Hi Archivist, very tired RA from the Towers here. Just confiscated this bottle of nail polish from one of my kids, apparently she was inspired by Kissin' Kate and bargained One Of Them for some venomous polish of her own. Except it's not infused with snake venom, no, it's got freaking hydra blood mixed in. I get the urge to get some cool murder nails, I really do, but I think hydra blood is going too far. Anyway here it is, take it off my hands: it's shimmery pale blue like the north wind and crushed opals, and smells faintly like mint and the air before it rains. To its credit it apparently lasts a very long time without chipping, but I don't think the potential risk of agonizing death by merely being GRAZED by your own nails is worth the staying power.

Honestly though? Good for her. She just has to work on context: this is high fashion meant for the Gentry's Court, rather than Monday morning Intro to physics. Pass along my admiration, if you'd be so good.

A charm for you, for the troubles you've taken bringing this here: three small glass vials, with corks singed in lichtenberg fractals. Each is half-full of an ice-blue plasma that crawls erratically up the sides of the vial. Liquid lightning, full of the potential of your recent past self, because you seem like you're being run ragged and a pickmeup likely wouldn't go amiss.

And for the aspiring alchemist, who doubtless has an interesting future ahead of her: a mask in the shape of a crescent moon, which obscures all of the face but one eye. It's beautifully made, enamel and gilt detailing making it shine, and it's very certainly haunted, with a lot to say about everything. I couldn't tell you if it's passively malevolent, but I think it might be able to offer her some useful revel-adjacent advice for the price of being worn to interesting parties again - it's grown quite bored in my little hermitage here.

In celebration of the franchise’s 20th anniversary, I have to share with you all with their birthday corresponding with feast days that is honored and recognized by the Roman Catholic Church!

September 20 - Sora Harewataru (Cure Sky)

St. Andrew Kim Taegon: 19th century Korean martyr who was first Korean-born Catholic priest. In the late 18th century, Roman Catholicism began to take root slowly in Korea, and was introduced by scholars who visited China and brought back Western books translated into Chinese. Born of yangban (a part of the traditional ruling class or gentry of dynastic Korea during the Joseon Dynasty), parents were converts and his father was subsequently martyred for practising Christianity, and after he baptized at 15, he studied at a seminary in Macau. Andrew also spent time in study at Lolomboy, Bocaue, Bulacan in the Philippines, where today he is also venerated. During his trip to Korea, Andrew is canonized as a saint by Pope St. John Paul II, along with 102 other Korean Martyrs, including Paul Chong Hasang on May 6, 1984.

Alice Flagg and the Hermitage

Alice was the sister of a brother who was much older. Dr. Allard Belin Flagg was very domineering toward Alice due to the age difference and since their father was no longer living. Dr. Flagg built the Hermitage in 1848, a stately mansion that remains today in an ancient stand of live oaks just off Highway 17. The drive is bordered by cedars and tidal marshes surround three sides of the mansion.

At 16, Alice was attending school in Charleston and met a young man. They soon fell in love and he gave her an engagement ring. When she returned to the Hermitage for Christmas, she hid the ring on a ribbon under her dress. She knew that her brother would not approve of her fiance, who was in the turpentine business and not of the aristocratic gentry of planters and professionals.

Alice returned to school and enjoyed the spring. She made her debut at the spring ball. She was radiant, and her classmates all said that she was exceedingly lovely. Her mother was not present, having left the heat of the lowlands and danger of fever. Her brother was not present either, but was soon notified that Alice was stricken with fever.

It took four days for Dr. Flagg to reach Alice and then transport her back to the Hermitage. Upon examining her, he found the ring on the ribbon, and, in a rage, ripped it from her neck and threw it into the marsh near the house.

As Alice weakened, she was distraught. When anyone entered her room, she begged them to find her ring. A cousin was so touched by her pleas that he purchased a ring to give her, but she knew it was not her ring and flung it to the floor.

A week after her arrival at the Hermitage, Alice succumbed to the fever and was buried near the home before her mother could return. Later, her body was moved to the All Saints Church cemetery near Pawley’s Island. A simple, flat, white marble slab was placed over the grave, and only the word “Alice” was inscribed in large letters on the stone.

The legend that surrounds the disappointment and death of Alice says that she can be seen at the Hermitage walking the grounds searching for her ring. Others say she is seen on occasion at the cemetery. Local lore says that if you walk backward around her gravestone 13 times at night and leave a ring on the stone she will appear to you. As you observe the stone, you will see a smooth path worn around the stone where the grass is worn away. In addition, there will usually be a collection of rings, coins, flowers and other items lying on the gravestone.

Thoughts: RIGHT I forgot I was doing these!!! Jesus. Ok so I am missing the 20 pull I did on Kokomi's banner earlier in summer, so there will be a little info lost there. BUT a while back I did a 70 pull for Zhongli anD I GOT HIM ON THE VERY LAST ONE. I've missed him on his two previous banners which was such a shame cause he's one of my favourite lore characters SO I WAS DETERMINED TO BRING HOME THIS YEAR. I also managed to get a Diluc cause I lost my first 50/50, which in retrospect is a good thing cause god knows I need a good pyro dps. I'm really happy I got Freminet and Sayu as well, cause both of them were on my 4* wishlist. All in all, a great banner and a great experience. I have a video recording of the whole thing since I streamed it, and I'll slowly start working on editing it once I have extra time on the weekends.

I'm also gonna start doing consistent pull posts with a slightly altered system now that I've fully organised myself with building process and wishlists. Perhaps I'll make a post about those as well. I'm slowly coming back baby!

F2P Yanfei Build Tips

I mentioned in a previous post that I really think pulling on the upcoming Zhongli banner is a great idea for newer players and especially f2p players that have been saving their primos/are nearing pity. This is in large part because the new character Yanfei is looking like a very good character to add to your roster if you lack a main carry or Pyro DPS character.

Pyro is by no means required in this game, but Mihoyo definitely favors it over the other elements. It has access to the two best reactions in the game, melt and vaporise, and can be used with electro for overload to break shields with ease. Dendro when Mihoyo?

Yanfei seems like a f2p player’s dream character, she’s basically a budget Klee. Plus, she’s adorable and has a unique back story akin to Ganyu’s! Unless you just don’t like her design for whatever reason, I highly recommend trying your luck to get her!

Here is a little f2p friendly guide to help you build her should you pull her ! :)

Talents and Ascension

Prioritize Yanfei’s normal attacks when building her talents. Most of her damage will come from Charged Attacks, so her damage will scale better by leveling up her autos first.

Her burst should be second priority since it has a higher damage multiplier. Her skill can be saved for last.

She will require a boss drop from Azhdaha, Bloodjade Branch. Azhdaha is the new weekly boss being introduced in 1.5. Be sure to challenge him once a week!

Other items you will need to ascend her as a character are Agnius Agate, Primordial Jade, Noctilucous Jade, and Treasure Hoarder Insignias!

Weapon

If Yanfei is as much like Klee as she sounds, then the Widsith will likely be her BiS 4 star weapon. Obviously, if you have a 5 star catalyst then use that! If you don’t have either of these, don’t fret! The Mappa Mare is a craftable weapon and is a great choice!

Mappa Mare scales with Elemental Mastery, which is fantastic for a character that relies on reactions to do damage. It’s passive is also useful, granting a 10% elemental damage bonus when an elemental reaction is triggered. This effect can stack twice and scales higher with refinement.

Other great weapons if you have them on hand are the Blackcliff Agate and Solar Pearl. These weapons are great because they provide additional crit dmg and crit rate respectively. Blackcliff can be purchased in the shop with star glitter while the Solar Pearl is a BP exclusive weapon.

Artifacts

*If you are not AR45+* I do not recommend wasting your resin on artifacts. Wait until you’re world level 7 and challenge Lv 90 domains to get guaranteed 5 star artifact drops.*

I’ll also use Klee again for inspiration here. The ideal artifact set for Yanfei would likely be Wanderers Troupe 4pc set. WT is very hard to farm though so Crimson Witch or Lava Walker sets would be good alternatives. In terms of priority I’d say it’s WT > WT/CW > CW > LW but it really just depends on the quality of the artifacts.

For main stats your timepiece should be Atk% unless you have very low Elemental Mastery. If you’re using Mappa Mare and have at least a 2pc Wanderers Troupe set then I’d go with Atk% as a main stat. I’d also use Atk% if you plan on pairing her with Sucrose, since she provides free EM to her teammates. If you are not using Mappa Mare or you don’t have good rolls for EM on your artifacts than shoot for EM as the main stat. So, Atk > EM unless your EM is <100ish.

The cup should 100% be Pyro Dmg Bonus. If you don’t have a single Pyro cup you can run atk% until you do get a Pyro cup.

The circlet should be Crit rate or Crit Dmg, depending which one gets you closer to the ideal 1:2 crit ratio. If your crit rate is <50% I’d say go with Crit Rate over Crit Dmg for more consistency. If you have >50% crit rate then prioritize Crit Dmg.

Sub stats should be prioritized as: Crit rate = Crit Dmg > atk% > elemental mastery > energy recharge > flat Atk and pray you don’t get too many Def or HP rolls.

Team Comp

Yanfei will preform best in a quick swap reaction based team. She will have the best synergy with Hydro, Cryo, Anemo and other Pyro characters. And wouldn’t you know it? Diona will be given away for free in 1.5!

Diona is a fantastic support character, and especially to Yanfei for several reasons:

Cryo application for Melt procs. Diona can apply Cryo with her skill as well as her Burst.

Diona has one of the better shields in the game. As a charged attacker, Yanfei will benefit from the interruption resistance that a shield provides. Diona’s shield scales with HP, so it’s relatively easy to build. It also provides a movement speed increase which is pretty cool and can cleanse other elements off of you to remove unwanted debuffs.

Her burst heals while dealing Cryo damage. This synergizes great with Yanfei. If you happen to have her at max constellation, Diona provides a hefty elemental mastery buff to her teammates inside the AoE of her burst too!

Diona can make use of multiple artifact sets. The new Millieth set looks fantastic for her on paper. She can also utilize the 4pc Maiden Beloved set or pair it with Scholar/Exile. If you lack a Energy Recharge weapon such as Sacrificial Bow or Favonius Warbow, then a simple 2pc Scholar/2pc Exile will work exceptionally well on her. Stack HP% on her timepiece, cup, and circlet to get the most out of her healing and shield.

There are several other characters you could pair with Yanfei and Diona to get a solid team comp. It ultimately comes down to which characters you have in your roster, but for the sake of this build we’ll rely on free characters that everyone has access to.

For the third slot of this team comp, an Anemo character that can utilize Viridescent Venerer artifact set would be great for shredding Pyro resistance for Yanfei. Don’t have Venti, Sucrose, or Jean? Don’t worry, Anemo MC works great as a VV support thanks to their ability to reliably swirl! They also have a fair amount of crowd control and can reach c6 very easily.

For the last slot in this specific team I recommend Bennett if you have him, but if you don’t have him, Xiangling works great! Either way we will be using this slot as a burst support/nuke. I choose these two characters because they are Pyro, which gives the team Pyro resonance, increasing party Atk by 25%! I also chose them because they can both utilize 4pc Noblesse Oblige artifact set. The idea is to use their burst to increase the overall damage of the team. Again, Bennett is perfect for this role but I’ll focus on Xiangling since she’s free to everyone.

Yanfei + Diona + Traveler + Xiangling is a team that will use quick swap play style. Quickswap is a form of play that relies on swapping characters in and out more frequently for higher combined damage, as opposed to Sustained play style where one character is dealing most of the damage. This team can be used in a 4 step rotation:

1.) Start with Xiangling and use her skill or burst to apply Pyro to enemies/activate the NO boost.

2.) Once Pyro is applied, swap to the Traveler and use their skill to swirl Pyro against enemies. This will activate VV 4pc boost, which shreds swirled enemy’s resistance to Pyro by 60%

3.) Swap to Diona and apply Cryo with her skill or Ult.

4.) Finally, Swap Yanfei in and use her charged attacks/burst to proc melts and do big pp damage.

Other 4 ⭐️ characters that can be used with Yanfei include Bennett, Barbara, Chongyun, Sucrose, Xingqiu, Xinyan, Rosaria, and Kaeya. Shoot for Pyro resonance for that sweet Atk buff. Hydro or Cryo for vape and melt procs (Xingqiu is fantastic for this if you have him) and a VV user for resistance shredding (unless you have Zhongli as his shield will shred resistance for you!)

Yanfei can also be used with Electro characters like Fischl for niche shield breaking. Keep in mind that Overload does push enemies back and often requires you to sprint to keep up with them. Charged attackers like Yanfei do not like to sprint too much.

Geo resonance is also a solid choice for her if you have Zhongli, Albedo, or both. If you lack these 5 ⭐️ characters I’d use her in the standard Pyro + Anemo + Hydro/Cryo comp because she doesn’t really have the greatest synergy with other geo characters.

TLDR:

Yanfei is a Pyro DPS character very similar to Klee. She can make use of the 4⭐️ craftable weapon, Mappa Mare; use Wanderer’s Troupe, Crimson Witch or Lavawalker artifact sets with Atk/EM timepiece, Pyro Bonus goblet, and Crit circlet. She ascends with Noctilucous Jade and Primordial Jade, and her talents level up with Bloodjade Branch from new weekly boss Azhdaha. She pairs well with quick swap teams that focus on vaporise and melt elemental reactions!

I hope some people find this helpful! Again, I think Yanfei has really good potential and would make a great addition to your team if you’re looking for another main carry. If you’re new or f2p she’s a great alternative to characters like Diluc and Klee for both overworld and Abyss. Zhongli is also a very good character to have so you really can’t go wrong pulling on this rate up.

In Japanese and Chinese, Zhongli’s banner “Gentry of Hermitage” is called 大隠朝市 - an idiom which can be translated as “The lesser hermit lives amongst the mountains (lit. in the mounds and marshes), the greater hermit lives amongst the public (lit. in the imperial courts and markets).” in Chinese and “a true enlightened hermit does not retreat in the mountains, but secretly mingles with the citizens in the morning market” in Japanese.

the name of zhongli’s banner, and its importance

the title of zhongli’s banner in english is “gentry of hermitage”, but in chinese, it’s called 陵薮市朝 (ling sou shi chao)! this title is taken from an ancient chinese poem called “反招隱詩”, by a poet named 王康琚.

the line that zhongli’s banner’s title comes from is “小隱隱陵藪, 大隱隱朝市.” (notice how the bolded characters make up his banner name, “陵薮市朝”?) the rough translation of this would be something like “the lesser hermit resides in secluded mountains, while the greater hermit resides within imperial courts.” the idea of a “hermit” in ancient china is essentially someone who was very intellectually adept and of great talent, and who didn’t care for things like politics or fame, so many of them fled to live in wilderness so they could pursue their own free thinking and attainment of more knowledge.

much of the rest of this is my own interpretation, but i think it’s really neat that they chose to reference this poem in zhongli’s banner because, in a certain way, zhongli does fit that description of a “hermit”! he’s well-learned, benevolent, isn’t obsessed with worldly matters, etc etc. and as for the line “the lesser hermit resides in secluded mountains, while the greater hermit resides within imperial courts”, a way of analyzing it could be that “greater” hermits are greater because they stay in a place with lots of people (courts are filled with officials, scholars, etc) and are exposed to many more different ways of thinking. in contrast, the “lesser” hermit runs to live in solitude to cultivate only their own line of thought.

the fact that zhongli’s banner’s title takes words from both the line with the “lesser” hermit and the line with the “greater” hermit could be a way of showing how willing he is as a character to evolve with the times, and how he himself has changed over the course of the liyue storyline. he was open to the idea that the era of the adepti was over and chose to step down from godhood in response to it, and now lives in liyue harbor as an ordinary citizen — maybe a little like going from “secluded mountains” to “imperial courts”! in any case, zhongli is shown to be very open-minded (he supports keqing’s skepticism, and despite valuing traditions and customs so much himself, is willing to support non-traditional ideas too as seen in the fact that he tried to sponsor xinyan), and this could make him the “greater hermit” who lives in the imperial courts and listens to others’ ideas.

there’s also a way of interpreting the line as in that if you are a true hermit who genuinely does not value politics or fame in your heart, then it means that you’ll never yearn for those things no matter where you go. so, in a sense, you may as well stay in a imperial court instead of living in the mountains. historically in ancient china, imperial courts also had the tendency to be a dirty mess of infighting among royal relatives and officials trying to seize power, so a hermit who could live in that kind of atmosphere day to day and yet not have their own values or morals corrupted by it is the “greater” hermit. and as we can see in the game, zhongli is very firm in his own beliefs, especially in contracts!
