It seemed like people were getting mail more often these days. For not the first time this week, Wayne’s had a hard time trying to fit an abundance of letters into their respective slots, coming up frustrated when they tumble out and spill all over the floor haphazardly. With a lengthy, aggravated sigh, he’s gathering them up in his hands and examining the address printed neatly on each one.

Well. Not the first time he’s been strange, showing up at someone’s place of work with letters in hand.

That’s how he found himself here, standing inside the Little Black Dress, mail in hand as he feels strangely out of place. After getting the attention of a seamstress who appeared more than a little flustered when he called her sweetheart, she politely excused herself and disappeared somewhere among the racks to find a Mister Julius Welkes . At the very least, he had the right place.

We Meet Again || Julius & Elliott

How odd was it that Harbour Pointe itself seemed to be a luring ground for all ex-partners world over to drift together and meet once more. After his encounter with Iris, Elliott couldn’t help but fixate on the idea when he caught sight of an intimately familiar face at the Peake Contemporary Gallery. He knew there was currently an exhibit going on regarding fashion over the past two hundred years, but to suddenly see Julius there...

It had to be Julius. The hair was different, yes, and the attire, but he knew that face from so many nights curled up in bed beside him that year in college and talking softly through the evening.

Still just as beautiful as ever.

Though Elliott had been trusting the exhibit to inspire him for his next novel project, he immediately abandoned all concept of solitude, moving instead to stand facing Julius’s side, drinking in his profile. “...come here often?” he asked with a slow smile spreading across his face.

Bad Taste || Julius & Maerwen

Most of the time Maerwen appreciated the taste of the employees of Little Black Dress. She wandered in there more frequently nowadays, simply to admire what works they’d created, each one beautifully customized and far more expensive than what she could handle.

Today, however, as she entered the store, she came to a sudden halt, staring at an enormous man - compared to her 4′9 self, at least - who wore the...loudest, most...fascinatingly hideous garment she’d ever seen. Avante-garde, perhaps? Flirting with gender roles?

Either way, even though she couldn’t look away from him, she decided then and there that she hated it.

“Excuse me,” she said seriously, face pinched. “Did you make your outfit?”

When did Murti Puja start in India

Vedas envisioned GOD in athromorphic forms.  Purush Sukta is an example of how the 'nature' and the divine are intertwined and viewed in a human form. Indra, Agni, Surya etc were all visualised in human forms but the sages clearly stated that these divinites could take any form they wished.  They took a human form because it was easy for us to relate to them in a form that was familiar to us.  So rituals of worship for the divine were made 'familiar' to us.  Welcoming Gods, washing their feet, offering them argya, food, entertainment etc were rituals created to make us feel at one with the divine. 

In the Vedic times, Gods were envisioned in their wonderful, magnificent, awe-inspiring, humanoid form with multiple limbs.  The sacred fire was used to invoke the Gods and the fire was appropriated in ways to please the Gods.  Countless rituals state how to do this.  At no point do they mention a murti of any substance.  This is because at those rituals, God HimSelf was present - in person - in the form of the wonderfully bright fire.  Why would you have a murti - a dull material object, when you can have the bright, effulgent person of GOD that moves and 'speaks' to you in the form of the fire!

There is no mention of any murti or a temple in the Vedas, early Purans or the 2 Itihases - ie Ramayan and the Mahabharata.  There are many places of pilgrimage and ashrams of sages - but no temples or murti-puja.  Rama does not even worship or establish the Shiva Linga at Rameshvar!  This is a later myth, added to every other Ramayan written after Valmiki's original.  

First major mention of a hero worshipping the Shiva Linga is in the Mahabharata during Kirata Yudha section.  Shiva duels with Arjun and the Pandava prince worships a temporary Shiva Linga made from soil / clay to appeal to the deity for victory.  There is no mention of a murti before or after this incidence.  

Shri Maad Bhagvatam in book 10, chapter 22 mentions the Vrajkumaris worshipping votive images of Devi Katyayani, made of (river)sand, with flower, sandalwood paste etc.  However, no description is given of this goddess or her murti.  There is no mention of what happened to the murti after its puja.  Was it placed in the river or just left there as it was?     

Shri Maad Bhagvatam mentions murti puja and a temple in the Rukshmani Haran episode.  Besotted by what she has heard about Shri Krushna, the daring daughter to Damghosh sends a message to Dwarkadhish on the eve of her marriage and asks him to elope with her!  She even proposes how he can do with minimum violence - by taking her away when she has gone out for pre-wedding Gauri Puja.  Book 10, chapter 52, shlokas 39-50 describe the procession to 'Devi-sadan' and all the elaborate rituals of applying unguents, sandalwood paste, clothes, jewellery, garlands and arti.  This is the one and only time puja is described in such detail and a temple is mentioned.  Still, no murti is described.  There is a description of everything - including the gemstudded belt of the princess and her brushing away the dark curls from her face with her left hand to look for Shri Krushna!  But no description of the murti.  Temple is mentioned, but not described.  

Reading the description pilgrimage sites, Tirth, it is obvious that they are an oasis of calm in natural settings of mountains, streams, the confluence of rivers, ancient trees and unusual rock formations.  In this, they are similar to the Shinto shrines of today.  These Tirtha had no central temple or a murti.  The entire area was considered sacred.  If a specific site was identified,  It was still open to one and all.  

I believe murti puja entered India with Alexander the Macedonian.  Till then we knew about the fire-worshipping Zorastrians worshippers of Baal and Amun-Ra from distant western shores.  Greeks brought their Gods, carved in marble.  Their realistic human forms were very alluring.  Creating Murtis of their Gods and leaders was first adapted first by the Buddhists, Jains and than Hindus.  We can see the Egyptian and Greek influences to our 'puja'.  Paintings of ceremonial worship show food and flowers offered to their gods.  Pharohs offer incense and arti in 'long-handled spoons' and pots with a single flame.     Rest, as they say, is history.  Greece and Egypt are now havens of iconoclasm.  Old murtis are broken or stored in museums.  And India has embraced murti puja with full gusto.
