Read Scripture Week 18

This week, we are exploring most of the second half of Isaiah, chs. 44-66. We drop into the middle of a trial God is holding to demonstrate that the Israelite’s were not transformed by the exile, and that their hearts remain hard as ever (see ch. 48).

The next section of Isaiah (chs. 49-55), is crucially important for understanding Jesus and how the apostles talked about him as the suffering messianic King. In Isaiah 49-55, we see a king who is a faithful representative of Israel and will become a blessing to all the nations by establishing God’s kingdom over all the earth. However, this servant would accomplish all this by dying as an atoning sacrifice for the sins of his people.

After his death and exaltation, God forces his people to make a choice: those who are humble can repent and receive God’s kingdom from the suffering servant, or they can harden their hearts and refuse to participate. Isaiah 56-66 paints a portrait of what the new creation of God’s kingdom is like, and challenge God’s people to hope and pray for that day.

#2 Discrepancy - Zooming in on Matthew

Yesterday we started a search on the word gospel.  We saw 23 occurrences (excluding Paul’s epistles and Acts) with the audience being Jews all but one time. (Revelation was the exception since there will be Jews and Gentiles living during the Tribulation period.)  Most of the time Jesus was speaking.  5 of 16 times Jesus used the term Gospel of the Kingdom.  Mark introduced his gospel as the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Peter called it the Gospel of God once in his epistles and John declared it to be the everlasting gospel.

Today we look at Matthew’s Gospel.  Take a closer look at the entire context of each verse.

The context of Matthew 4:17-25 is where Jesus starts his ministry.  “From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”  The next sequence of events is where we find Jesus hand-picking 4 of his disciples.  And then “he went about in Galilee teaching in their synagogues, and healing people” vs. 23.

The context of Matthew 9:29-35 is Jesus’ power to heal and the added qualifier of this gospel of having faith in the fact that Jesus has power to heal people.

The context of Matthew 11:1-6 is where John the Baptist, having some doubts about who Jesus was, sent a couple of his followers to ask Jesus if he was in fact, the Christ.  The Lord sent a message back with the obvious evidence that he was fulfilling all prophecies, proving he was the Christ.

The context of Matthew 24:1-14 is all about Jesus’ second coming, which is prophecy yet to be fulfilled. In verse 13 an important qualifier of this gospel is endurance!

The context of Matt 26:6-13 is the account of the woman with the jar of oil for anointing Jesus.  Jesus says whenever this gospel is preached, people will hear of her actions.  

What can we understand about the gospel that is being taught in Matthew?  

Preached in synagogues throughout Israel 

Jewish people are the one’s receiving this message.  

Jesus is proclaiming himself as the Christ

Jesus has power to healing

Endurance to the end through tribulation

Believing Jesus is their Messiah.

Tomorrow we’ll look at Mark’s account and see what we can find.

So I grew up Orthodox Christian, and i just came across your blog. I'm currently pagan but what does neo-orthodox mean? Are there more Orthodox people out there that aren't homophobic assholes like in my old church?

hey! so neo-orthodoxy is a theological movement among Protestantism that is defined by its opposition to theological liberalism, arising to prominence in the mid-20th century. It has little to do with the Orthodox Churches. 

However, there are some Orthodox people I know who aren’t homophobic assholes! Check out @gospelofthekingdom and he can maybe recommend more. :)
