Laxmi Puja is an important ritual performed on the third day of Diwali. It falls on Amavasya, also known as the new moon day, which is considered auspicious. On this night, Maa Laxmi descends on earth to visit homes and bless the people with prosperity and fortune.
Hindus prepare for her arrival by cleaning their homes and lighting lamps. The lamps are lit in rows, leading up to the entrance and also along the parapet. The entrances are decorated with intricate rangolis to welcome her. According to Hindu mythology, Maa Laxmi prefers cleanliness and would visit the cleanest home first.
Women are regarded as Maa Laxmi's embodiment and are responsible for the preparations. They use incense sticks to purify the puja space. Turmeric (Haldi) and vermilion (sindoor) are offered to Maa Laxmi once the puja commences. They signify protection and have cleansing properties. After the puja, families take the celebrations outside their homes and burst firecrackers. Doing so is often believed to ward off evil spirits from homes.
Celebrating new beginnings is another distinctive part of Laxmi puja. People consider starting something new and ending something on this day, whether it be opening a new account, making a new investment, or getting something new.
