listen man everyone’s talking about the ship gonchario and i get it. goncharov and mario were cute and i love the representation but why does NOBODY talk about ice pick joe and katya??? dude when katya was beating up those goons with the crowbar and joe saw?? the TENSION?? not to mention the movie was teasing at goncharov x andrey the ENTIRE FILM, the FISHING SCENE?? and then they had the nerve to make gonchario CANON and treat katya like an PLOT OBJECT??? sorry for the rant guys this is just an issue that really got on my nerves UGH there was so much potential.

Everyone’s talking about Goncharov and Andrey this, Goncharov and Andrey that...but what about Goncharov and Mario? The tragic, unrequited love, the loyalty bordering on obsession...
Mario chooses, again and again, to stay by Goncharov’s side, no matter who leaves. I think the tragedy reaches it’s peak during the office scene. Al Pacino’s acting was incredible during that scene. You see the love and commitment and admiration that Mario has for Goncharov so quickly turned into crushing disappointment and hurt. Goncharov has fallen so far into his pit of paranoia and selfishness that he suspects his right-hand man, his closest friend, of betraying him.  When he asks “Is it true, Mario?” You SEE the pain of the question written on Mario’s face. How could he ask such a question? Does Goncharov not understand the love Mario has for him? Mario would never betray him. But Goncharov does not understand that. And that is the tragedy of their relationship.

So crazy to think about Mario being such a womanizer one night stand type asshole struggle with sharing somethin intimate with someone else... Anyway this is an exerpt from my ongoing fic "Cathedral Lights"

Why they don't say his name: Goncharov's influences
Fun fact I learned about Goncharov after reading the Matteo WHJ0715 japanese interview: Goncharov was influenced by the play and movie O Beijo no Asfalto ('The Asphalt Kiss') by brazilian author Nelson Rodrigues!
I watched the movie and you can see some of the influences in the filmography, in particular the scene where a dejected mario holds goncharov and the gonchrey betrayal/death/kiss scene:

What I want to point out the most though, is that Andrey's iconic line from the ending is actually a direct parallel to the play! Not only that, the whole sequence is very much influenced by Rodrigues' play.
For comparison, here's the scene from Aslphalt's script:

And here's the scene from Goncharov's:
Tumblr media
it should be noted that In the play, Aprígio's feelings are romantic love and jealousy, and in the original language he says "first" name, so this is a confirmation of Andrey's feelings for Goncharov and the reason why none of them actually call goncharov by his first name! (meanwhile Katya, Sofia, Andrey, Mario and even Joe are all almost exclusively referred to by their first names). While in Goncharov we can't actually hear Gon's first name and we are left to ponder if Andrey's feelings are real for a while, or if perhaps Goncharov didn't die, but the fact that Robert De Niro is credited as a single first name when the credits roll is enough to tell us that Andrey did, in fact, love Goncharov till he died.
But also, it's interesting that the scene where Arandir kisses a man before his death out of kindness is paralleled by gonchario earlier, and especially that Goncharov is paralleled to the dead man asking to be kissed in Mario's arms and not the other way around. Makes you wonder even more about them, but it could also just be a simple homage.
I just thought this was a neat little connection that possibly explains a lot. It's just a theory though, but I think it makes sense when you compare the two scripts.
Anyway, Andrey did say his name </3
