Get Geneforge 2 - Infestation: The Enhanced RPG Experience
Tumblr media
Geneforge 2 - Infestation open-ended adventure game is playable on Linux via Proton with Windows PC and Mac. Thanks to the skilled team at Spiderweb Software for making this happen. Available on both Steam and GOG. If you're into RPGs and looking for something new to dive into, check this out: Geneforge 2 - Infestation has just landed on PC and Mac, and it's playable on Linux. This isn't just any release; it's a complete overhaul of the cult favorite "Geneforge 2" from 2003.
All of our games run well under WINE emulation. We’ve done it in the past, and I’m afraid they don’t sell.
Although Spiderweb Software doesn't offer native ports, their games are compatible with WINE, which extends to Proton too. It's a bit of a letdown not to have a native build, but at least there's a workaround for Linux players. The team at Spiderweb Software has gone all out here, expanding on the original into Geneforge 2 - Infestation. Along with added storylines, quests, and adventures, not to mention a slick, updated UI. But don't worry, they've kept all the elements that made fans like the original. It's all about striking that balance between the new and the nostalgic, and it looks like they've nailed it.

You get to play as Shapers, incredibly powerful wizards with the ability to create life. The twist? Your creations, once loyal, are now rebelling. Caught in the middle, you're faced with a huge decision: support the Shapers or join forces with the rebels. It's a complex setup that offers a ton of freedom in how you approach the situation. The enthusiasm for the Geneforge 2 - Infestation release is a given. A hugely successful Kickstarter campaign raised over $76,500, thanks to more than 1,500 backers. This support has allowed the developers to pack in even more content. We're talking about over 50 hours of playtime, multiple endings, and loads of replay potential. Whether you're into direct combat or prefer a more strategic, diplomatic approach, there's a playstyle for everyone. And choices matter here; they shape the world and your experience. Geneforge 2 - Infestation isn't just a simple touch-up; it's a full revamp with new areas, quests, characters, and dialogue. The team has reworked everything to bring it up to modern standards without losing the charm of the original. Jeff Vogel, the founder of Spiderweb Software, sums it up well. He's a veteran in the industry, and "Geneforge 2" is one of their biggest successes. According to him, the depth and variety in player choices. Such as being able to go through the entire thing without fighting. While making it stand out even two decades later. So, if you're on the hunt for a solid, old-school open-ended adventure game with a fantastic story and lots of freedom, Geneforge 2 - Infestation is definitely worth checking out. It's available right now Windows PC and Mac, but playable on Linux via Proton on Steam and GOG. Priced at $16.99 USD / £14.23 / 16,57€ with the 15% discount.

geneforge 2 infestation was great. it's good if you are in the pocket for isometric crpgs and i am, very much. there's some ways in which objectively it plays like shit but if you can get through something like planescape torment, the original fallouts or even morrowind than this shit should be fine.
i'll be interested to see what changes are made to geneforge 3's to link everything together. i think the setup for g2 is a bit contrived. you have the factions from g1 who have been literally imported out to the mountains to set up their whole thing again. it's surprising that the shapers in charge were given that much leeway that you're apparently the first scouting party to go out there in years - i don't think it should have been this easy for zackary to get away with all that when he's way too old and resigned to be a master conspirator, even if his compatriot wasn't the Juice Wizard.
star wars is a setting that only works if you ignore the fact that all the societies in that setting are built on the backs of droid slave labour. geneforge is a setting that's entirely about scrutinising that. g1 was very specific in what it was doing when it introduced you to the idea of the serviles, an entire species created to be slaves, and then set you loose on the island where their masters/creators abandoned them. there's no attempt to justify the way serviles are treated by the shapers. in the first chunk of the game you meet two farmers with land grants who have been given a bunch of serviles to till the land. both of them mention 'being firm' with the serviles to keep them in line. whips and chains are common trash in the scenery.
vogel likes writing games about empires and imperialism but i think the shaper empire is the best in any of his games. they're wizards who can create life from nothing and they've used that to subjugate the known world. they make magical livestock creature and crops that can live anywhere. they also make giant wookies and living revolvers to keep people in line. they jealously hoard their power and the party line for doing so is that shaping is incredibly dangerous and requires strict regulation. the reality is a little more complicated; it's clear that shaping is dangerous in unqualified hands but the shapers have a clear interest in keeping their secrets to themselves. in addition, the shapers themselves seem to struggle with holding things together. the landscape is littered with abandoned labs, abandoned creations, the detritus of forgotten projects. the titular geneforge was one of those projects but it kinda seems like a shaper fucked up centuries ago by creating the serviles and all of the chaos now is a result of that.
i like the awakened and the takers. in too many games the moderate faction is the right one, as opposed to a militant faction of insurgents that have 'gone too far'. the awakened want to be treated as equals by the shapers but they're not just peaceniks. they're extremely militant and the endgame for them is about creating their own army of superbeasts to protect them from the inevitable shaper reprisal. the difference is that the takers see themselves as the vanguard party and they're honestly not wrong. why should the shapers be allowed to do what they do anywhere? if a war is inevitable, why not see it through to the grisly end? the issue with the takers isn't that they're wrong (the game never suggests that the shapers are the good guys) but that their military elite are literal dragons of avarice. here comes the new boss, same as the old boss.
the servant faction are there if you wanna taste the boot. zackary is their spokesman, the old shaper who has unintentionally sowed the seeds of the empire's destruction out of stubborn pride. i think he gets executed in most of the endings. even though you start off as a shaper in training it's hard to sympathise with the shapers you meet when you know the party line is that everyone and everything here needs to be enslaved and destroyed.
the barzites seem like the more fun bad guy faction. zackary's erstwhile colleague barzahl has been mass-producing new shapers using magic canisters that just edit your DNA to be able to do magic. the power is addictive and corrupting and barzahl thinks that's fine. he has a bizarre college of nascent juicers and his master plan is to feel good, all of the time. if regular shapers are nerds, barzite's shapers are jocks. absolutely nothing good can come from them. it's very funny.
i think you can also just leave as soon as you've completed your objective, which is very funny.
anyway game good

Game release: "Geneforge 2 - Infestation" (PC)
Spiderweb Software‘s fantasy CRPG Geneforge 2 – Infestation continues the mutant monster mayhem creation in a remastered form. I already covered the first game or rather remake in the Epic Games Store free games: “Geneforge 1 – Mutagen” + “Hood: Outlaws & Legends” + “Iratus: Lord of the Dead” article, and this title is no different, as it’s based on the 2003 Geneforge 2 and offers the same…
