I get messages often from cadets who have read my blogs or seen posts on Instagram asking advice for their first ship, and I can tell them for days about learning rules, studying, blah blah blah... But the most important thing is be kind to everyone you meet. Respect everyone you meet. Learn from everyone you meet, doesn't matter if they're Captain or Cleaner, Sailor, Mechanic, anybody they can teach you something, whether it's useful to your line of work, or just to look at something through different outlook. Everyone is at sea for a reason, whether it is because they want to be, or they need to be, but no matter the reason they are human beings and deserve to be treated the same way you expect to be treated. My way of thinking is that you're not so likely to be remembered as someone who could check firedoors, or could manoeuvre a ship well, but you will be remembered for being kind, for being polite, for learning someone's name and saying hello, for just smiling as you pass, sometimes it's the little things that you just do without thinking that makes someone's day a little bit brighter, and when you are so far from your home and family a kind smile is all you need to feel better. I love hearing from people just starting their careers, it's great to hear that words I've written have inspired or helped people. We all need to remember we were all just starting out once upon a time and that once upon a time was daunting, and it is so reassuring to talk to someone. "-but I was too young and too short and there were no female captains, but my dad said be patient he said just see what happens" Beverley Bass' words (or at least in CFA) may have been about planes in the late 1950s, but the line is still one that I relate too a lot. I decided I wanted to navigate the seas at 10 years old, and at that point I wasn't even sure girls could be merchant officers, but I still worked towards that goal. For the majority of those years, I felt there was no role model, no one I could 'I want to be like them when I grow up,' until few years ago I came across the insta of a certain Captain, who fast became a bit of a professional idol to me. Yesterday that same Captain let me do the maneuver from the berth during our departure from Miami. On international Woman's day 2018 I was high fived by @whitehorsemaritime during my first exam prep session and wished happy Woman's day. International Woman's Day 2019 I have the absolute privilege to work with some incredible women. (edit because I was originally told I was going to the Equinox not Silhouette and clicked the wrong photo saved in my downloads) Well my flight details and everything have come through so I guess it's official now! On Thursday I will flying out to Miami to join the Celebrity Silhouette as a third officer, my first time back at sea since getting my Officer of the Watch ticket. As many of you know I wanted to be a Merchant navigator since I was in primary, and the past few years though my cadetship I've been following @captainkatemccue who is a true inspiration to me, so as you all can probably tell this is like a dream come true! I know I've already made a International Woman's Day post, but that was celebrating our ladies of the present! This one is to celebrate the ladies of the future!
