 1996. Her bruised, naked body was found locked in her office at the Department of Commerce.

21 – Charles Meissner – Assistant Secretary of Commerce who gave John Huang special security clearance, died shortly thereafter in a small plane crash.

22 – Dr. Stanley Heard – Chairman of the National Chiropractic Health Care Advisory Committee died with his attorney Steve Dickson in a small plane crash. Dr. Heard, in addition to serving on Clinton ‘s advisory council personally treated Clinton’s mother, stepfather and brother.

23 – Barry Seal – Drug running TWA pilot out of Mena Arkansas, death was no accident.

24 – Johnny Lawhorn, Jr. – Mechanic, found a check made out to Bill Clinton in the trunk of a car left at his repair shop. He was found dead after his car had hit a utility pole.

25 – Stanley Huggins – Investigated Madison Guaranty. His death was a purported suicide and his report was never released.

26 – Hershell Friday – Attorney and Clinton fundraiser died March 1, 1994, when his plane exploded.

27 – Kevin Ives & Don Henry – Known as “The boys on the track” case. Reports say the boys may have stumbled upon the Mena Arkansas airport drug operation. A controversial case, the initial report of death said, due to falling asleep on railroad tracks. Later reports claim the 2 boys had been slain before being placed on the tracks. Many linked to the case died before their testimony could come before a Grand Jury.

Ten days after Elder’s son was convicted of trafficking in cocaine, Walraven was found dead in his apartment with a gunshot blast to the head. Tim Hover, a Little Rock police spokesman says no foul play is suspected.

54 - Caetano Carani - Witness to a shooting near the White House. Suffered an unknown infection just before he was to testify. Death attributed to “apparent” food poisoning.

He held many other high-level political positions, including vice chairman of finance for Clinton-Gore in 1995; finance chairman of the 53rd inaugural ball; and vice chairman of finance for the DNC in 1996 (when the Chinese money poured in). Attributed to a bicycle accident in which it’s claimed he struck his head on the concrete twice.

61 - Dennis Eisman - An attorney with information on INSLAW. Eisman was found shot to death on April 5, 1991.

62 - Don Adams Died Jan 7, 1997 - Long before Whitewater’s land flips made the Clinton’s circle of friends rich, many of the same players had been involved in a similar land swindle in Branson. Kennedy International airport.  The Air Force Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules transport aircraft was carrying a presidential vehicle and many pieces of luggage, all related to the president’s vacation (50th birthday celebration in the Grand Tetons). President Clinton said Sunday afternoon that he was told the pilot was attempting to return to the Jackson Hole airport when it crashed (CNN news report).  The Air Force reported finding no evidence of an in-flight mechanical emergency  after examining the flight data and flight voice recorders and could not find evidence that the pilot radioed mechanical trouble be      fore crashing into the mountainside as reported by the White House. The victims included 8 crew members and one Secret Service agent. The aircraft and crew were stationed out of Dyess Air Force Base.

Jumped to his death from his Arlington, Virginia apartment balcony August 15, 1993. He was investigating the Morgan Guaranty scandal. Barbara Wise - Commerce Department staffer. Worked closely with Ron Brown and John Huang. Cause of death unknown. Died November 29, 1996. Her bruised, nude body was found locked in her office at the Department of Commerce. Charles Meissner - Assistant Secretary of Commerce who gave John Huang special security clearance, died shortly thereafter in a small plane crash. Dead MenTell No Tales

The following is a list of people who met an untimely death. The only common denominator was a relationship of some sort with the Clintons. Circumstantional or "dead men tell no tales"? You decide! Susanne Coleman, a Clinton law student, told a friend that she was expecting Bill Clinton's child. She was 7 months pregnant when she died of a gunshot wound in 1978. Sheriff Gene Mattthews was shot and killed in 1983 when he was looking into alleged drug activities of Bill Clinton at Mena, AR airport. Kevin Ives and Don Henry were 2 teenage boys that supposely had fallen asleep on a railroad track in Arkansas in 1987. It was later determined that the boys were killed prior to being placed on the tracks. The boys misfortune was that they stumbled on the drug running operation outside of Mena. These people died because they knew too much about the suspicious deaths of the two boys: Keith McKascle, Gregory Collins, Jeff Rhodes, James Milam, and Jordon Ketelson. Danny Casolaro, reporter investigating several Clinton scandals, was found dead with wrists cut in 1991, in the bathtub of his hotel room in West Virginia. C. Victor Raiser and son C. Victor Raiser II, fundraisers for "Clinton for President" campaign died when their private plane crashed in 1992 in Alaska. Gary Johnson, a neighbor of Jennifer Flowers, taped Clinton breaking into her apartment in 1992. He was later beaten and left for dead. The video was taken. Paula Grober, Clinton's attractive speech interpreter for the deaf, died in 1992 in a one-car accident. She traveled extensively with Clinton from 1978 until her death. On July 20, 1993, White House Counsel Vince Foster died under suspicious circumstances from a gunshot wound. Foster was critical of Clinton's Presidential Blind Trust, and was in control of files containing Clinton's shady dealings in Arkansas. Immdiately after Foster's death his office was ransacked and the files taken. James Bunch, influential Texan and a friend of Bill Clinton, died in 1993 from a gunshot wound similar to Vince Foster's. He was discovered to have kept records of many powerful people who visited prostitutes. Stanley Huggins, partner in a Memphis law firm, died in 1993 after his firm headed an investigation of Madison Guaranty S&L. His 300 page report has never been released. Bodyguards: William Barkley, Scott Reynolds, Brian Haney, and Tim Sabel died in a helicopter crash in 1992, in Virginia. Bodyguards: Major William Robertson, Colonel William Densberger, Colonel Robert Kelly and Crew Chief Gary Rhodes, all died in a helicopter crash in 1993, in Germany. Bodyguards: Steve Willis, Robert Williams, Conway Bebleu, and Todd McKeehan. All four died at the Branch Davidian assault at Waco. All had nearly identical wounds to the left temple, although they allegedly died in combat. John Wilson, former Washington DC Councilman, was found dead in 1993 from an apparent hanging "suicide", Wilson was ready to go public with incriminating information about Bill Clinton.

Described by Clinton as a “dear friend and trusted advisor”. 7 – Ed Willey – Clinton fundraiser, found dead November 1993 deep in the woods in VA of a gunshot wound to the head. Ruled a suicide. Ed Willey died on the same day his wife Kathleen Willey claimed Bill Clinton groped her in the oval office in the White House.
