Mon tissu préféré, Gaya Jiji (2018)
A Damas, au printemps 2011, la révolution populaire gronde en Syrie. Face à cette émulsion urbaine, Nahla (Manal Issa), jeune femme de 25 ans, s’émancipe de son carcan quotidien en apprenant à apprivoiser ses désirs.

Son existence est en effet bien morne. Vendeuse dans un magasin de prêt-à-porter, son salaire aide à payer le loyer de l’appartement qu’elle partage avec sa mère et ses deux sœurs cadettes. La situation financière de la famille est fragile, et cette précarité est renforcée par le climat de tension et de guerre civile qui est sur le point d’éclater.

Tout semble basculer lorsque Nahla fait la rencontre de Samir, un Syrien établi aux Etats-Unis et revenu au pays pour prendre femme. Cependant, l’entrevue ne se passe pas comme prévu en raison de la malice un peu brusque de la jeune femme. Déstabilisé, Samir jette finalement son dévolu sur sa sœur, Myriam (Mariah Tannoury).

Blessée, Nahla se met encore davantage en retrait de la cellule familiale, qui est obnubilée par les préparatifs du mariage et le prochain départ pour fuir la guerre.
Elle se rapproche alors de la nouvelle voisine, Madame Jiji (homonyme de la réalisatrice), qui a ouvert une maison close dans son immeuble. Ce monde de plaisirs, où les interdits et les secrets sont bannis de l’appartement, engage Nahla à s’évader dans ses rêves.

Celle-ci y retrouve chaque fois le même homme mystérieux, interprété par Metin Akdülger. Très chastes, ses rêveries sont partagées à égalité entre la fascination pour le désir masculin (ici très efféminé) et le satin de la robe dans laquelle elle apparaît toujours.

On comprend alors que, faute d’expérience vécue, Nahla s’isole dans un idéal où son homme (à défaut d’amant) lui demande de rester, de ne pas partir, et fait preuve de tendresse sans désir. Enfermée dans ce processus cyclique, la découverte des activités au sein de la maison close fait l’effet d’un détonateur dans l’esprit de la jeune femme.

Mon tissu préféré, à mon sens, propose le récit -très- métaphorique du passage du rêve à la réalité des désirs pour une jeune femme libre, indépendante mais seule et incertaine, qui plus est dans un monde en plein chaos.
Le grain de l’image capte les émotions les plus subtiles des personnages, et Manal Issa porte somptueusement le rôle principal : elle crève l’écran à mes yeux.

NK screamed. Khushi ran out of the kitchen to the living room.
"Nanheji! Kya hua?"
[Nanheji! What happened?]
"Mera ankle twist ho gaya! Aap ke paas koi balm hai? Oh, Khushiji, it hurts so much!" [I twisted my ankle! Do you have any balm? Oh Khushiji, it hurts so much!] NK complained as he hobbled over to the sofa.
"Hum abhi lekar aate hai!" [I'll get it right now!] Khushi said, already running upstairs. Akash, who had been watching from behind the pillar, sent a quick text to Arnav.

Khushi opened her cupboard. And gasped. Arnav was inside. Smiling. She almost smiled back, reminded of the time she had hid from him in the same cupboard.
Arnav hopped out, causing her to jump back in alarm.
"Hum dono ne aaj tak joh joh ek saath kiya hai, bas wahi yaad dilane ki koshish kar raha hoon. Kal ke liye sorry. Main chhata hoon tumhe hamare achhe moments yaad rahe. Kuch yaad aaya?"
[I'm just trying to remind you of the things we've done together. Sorry for yesterday. I want you to remember our good moments. Did you remember something?]
"Nahi." [No.] she said, walking around him to her cupboard. She took the balm and went to the living room. Arnav followed her.
NK stood up when he saw them. "Arey Khushiji, mera pair theek ho gaya!" [Arey Khushiji, my foot is fine now!]
"Achha... theek hai," [Oh...okay,] she said, putting the balm down on the coffee table. Behind her, Arnav gestured to Akash to put Plan #2 into motion.
"Khushi bhabhi!" Akash called as he walked up to her.
"Bhabhi? Kyun maska laga rahe ho, devarji?" [Bhabhi (sister-in-law)? Why are you trying to butter me up, devarji (brother-in-law)?] Khushi laughed. He always called her that when he wanted something from her.
"Mujhe aapki help chahiye! Bahut badi problem ho gayi hai. It's an emergency!" [I need your help! There is a big problem. It's an emergency!] Akash said.
"Kya hua? Kuch bataiye toh." [What happened? Tell me properly.] Khushi asked with concern.
Meanwhile, Arnav took advantage of Khushi's distraction and picked up a corner of her dupatta.
"Payal mujhse naraaz hai! Mujhe samajh mein nahi aa raha use kaise manau. Aap hi meri help kar sakti hai!"
[Payal is mad at me! I don't know what to do. Now only you can help me.]
Arnav tried to get the dupatta stuck on his cufflink but it just wouldn't stay.
"Zaroor! Aap bilkul theek jagah aaye hai. Aap toh jaante hai, hamare plan kabhi fail nahi hote. Aur hamari jiji hai! Koi aur kaise mana sakta hai?"
[Of course! You came to the right place. You know that my plans never fail. She is my jiji! How can anyone else cheer her up?]
Arnav rolled his eyes at her monologue. Then went back to work. The dupatta just wouldn't stay. He even tried to hook it onto his watch.
"Haan, toh vistaar se bataiye kya pareshani hai." [Yes, Tell me in detail what the problem is.] Khushi said.
Now Akash looked panicked. He hadn't anticipated having to actually come up with a detailed story for Khushi.
"Woh...woh...main office se late aaya tha na...toh..." [I...I...I was late from work today...so...] Arnav realised that Akash had reached the end of his line. This was taking too long.
"Forget it," he thought and just tied the dupatta around his wrist. He gave Akash a thumbs up.
"Haan! Toh bas usi wajah se. Achha abhi mujhe jaana hai. Bye, Khushiji! Thank you." [Yes! Yeah, so, that's why. Okay now I have to go. Bye, Khushiji! Thank you.] Akash beat a hasty retreat.
"Arey, lekin, humne toh kuch salah di hi nahi!" [But I didn't give you any advice!] Khushi shouted after him. But he was long gone.
She started to walk to the kitchen but felt her dupatta pull at her neck. Khushi turned around in surprise.
Arnav was behind her, holding his wrist up.
"Chodiye hame!" [Leave me!] Khushi demanded, pulling at the cloth.
"Khud chuda lo." [Do it yourself.] Arnav said.
Khushi reached for his hand as she walked towards him. But he drew his wrist to his chest forcing her to step closer. She looked at him, then. And he wanted to memorise that moment—the light blush of her cheek, eyes wide but unafraid, lips curved in the beginnings of a soft smile—to carry it forever. For a second, he hated that he had tied the knot so tight because it meant she had to break eye contact.
"Tumhe yaad hai ek baar tumhara dupatta mere button pe atak gaya tha? Main wahi karne ki koshish kar raha tha par hua nahi. Toh maine apne haath pe hi baandh diya." [Do you remember, once your dupatta was stuck on my button? That's what I was trying to do but it didn't work. So I just tied it on my hand.]
"Hame laga tha aap sab kuch kar sakte hai." [I thought you could do everything.] She said, holding back her laughter. She freed her dupatta and was about to step back when he put his right hand on the small of her back and pulled her back.
"Mujhe tumhe kuch dikhana hai." [I want to show you something.] Arnav whispered. Then, before she could say anything, he added, "Chalo mere saath." [Come with me.] He held her hand and led her up to their room.
Before they entered the room, Arnav placed his hand over her eyes.
"Arnavji, kya—"
[Arnavji, what—]
"Shh. Just wait."
They stumbled in and Arnav took off his hand. On the wall by the window, there was the picture of the two of them from Preeto's sangeet. Khushi looked at Arnav with tears in her eyes.
"Mujhe uss din yeh photo nahi todni chahiye thi. Isi ki tarah, mere gusse ki wajah se bahut kuch ruin hua hai."
[I shouldn't have broken this photo the other day. Like this, my anger has ruined a lot of things.]
"Par aapko yeh mili kahan se?" [Where did you find it?] Khushi asked.
"Garima Aunty ne Preeto ki maa se lekar mujhe bheji." [Garima Aunty asked Preeto's mother and sent it to me.] Arnav explained.
"Toh ab?" [Now?] Arnav asked.
"Ab kya?" [Now what?] She looked back in confusion.
"Ab toh mujhe apna pati maanti ho, na?
"Nahi." [No.] She was touched by his gesture, but it wasn't enough.

The next morning found Arnav in the mandir of the house.
"Chote!" Anjali walked up to him. She put her hand to his forehead. "Tumhari tabiyat toh theek hai na? [Are you alright?]
"What? Di, I'm fine!" he said, shrugging away. "Mujhe kya hua hai?" [What could happen to me?]
"Nahi, bas, aaj tum mandir mein? Raasta kho gaye the kya?" [No, just, you are in the temple today? Did you forget the way?] she said.
"Di, please!" Irritated at being teased, and more than a little embarrassed, Arnav trudged back up to his room, Anjali's laughter still echoing behind him.
"Now what?" Arnav thought. He needed something from the temple for his next plan. Then an idea struck him. NK! Everyone was used to NK's antics. They wouldn't ask too many questions if he borrowed something. Arnav changed course and headed to his cousin's room.
A few minutes later, Arnav had what he needed. He peaked in through the door to see Khushi sitting on one corner of the bed, folding clothes. Her back was to him. Perfect.
He tip-toed close and leaned over to hold her hands. His head was on her shoulder, stubble tickling her neck. Khushi's breath caught. Arnav ran his fingers up her arms, slowly. When he got to her shoulders, Arnav stopped. He shifted back. She was about to turn around to look at him but he gently placed his hands on her cheeks and tilted her head back. Khushi's eyes widened when she saw the tika on his head. Arnav leaned further down until their foreheads touched. Now Khushi had a light kumkum tika as well. When he moved back up, their eyes met. Their hearts raced. He knew that they were both remembering the time she had done this to annoy him, early in their marriage.
Abruptly, Arnav stood up and left the room. Khushi was left in a daze, blush hot on her face. She touched her forehead and smiled.

"Hurry up!" Arnav said, wishing he had come up with a plan that didn't require him to be tied up in fairy lights because Akash was being supremely inefficient right then.
"Almost done!" Akash said, stepping back to admire his handiwork. "Okay, stay here. I'll message NK to bring Khushiji."
"Not like I can do anything else." Arnav grumbled. Akash left the poolside, turning on the lights on his way out. The scene was set.

NK pulled Khushi up the stairs, urging her to walk faster. He pushed her into her room and immediately shut the door.
"Hey Devi Maiyya!" Khushi exclaimed when she saw Arnav. "Yeh kaise hua?" [How did this happen?] she approached him. Arnav rolled his eyes. He flinched, pretending that one of the bulbs had hurt him.
"Khushi, please meri help kar do." [Khushi, please help me.] She began untangling him. "Yeh hai aapki nayi tarkeeb? Aapko lagata hai lighton mein ulajhna accha idea hai? Yahi mila tha aapko, yaad dilane ke liye?" [Is this your new trick? You think it is a good idea get tangled in the lights? You choose this to remind me?]
"Aise keh rahi ho jaise tumhe kuch feel hi nahi hua tha. Jaha tak mujhe yaad hai, tumhari toh saanse phool rahi thi." [You are speaking as if you didn't feel anything at that time. Arnav smirked.
"Kuch feel nahi hua tha hume! Bas current laga tha."
[I felt nothing! Just electricity.]
"Wahi toh main keh raha hoon, current laga tha." [That's what I'm saying, just electricity.] He winked at her and she grew flustered, looking anywhere but at him.
Suddenly, she gasped. Her hands would have come up to her face as they did when she was shocked, but this time they couldn't on account of being tangled in the string of lights.
"Hey Devi Maiyya! Yeh humne kya kar diya?" [Oh Devi Maiyya! What have I done?]
Arnav burst into laughter. Khushi couldn't look away. It was so rare for him to be lighthearted and carefree in this way. It made her feel content.
"Hum pe hasna band kijiye aap!" [Stop laughing at me.] They made quite the spectacle, tangled up in fairy lights together.
"Yeh sirf tumhare saath hi ho sakta hai." [This can only happen to you.] Arnav said, shaking his head at her wonders. He started to free himself so he could help Khushi. Clearly, she couldn't be counted on to do it.
"Okay bye!" He shrugged and began to walk away.
"Haw!" She gasped.
Slowly, he turned back.
"Haan, yeh thi meri nayi tarkeeb. Par tumhe pareshan karne ke liye nahi. Maine yeh sab moments bas isiliye recreate kare kyunki main chahta hoon ki tum hamesha woh achhe pal yaad karo jo humne saath bitaye hai. I'm sorry, Khushi."

Cannes: Films By Spike Lee, David Robert Mitchell and Jean-Luc Godard Lead The 2018 Festival Lineup
The lineup for the 71st Festival de Cannes has been revealed and, as expected, there wasn’t a Netflix title to be found. The titles that did make the cut include world premieres from Spike Lee (“BlacKKKlansman” with Adam Driver), David Robert Mitchell (“Under the Silver Lake” with Andrew Garfield) and Jean-Luc Godard (“Le Livere D’Image”), among others.
As previously announced, the opening night film is Asghar Farhadi’s “Everybody Knows” which is now the Oscar-winners third Cannes premiere in competition. “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” directed by Ron Howard by credit, was also previously revealed as an out-of-competition screening.
Only 18 titles were announced for competition and often the slate is up to 24 films. Festival head Thierry Fremaux noted that last year’s Palm d’Or winner, “The Square,” wasn’t announced until a week after the official reveal. That means there is hopefully room for more than one film to be added to what is currently a slight in competition field.
Titles expected to be announced which were not include Terry Gilliam’s “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote,” Jacques Audiard’s “The Sisters Brothers” with Jake Gyllenhaal and Joaquin Phoenix, Luca Guadagnino’s remake of “Suspiria” and Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma,” the later of which was recently acquired by Netflix and clearly the reason for its absence.
