Daily Replays #1, 3/22/2023, GGST

Since this is the first one of these I'm posting, a short explanation is in order. I'm planning to post a replay every day (or at least most days) to this blog, along with match analysis. This is both because I think it will help people understand the games and how to analyze them better and because I think it'll improve my gameplay.

This match was against a friend of mine from Giocord, Hex. They're a damn good Gio/Testament player, and while I win this game, I feel obligated to mention that the final score just versus their testament was something like 5 to 17. Analysis under the cut!

ROUND 1: Doesn't start off great - I try to force a few interactions against Testament which doesn't work well in this matchup, as Chipp can almost never beat Testament's buttons outright. I burst early which wasn't a conscious tactical decision on my part but was probably good since it means I'll have burst later in the game. My movement's also a bit too pre-emptive early on, so I get caught by crow. After that first bit I escape the corner with some solid movement after a fuzzy, and then get my big chance when I backdash the throw from Hex (on read, by which I mean I was just trying to make space rather than calling out throw specifically. If they had gone for a button, I'd probably have lost.) Rest of the round is pretty standard - I just keep the momentum I got there, mostly winning interactions by being first. Most noteworthy points are me getting hit by a burst I tried to bait because Hex smartly delayed it, me instant-blocking the first hit of Testament H Fireball, which nets me a juicy punish, and the super wallbreak which gave Hex a lot of burst, but was necessary to win the round.

ROUND 2: This one starts with some smart use of 6P on both sides. I'm generally reluctant to use Chipp's 6P, as it's extremely slow to recover, but it's a good choice for contesting air options and covers a solid amount of space done out of a dash. I also need to be more careful of Testament's 6P when they're on defense. My movement this round is a lot cleaner - I wait for the crow rather than jumping fireball, allowing me to get in without getting cursed and get a nice wallbreak. I mess up my safejump and don't improvise well, which ultimately leads to my loss as I'm counterhit, burst, then get put on defense and ultimately deleted with anti-air c.S.

ROUND 3: Next round I start out playing a bit too passively. It's not bad to be cautious in this matchup, but just blocking crow rather than jumping it puts me in a bad situation. I think incomprehensibly go in as soon as I have curse on me and eat a CH 2D for my trouble (a good callout from Hex.) The round turns in my favor when Hex drops the combo and I challenge with a button that probably shouldn't have reached, but does. I get CH 2H, Hex bursts correctly but gets baited because I was not prepared to convert from the CH 2H. The rest of the round I drop several setups and combos, almost losing the round for it. I also fail to contest f.S effectively like 3 times in a row, but win because I had established a lead already and finally manage to 6P a f.S and convert to Rekka Rekka Super for the win.

And that's that! The sets today were super fun, and a good confidence booster even though I didn't actually do that well numberswise. Don't expect my analysis to be this in-depth every time, by the by - I'll write as much as I feel like, which may not always be this much.
