Kristin and I walked #tokaiforest today which always inspires me with its dark shadows and vivid colors, so I painted an assemblage combining elements of the forest area and focusing on the values more than just color. I put a 30 minute time limit on the painting to keep myself loose and moving and not getting bogged down in detail. Laundry day and a scheduled road bike ride left little time for a painting expedition, so I set up in the back yard again and painted a scene from yesterday’s hike from memory. It was a good exercise that I should practice more often. This painting evolved from some small #pleinair studies along the #alphentrail, re-created on a slightly larger canvas and then finally to the larger version. I intended #pleinairpainting to simply be a means of growth in an area I had little experience. I did not foresee its influence on my emerging landscape works as a whole. Out with the #pochadebox at the SARDA meadow (South Africa Riding for the Disabled) and up the hill in #belombremeadow creating more quick #pleinairpostcards from random cardstock and containers that allow me the freedom to have some fun with the paint and not worry about the final product...although I do end up liking the thick, glossy paint (lots of safflower oil) and messy nature of these. I have little skill in plein air painting. So why do it? I have more skill with portraits and figures,so why even concern myself with painting outdoors with limited resources and a cramped work area (my palette is around 12x18cm or 5x7 inches). Personally I enjoy challenges like these, despite what I considered to be mediocre results. The unexpected benefits, however, are already creeping in to my overall painting process. I have developed a different feel for paint, enjoying the somewhat messy and uncontrolled application outdoors working out of my pochade box. Plein air painting has reinforced the good habit of working quickly to establish a design on block out major shapes. It also encourages me to create multiple paintings or iterations in a short time while experimenting with color combinations I may otherwise not have considered. Personal growth motivates me to explore even more. Re-familiarized myself with water soluable oils- a set I purchased long ago specifically for #pleinair #pochadebox painting. They are super thick compared to the oil paints I normally use, but thin well with Gamblin gel medium. They get a bit too thin with water. They become tacky after about 4 hours. I’m still struggling with color mixes (phthalo green is the main green in the mix) but slowly learning to adapt and work with what I’ve got.
