Gohar World “When people say that entertaining should be effortless, I don’t agree. I think that you should put an effort into entertaining and that you should consider all elements. Not only the food, but also the decor of the room, the lighting, the music. There’s nothing more beautiful than putting in an effort to show your friends and family that you love them.’ - Laila Gohar, ‘Gohar World’. Before the pandemic, the chef and artist Laila Gohar would throw a dinner party at her Manhattan apartment at least once a week - inviting artists, designers, writers, actors and others to gather at her table over food and drink. After social distancing became the norm, and dinner parties a thing of the past, Gohar’s own work and life shifted. Suddenly, the time seemed right to revisit an idea she and her younger sister Nadia, also an artist, had been contemplating for years: How do you translate the experience of dining together - of treating everyday rituals with reverence - into objects that will last beyond one evening? Their answer is ‘Gohar World’ a playful collection of 40 handmade table accessories. There are lacy bonnets for vegetables, glass knife and fork rests shaped like pieces of hard candy and a candelabra made to hold eggs rather than candles. The duo had originally envisaged their project as a way to revive specific arts-and-crafts traditions, sourcing lacemakers, glass blowers and chandlers from Vienna to Milan to their native Cairo. Nadia, who also lives in New York City, oversaw much of the production and the sisters’ maternal grandmother, Nabila, a former dressmaker, contributed many of the black bows that serve as napkin rings and decorate baguette bags. Eventually, the line will expand to include a brick-and-mortar location in New York. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #design #words #pictures #love #egypt #lacemakers #glassblowers #chandlers #surrealistfoodinstallations #tongueincheekobjects #perfectlyimperfecttablescapes #tableaccessories #artsandcrafts #traditionalcraft #stainbaguetebag #ribbonqueennabila #nadiagohar #familybusiness #lailagohar #goharworld https://www.instagram.com/p/CgTwB2hsA29/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Gohar World “My house has an open-door policy. I always think, ‘If you can have 10 people, you can always make it 12.’” - Laila Gohar, ‘Gohar World’. Fans of Laila Gohar’s work will be familiar with her surrealist food installations and perfectly imperfect tablescapes, which evoke both the surreal mood of Marcel Duchamp and handcrafted intricacy of Louise Bourgeois - think metres-long lemon tarts, pearl-draped fruit and classical sculptures carved out of butter. ‘Gohar World’ captures the same spirit, while bringing people together at the table with impeccable style. Its current collection of 40 tongue-in-cheek objects includes a wrought iron egg chandelier, candy-shaped cutlery rests, and an ultra-lightweight balloon tumbler with a painted eye at its base. At the core of the brand’s ethos is traditional craft and an intricate, maximalist sensibility, which separates it from the sleek, minimalist pieces crowding the homeware market. While working, Laila noticed that artisanal techniques like lacework, needlework and glass-blowing were disappearing from the space, and took matters into her own hands; with Nadia, she sought out craftspeople across Italy, Spain, Austria and their homeland of Egypt. Many of these were family businesses. Take 'Laboratorio Paravicini' a Milan-based atelier run by a mother and her three daughters, responsible for making ‘Gohar World’s’ ceramic dinner plates painted with trompe-l'œil beans. Gohar World itself is, after all, a family affair. Besides Laila and Nadia, the brand is also the work of their grandmother and “ribbon queen” Nabila, who, amongst other things, makes the hand-stitched bows adorning the sleek satin bag made specifically to house a single baguette. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #design #words #pictures #love #egypt #lacemakers #glassblowers #chandlers #surrealistfoodinstallations #tongueincheekobjects #perfectlyimperfecttablescapes #tableaccessories #artsandcrafts #traditionalcraft #stainbaguetebag #ribbonqueennabila #nadiagohar #familybusiness #lailagohar #goharworld https://www.instagram.com/p/CgTv8CTsKka/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
