Gig milestones
April 28th, 2009
I’ve wanted to work this out for my own amusement for a while. It might be worth publishing. My Mum and Dad will definitely find it interesting at least.
(This, obviously, doesn’t include instores, acoustic things and radio sessions, because mostly they suck)
First off, here is a photograph of us before (I think) we had ever even played a gig (it’s scary how young we look):
Tumblr media
NB. I’m wearing a tie because I had just come from some awards thing. Not because I wanted to be in the Strokes.

⸻     it  is  MARIA ELENA GONZALEZ  .  the  thirty-two  year  old  barista & street performer has  been  spotted  wandering  down  portobello  road  markets  just  last  sunday  ,  do  you  know  them  ?  would  you  say  she  is  more  impatient  or  more  strong-willed  ?  anyway  ,  they  remind  me  of  growing up before one is supposed to , the soft melody of an acoustic guitar , being not only an older sister but a mother , not enough moments of solitude  ,  maybe  you'll  catch  them  around  yeah ?     ⸻     [          ◟  MELISSA BARRERA. ◝           ]
trigger warnings for ⸻ parental abuse, prison, cheating, parental death.
Tumblr media
Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, Maria Elena is the oldest of a total of five children.
From a very young age, she felt as though she was constantly supporting the weight of the world. Her mother, Esmeralda Gonzalez had picked one of the worst possible men to father her children, and while she worked double shifts to support them the very best she could, from a very young age Maria had to work right alongside her mother to feed her siblings.
She holds no ill-feeling towards them, however, it's almost like she had occupied a place she knew she belonged, which made some heaviness to be lifted from her mother's shoulders.
Her mother is quite possibly the one person she would ever look up to. She remembers fondly to see the woman swaying and singing while cooking for them the meal of the day. Despite it all, Esmeralda always managed to put on a smile for her children.
Her father, Humberto, however, was an entirely different person, in a way she didn't know how they were even together. He was an angry and drunk man, who occasionally worked as a mechanic and put some money inside. He was always trying for ways to get easy money and it would often lead him to trouble.
He was also incredibly angry towards Esmeralda and their children. He wasn't shy about cheating on her and ever so often, Maria put herself in the line of the strike so he wouldn't hit her mother. Esmeralda did her best to hold their marriage from crumbling, but at some point, Maria was just begging her mother to leave her father.
It happened when he was arrested trying to cross the border with drugs for easy money. He was caught red handed and neither women blinked when they received the news. Maria told her mother that this was it- the outing they needed. She was eighteen at the time, and tired of being there, Guadalajara didn't even feel like home anymore.
Putting their two cents together and getting some more gigs, Esmeralda boarded all her children in a flight straight to London where her older sister lived. For Maria Elena, that not only meant freedom, but being finally able to think for herself.
Guadalupe received her family in a warm welcome, though Maria could hear when she would apprehend Esmeralda for staying with Humberto for so long.
Maria on the other hand, didn't know what to make of her newfound freedom. Most days she was damn scared her father would find them, but on others, she was desperately trying to figure out her next step.
Being a part of the musical industry was just a dream, and it would pertain to being a dream as life had made her extremely pragmatic and not at all romantic like her mother.
Still in the mindset of helping her mother and not wanting to be a weight for her family for much longer, she decided to skip college altogether and started working at a hotel, where she met David.
Now that was a whirlwind she was unsure she was really ready for. David's world was hardly one she belonged, but she got swept in the fantasy anyway. She was a housekeeper at the time, and he was married, they were entangled in one another all the same.
While she lived this dream, she also lived one of the worst times of her life, her mother falling ill and quickly succumbing to lung cancer, when she was nearing her time to say goodbye, David asked her to leave London with him, something she couldn't abide.
She never met him halfway through, nowadays she is unsure he even left his wife, but she got out of her job at the hotel and started working as a barista.
Nowadays, she added the street performer to her curriculum. She just sings for a couple of bucks, because all her siblings are still very much committed to raising their youngest who is 10 years old at the time.
They don't live with their aunt anymore, who also passed away shortly after their mother did, leaving Maria to occupy the head of the household role.
PERSONALITY.
Maria is, and has always been incredibly self-sufficient, if there is something she deeply hates is when people want to take care of things she is plenty incredible at taking care of herself.
She is a carer, but that trait in particular extends only to her siblings and close friends (she tries not to have a lot of those). In fact, she judges herself to be rather selfish when times ask for it, hardly thinking of others before herself, more in a sense that if it's asked for, she will be first in line.
She's not afraid to get down and dirty. She's strong-willed and opinionated, which often lands her on the wrong side of people, but first and foremost, she is constantly thinking about her family and how her actions may affect them.
Maria is an incredibly creative soul, to create being a place where she feels deeply comfortable in, especially when she is able to constantly do it-- which is not the case right now.
HEADCANONS.
Cannot count how many jobs Maria actually had since arriving in the city. She has been a temp for a while, but the longest she's been in a job has been the one she currently has as a barista.
Music is something she absolutely loves, she'd be a singer/songwriter if she could, but she is way too pragmatic to dream about being one. She prefers to have her two feet on the ground rather than going around calling herself an artist. She knows how to play most instruments, save from a few classical ones she didn't care about, but she's self-taught to excellence in acoustic guitar, eletric guitar, base, ukulele, drums, and piano, though the first will always be her favorite.
Her mother's acoustic guitar is the one she still plays, it's a vintage Hummingbird with blue flowery designs, she doesn't know what it would ever feel like if something happened to it.
Aside from street performing she absolutely loves to sing on open mic nights.

It’s finally here! My third and final installment of playlists for fans of We Are Lady Parts, who are interested in hearing from women and people of color in the punk scene. My first two playlists focused on the 70s-80s and the 90s-2000s, while this playlist is intended to introduce people to some contemporary artists. (As always, this list is not definitive. Please feel free to reblog and recommend your own faves!)
Tracklist and artist information under the cut
While the nature of these playlists necessitates that I only include artists available on spotify, most of them have music available to download on bandcamp! I highly encourage you to directly purchase any music that you enjoy. The relative ease with which bands can produce and distribute music over the internet today does not mean that bands have seen a similar increase in income from that music, and it is impossible for smaller artists to support themselves through streaming alone. As we’ve discussed, many of these more marginalized artists face enormous barriers to getting their music made and heard. Please support artists that you would like to see more from!
I Was a Teenage Anarchist - Against Me! Laura Jane Grace, singer, songwriter, and guitarist, founded Against Me! in 1997, but I’ve waited to talk about them until this playlist because they are still actively putting out albums. Grace came out as a transgender woman in 2012, and that experience has been a prominent theme in her music.
Henry Don’t Got Love - Le Butcherettes A Mexican punk band formed in 2007 by Teri Gender Bender. They were initially based in Guadalajara, but moved to LA after a falling out in 2009. Their most recent release was in 2019.
Let Go of the Past - The Tuts A multi-racial, all-female trio based in London, The Tuts formed as teenagers while all the members were still in school. After building a following online and through live gigs, they crowd-sourced the funding to produce their first album, Update Your Brain, which this song is the lead single from. They are politically active and use their music to speak out against the conservative British government.
Bassline Bitch - Nova Twins A duo of black English women who use bass and guitar distortion pedals to create a unique sound. The success of their EPs was followed by the release of their first album, Who Are the Girls? in 2020. (If you live in the UK, they are currently touring!)
Okay - Skinny Girl Diet Three cousins who began playing together as teenagers in the early 2010s, Skinny Girl Diet’s first gig was opening for the Slits. (Which gives me the chance to make a digression about how many of today’s artists were supported by and given exposure by groups we’ve already discussed! I’m not going to point out every group that’s ever collaborated with each other, because there’s a ton on this list alone, but it’s really wonderful to see the connections within the punk community.) This song is from their debut album, Heavy Flow.
Targets of Men Targets of Men - G.L.O.S.S. Their name stands for Girls Living Outside Society’s Shit. The band is comprised of queer and transgender women, who are outspoken activists and who push back against the straight, white, and male domination of the hardcore punk scene.
We Got Time - The Kominas Formed by two Pakistani-Americans (although the band lineup has gone through many iterations), The Kominas are part of the emerging punk subculture of Taqwacore, or muslim punk rock. They draw from a wide range of musical influences, from covers of classic Bollywood songs to reggae. Their name can be translated as “scoundrels.”
Turn it Up - Alice Bag I finally get to talk about Alice Bag!! A chicana punk legend, she was the lead singer for Bags beginning in 1977. While they were one of the most influential groups in the West Coast early punk scene, they only put out one single (Survive, which is not on spotify). Alice Bag was continuously active as a live performer over the decades, playing with many different groups (including Castration Squad and Cholita), but it took until 2016 for her to release an album. She’s put out an album every two years since.
Fall Asleep - Big Joanie A trio of black women based in London, Big Joanie is named after their lead singer’s mother. Like so many of these other groups, the members met and were moved to form after being frustrated by the lack of intersectionality in the punk scene. Along with their great original tracks, they’ve done some fun covers including Cranes in the Sky and No Scrubs!
Hive - Pleasure Venom An experimental garage-punk band based in Austin Texas and headed by Audrey Campbell, a black woman. This song is from their 2018 self-titled EP, but they are set to release a full album this year.
Buckshot - 1865 Founded by musician/filmmaker Sacha Jenkins, 1865′s lead singer is Honeychild Coleman, one of the establishing members of the Sista Grrl Riot movement that we discussed on the 90s playlist! Their name is a reference to the year the Confederacy surrendered, the Thirteenth Amendment was ratified, and slavery was legally abolished in the United States.
It’s All Right - Secondlady Founded by Alyse, a black woman and DJ who moved to Osaka, Japan, Secondlady began as a way to make friends with similar interests. In the ten years since then the four person, all female band has been consistently performing live. This song is their first single, released in 2019.
Sick of it All - Magnolia Park A multi-racial, five-piece, pop-punk band from Orlando, Florida. I’ve neglected pop punk on these playlists so far, but Magnolia Park and several other bands coming up on this list are great examples of the recent resurgence of pop punk! (They are also touring in August, if anyone wants to buy tickets!)
Barbie Girl - Bad Skin I couldn’t make one of these playlists without a great cover on it, and this is a really fun one! Bad Skin is a multi-racial all-female group from Montreal, Canada. (Their latest music video dropped while I was writing this bio!)
Lavender - Initiate A hardcore (but surprisingly melodic) punk group from California. This song is off their second EP. It is inspired by Alice Walker’s In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens, which the vocalist, Crystal, read in class.
Street Pulse Beat - Special Interest A four-piece punk band from New Orleans, Louisiana, with lyrics written and sung by Alli Logout. Special Interest are all queer and all people of color. Their name is a reference to the “special interest” section of video stores, where cult classics (and porn) could be found.
Garden - Meet Me @ the Altar An American pop-punk band that formed in 2015, and initially collaborated exclusively online, since all three members lived in different states. They’ve released one full album and multiple EPs. (They are also currently touring!)
Blink 9-11 - The Muslims Formed in the aftermath of the 2016 American presidential election, The Muslims use their music to speak out against American conservative politics and racism. This song, a biting parody of Blink-182′s ‘What’s My Age Again?’, is off of their 2020 album, Gentrified Chicken. (I don’t think they’re touring right now, but they’re putting one together and should be releasing dates soon!)
Rainwalk - Pinkshift A pop-punk group from Baltimore, Pinkshift gained unexpected attention when their single I’m Gonna Tell My Therapist On You went moderately viral. Rainwalk is a song off that same album. (Fun fact: they found their bassist on tinder!)
Racist, Sexist Boy - The Linda Lindas The youngest group on this list, ranging in age from 10 to 16, the Linda Lindas began getting a lot of attention for their high-energy covers of classic punk songs. They got exposure opening for legends like Alice Bag and Bikini Kill, and appeared in movies like Moxie. Since, they have begun writing their own material including this song, inspired by a racist comment from a classmate.
Nakhu Ses’Fika - Shameless Band A group from Soweto, South Africa, who combine a wide range of musical styles to create a versitile african rock sound that they refer to as Nkabi Rock/I Rock Yase Kasi (isizulu for Assassin Rock/Rock from the township).
This playlist got long, but that’s because there’s such a wealth of artists making great punk music today! I hope people found someone that they enjoy, and feel free to comment with artists I’ve left off. If you’re coming across these playlists without having watched the show that inspired me to make them, I hope you go check out We Are Lady Parts!

MIGUEL Y MIN | Pt 4 - The approach
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Largely for shits and gigs since there’s not too much to analyze here.
Mostly, I just thought there were interesting synchronicities namely, the way that both Benjamín and Güero have to literally interrupt a conversation and ask for an audience bc the guests of honor are just *in Aussie accent* lyke souuu buzy
However irritated Miguel may seem when Mín interrupts his and Matta’s conversation, he at least does Mín the courtesy of talking to him then and there instead of making him wait or shutting him down.
It’s unclear entirely why he humors Mín in this way but I suspect it’s largely motivated by a sense of familial obligation to his nephew rather than a professional obligation to help a subordinate.
Mín for his part, feels no such obligation to honor Güero in the same way and he does fully shut that shit down, quick, which just illustrates the depth of the decay in their relationship after Miguel’s arrest and the dissolution of the Guadalajara cartel.
The sense of mutually assured destruction manufactured by Miguel in La Federación is entirely absent in S3 and that in turn, allows these super deep-seated, underlying tensions between the 2 plazas to boil over in the S3’s Los Juniors.

Getting DMs about Sam's friend, Matt Neal, being with Sam in Mexico, based on this pic. Back of Sam and what could be back of Matt.
Tumblr media
And Matt posted this on his IG story yesterday. And I checked, and it WAS raining in Guadalajara, Mexico, where Sam was.
Tumblr media
Matt is also in the whisky business
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Soooo, it wouldn't be far fetched that maybe now they're doing a Tequila venture together. But that's just speculation.
For those who don't know, Matt and Sam, along with Matt's brother, Luke Neal, are all good friends from their days living in London bartending, while trying to get acting gigs.
Debunking Extreme Shipper and Hater falsehoods: NO, Sam isn't in Mexico with Cait and Matt with his girlfriend. Matt's girlfriend, Sarah, may have gone along with him, but FOR SURE, Cait isn't there because, repeat after me, CAIT IS MARRIED TO TONY MCGILL, coming up on two years in August.
AND, neither Matt nor his brother, Luke are or have EVER been Sam's "boyfriend," since all 3 men are straight and there is documented PROOF of them dating WOMEN.
Anyhoo, it's not confirmed that's Matt, but it seems likely. Glad Sam has such strong and long lasting friendships, says a lot about a person when they can keep their pre-fame friends.
