LEVIATHAN ADVERTISING POSTER...

The aptly renamed Leviathan had one of the saddest careers of any of the great liners.

Completed as the Vaterland in 1914, she was the second of Albert Ballin's masterly, triple pronged response to the Olympic and Titanic. At the time, she was the largest ship in the world, and the flagship of the Hamburg- Amerika Line.

She was in New York at the start of the Great War, in the midst of her third round trip. The liner remained trapped there for almost three years, until the United States seized her for conversion into a troopship in April of 1917.

President Woodrow Wilson himself came up with the name of 'Leviathan'. After refitting, she did sterling work transporting the 'doughboys' of General Pershing's army that fought against the fatherland.

After being converted back into a luxury liner, she re- entered service for United States Lines in 1923...

98 years ago today: New York City welcomes home General John Pershing and 25,000 of his #WorldWar1 soldiers. This is the battle map Pershing used at his General Headquarters in Chaumont, France. Colored metal pins and paper squares map the locations of the Allied and Central armies and battle lines along the Western Front. Here's what each color means, per the legend: Round red pins: Battle lines Round white pins: Army group boundaries Round pink pins: Army group boundaries Blue and white paper stars: Location of French or British armies Red paper stars: American armies Black and white paper stars: Belgian armies Black paper stars: German armies At the center left of the map, near the map legend, the city of Paris is highlighted in pink. You can see Pershing's desk on display at the museum right now, with a reproduction of his map. The original is too fragile to display in its entirety, which is why we're sharing it online.
