Exactly one year ago today we celebrated me coming into a new decade with a tea party filled with my favorite women. As of today, je suis trente et un ans ,(I'm 31 years old! and obviously in the process of learning french...finally!) We've celebrated with a trip to the mountains, ferrero rocher cupcakes, dinner with the parents at the most elegant restaurant, and my favorite meal tonight....lasagna (a gluten free edition). All this to say, I believe in celebrating life whenever you have the chance, which is why I love birthdays so much. And am a little sad to see the closing of yet another Katiepalooza! Hello, I live in a place where beauty standards are incredibly high and the field is overwhelmingly competitive. At least that is my interpretation of the feminine side of LDS culture here in Salt Lake City where people hold a favorable economic status. Of course not everyone is like this but - The housewives here are (generally speaking) very materialistic with their oversized houses, Target farmhouse decor, Gigipip fedoras, and with their waist-length blonde hair and perfectly designed wardrobes. Walk down the streets of Park City and you’ll spot plenty of girls who resemble Nordic models. And if you go into the lovely canyons, girls are posing on the sides of the road, trying to take the best selfie or modeling while a friend points a camera their way. Do you know Amberfillerup on IG, now imagine that everywhere you look. Everyone trying to be another Amber. You constantly measure yourself up against the other woman and it can be exhausting to (attempt to) live up to their high standards. I’ve never known a crowd of women who engage in Botox and non-surgical cosmetics as much as the culture here, especially from such a young age of mid twenties. It’s one of the biggest reasons why I’m taking my daughters out of this place in the long run.

With that picture laid out, I understand your desire to be more beautiful because it’s something I’ve fought with innately too a lot this year because of this unique cultural climate. Where beauty becomes a key feature to identity, a skin too hard to shed loose. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be your best self, to be your healthiest inside and out, and to feel confident about the way you look. But let’s heal the girl within and teach ourselves that we don’t have to compete and compare. Let’s learn together how to refocus our minds so we’re not wondering each day, “Am I the prettiest, no? Ok who is?” I resent the way beauty takes up space in my mind. I would much rather be focused on being a great theoretical physicist and putting all my efforts into that impossible endeavor. I want my actions or grandiose plights to take up space in my mind. I think about how Steve Jobs or Carl Sagan never gave two shits about whether or not they were pretty. Who would you want to be more like with your own greatest passions in life and dream career? Try to focus on their successes. Chase after those qualities the best you can. Delete toxic social media followings that make you feel bad. Let’s stop wondering if we’re beautiful enough.
